3 BG Trauma Hospital Hamburg Germany Information Brochure for Patients & Medical Doctors The Trauma Hospital Hamburg belongs to the German employers liability insurance association. Established in 1959 with a specialised centre for spinal cord injuries, the hospital has been serving the needs of both state, national and international patients for the past 54 years. The Trauma Hospital Hamburg is primarily a German employers liability insurance association hospital but also admits other trauma patients who are insured under the conventional medical insurance scheme. For international patients we are in a position to organise medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) from anywhere in the world. Our hospital s surgical unit and staff are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to patients, education of students and staff, and the advancement of scientific knowledge. We are a major research clinic of the University of Hamburg and one of Germany s first-class trauma centres. We handle acute injuries, reconstructive orthopaedic/ trauma surgery, degenerative malfunctions, and patients with complications of joints and bones and post -traumatic craniocerebral or spinal injuries. 3

This was not the case in the past because most patients were discharged to old people s homes for further nursing care. Following the adoption of new treatment methods, an increasing number of our patients (20 40%) are able to leave the hospital premises on their own two feet, even after severe spinal cord injuries. About 42% of patients have the chance of occupational re-orientation. 4

5 Three-dimensional fluoroscopic depiction is available for optimum visualisation and reduction of fractures. Microscopic techniques are routinely used by the Department of Hand Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Microsurgery and the Department of Neurotraumatology (Neurosurgery). 5

6 The Trauma ICU has 11 units with modern equipment and 24-hour specialised medical care. Six separately air-conditioned units provide optimum hygienic conditions for the Burn Injury ICU. 6

7 Emergency room. Specialised techniques like the Ilizarov fixator are available for special cases such as complex fractures or malfunctions as well as for the repair of large bone defects. 7

8 Wheelchair training for paraplegics. In order to achieve the best functional results we emphasise optimum physiotherapy supported by therapeutic sports and occupational therapy. 8
