When we recognize this, we understand more fully the importance of the work we do. 3 Members: PAG Erkki Eskelinen, Forssa RC; P Leena-Maija Laurén, Turku Kupittaa RC and PP Olli Pihlava, Raumanmeri RC The committee held three meetings, on the dates , and The committee updated club meeting speech templates for the monthly themes, presentation material for the membership seminar and material to be used at introducing new members, as well as a template for the club annual activity plan. The membership committee conducted a survey and compiled a SWOT analysis. The membership committee arranged training at the Autumn Seminar and at the PETS. Member Introductions were held in Rauma and in Turku. In addition to these, committee members have visited clubs to talk on membership issues on basis of the SWOT analysis. The net membership development figures for the past year summed up at 1. The Rotary Foundation Committee: Chair: PDG Matti Urho, Turku Aboa Nova RC Members: PP Tauno Virtanen, Vammala RC, PP Risto Härkönen, Turku Kupittaa RC and DGN Matias Röyttä Turku International RC The Annual Fund: The objective of 45 USD/member was set at the PETS % of this was reached, meaning that clubs donated 74, USD into the Annual Fund. 15 of our clubs managed to reach or even exceed the objective. The PolioPlus Fund: The clubs donated totally 154, USD into the PolioPlus Fund. The district transferred 20,000 USD from the District Fund into the PolioPlus Fund. Thereby, the district managed to exceed the set objective of this challenge at 170 USD/Rotarian, to finally reach USD/Rotarian. During the past year, several clubs arranged fundraising events for this purpose. Worth mentioning are, among others events, the concert arranged by the Turku clubs in Turku Cathedral, the charity play arranged by RC Turku Aboa Nova in Turku Town Theatre, the musical Kakola, and the concert arranged by RC Paimio. The End Polio Now -logo was projected on the wall of Turku Cathedral, and pictures of this spread to the RI website, and was also showed at the International Assembly in San Diego. PolioPlus fundraising. During the past year, there was a fundraising arranged in order to collect funds for the PolioPlus. The fundraising was successful. Especially worth a mention is PDG Kari Kontula s great input in organizing and arranging the fundraising. Total foundation donations: Over the year, the clubs donated a total of 228, USD. The result is fantastic, and one of the best in the district s history. As for clubs, there is special reason to mention Mariehamn RC s donation of 45,495 USD, by which they reached 15 th position within the zone, as well as Godby RC s donation of 19, USD. The district awarded President Jesper Eliasson of Mariehamn RC and President Anita Häggblom of Godby RC with PHF recognitions at the District Conference. The majority of our clubs managed to reach their PolioPlus objectives. Unfortunately, however, there were two clubs who did not see the meaning in donating into this, the one most important purpose throughout times. Some clubs also showed a very low input. Approved grants: The district had at their disposal a total sum of 8,242 USD, equaling 5,788 euros for DSG grants. Grants of 800 Euros each were presented to seven clubs. They went to Godby RC, Forssa RC, Turku Aboa Nova RC, Urjala RC, Pori RC, Vehmaa RC and Laitila RC. 3

4 International Service Projects: The Pöltsamaa elderly home project was completed during the past rotary year. In May 2012, members from clubs in Kokemäki, Nakkila and Kyrösjärvi visited Pöltsamaa together with Governor Kari Kivistö to inspect the achievements. Now the service building has modern premises equipped with lifting devices for the care of ill patients. The project turned out to be a real success. The district awarded Project Manager, PP Tapio Salomaa from Kokemäki RC with PHF recognition. The Kenya literacy project. This project, originally started by Forssa RC has grown continuously, and has also reached international acknowledgement. This year, again, 800 computers were delivered to schools in Kenya, and the total number of computers distributed to Kenya throughout the project has so far reached 1,300. For the project, funding was applied from the department of development policy at the Foreign Ministry. The applications were in two parts, of 30,000 and 27,500 respectively, altogether 57,500. The first part is already disbursed, and the second part is expected in October At the District Conference, the district awarded Project Manager, PP Pentti Aspila with PHF recognition. The well project Zambia III. During the past year a new clean water project has started in Zambia. The fundraising period was extended to allow for a sufficient amount to enable the project to start and the applications being sent to RI. Manager for this project is Paavo Kajander from Pori RC. The GSE exchange: Chair for the GSE exchange for the past year was PP Risto Härkönen from Turku Kupittaa RC. The GSE exchange took place in collaboration with district 9690 in Australia. Our group visited Australia in Our group constituted of following Members: Liisa Vitikkala (Team Leader) from Meri-Pori RC, and group members: Anniina Halonen from Turku-Åbo RC, Nora Koivu from Raumanmeri RC, Johanna Larsson from Uskela RC and Lisa Westerlund from Mariehamn RC. The group members stayed with 8 families in Australia, one in each family, and presented themselves at the district 9690 District Conference, as well as in eight local clubs. The group from Australia visited Finland in Their group composition was: Liz MacKintosh (Team Leader), and group members: Edward Coss, Damian Cooper, Marc Andres and Margaret Mansour. Accommodation was arranged with altogether seven families, one group member in each. Also hotel accommodation in two Areas was included. The group presented themselves at our District Conference in Sastamala on the , as well as in ten local clubs. We arranged individually adjusted and professionally geared introduction programs, and a common social program for the group members. The district awarded PP Ristö Härkönen with PHF recognition at the District Conference. The Youth Exchange Chair of the Youth Exchange Committee for the past year was Kari Tuominen from Pori Kuninkaankartano RC. During the year totally 33 young students took part in the one-year exchange, and 32 came to our district from abroad. 13 youngsters went for summer exchange, with 11 coming to our district from abroad. 6 youngsters participated in the camp exchange. Traditionally, the youth exchange has worked excellently in our district, which applied to the past rotary year, too. RYLA: The Area 4 RYLA was arranged in Rauma on the

5 The Pori Area RYLA was held in the University Centre in Pori, and was a success. The Forssa Area arranged an especially good RYLA. It attracted a record number of participants with 50 students present. The project was fulfilled in collaboration with Forssa University of Applied Sciences. Remarkably, most of the participants were from abroad. Disquieting, however, was the lame interest in leadership and entrepreneurship among Finnish youngsters. The exam certificates were given on the in Forssa, where Governor Kari Kivistö handed out certificates to all students who passed the Rotary RYLA. The event was well recognized, and Rotary Norden published an article on the subject. The Baltic Sea Seminar: Preserving the Baltic Sea was elected our novel theme within the district strategic aims. The campaign started in Rauma at the Baltic Sea Seminar on the , attracting about 800 inducers from different parts of the business community. The event was a success. Arrangers were Raumanmeri RC. The target was to get Rotarians from all countries surrounding the Baltic Sea to join the work aiming at preserving and rescuing the Baltic Sea. The Autumn Seminar: The Autumn Seminar was held in Hämeenkyrö on the Kyröskoski RC was responsible for the arrangements. My special mention goes to PAG Aarre Taipale for his great input into the seminar arrangements. We heard, among other things, latest news about the RF new Future Vision Plan, which will change the Foundation s operations substantially. At the District Conference, the district awarded PAG Aarre Taipale with PHF recognition. PETS: The PETS was held in Turku on the Turku-Åbo RC was responsible for the arrangements, under supervision from DGE Berndt von Veh. Delegates visited the event from the RI office in Zurich. They informed about the service they offer clubs and districts. DGE Berndt von Veh presented the RI theme for the next year, Peace Through Service, and passed on regards from RI s next President, Sakuji Tanaka from Japan. PDG Matti Urho gave a lecture on The Rotary Foundation, DGN Matias Röyttä and PDG Kari Kontula lectured on the PolioPlus campaign. The participants also had opportunity to see the Art Chapel. At the District Conference the district awarded DGE Berndt von Veh with PHF recognition. The District Conference: The District Conference was arranged in Sastamala on the The conference theme was Internationalism in the National Landscape. The conference itself was held at Sylvää School, located in the center of Sastamala, and accommodation, as well as the Governor s Ball took place at Hotel Ellivuori. MP Arto Satonen and the City Mayor of Sastamala, Paavo Salli presented their warm welcomes to the event, and MP Arto Satonen also passed on the respects from Minister Paula Risikko. RI s respects were presented by Director Elect Ann-Britt Åsebol from Sweden, and the respects from the Nordic Rotary Districts by Governor Catharina Hedin of district 2330 in Sweden. Governor Kari Itkonen, district 1390, presented the Finnish Rotary Districts respects. Both GSE groups and 28 students from the exchange program presented themselves at the conference. Headmaster Jari Andersson gave the memorable speech, and everyone present will also certainly remember the pacey performances by the dance group Tyrwäkkäät. Altogether 133 Rotarians with their companions, from altogether 55 clubs attended the conference, and 33 special guests were invited. Vammala RC handled of the arrangements, with PP Seppo Mustonen being Chair of the arranging committee. At the District Conference, Vammala RC awarded PP Seppo Mustonen with PHF recognition. 5

6 Rotary Finland s distinguished service decoration the Medal, 1 st Class was granted to PDG Tauno Lovén from Pori Meri-Pori RC as recognition for his substantial inputs into different tasks he has performed for the Rotary movement. Sastamala-lehti. Äetsä RC published a newspaper Sastamala-lehti to become the District Conference newsletter. Without the District Conference attachment, the newspaper was distributed to all households in Sastamala and many of those in surrounding municipalities. Together with the attachment, it was posted to all Rotarians of the district. The District s economy: The Annual Report for the period is attached to this document. The outcome is positive by 10, euros. The main reasons for the positive outcome are three: firstly, the Governor managed to strike a very good deal with Hotel Ellivuori for the District Conference. Secondly, the travel costs were lower than estimated because of the Governors illness, which restricted him from participating in the Rotary Institute in Lilleström and in the District Conference in Sweden. Thirdly, DGE Berndt von Veh went unaccompanied to the RI Convention, which also saved expenses. Next year, our expenses are expected to return to their usual level. Finally: I now bid farewell to a unique Rotary year, filled with experiences. Acting as District Governor is an honor for only very few, and I have great reasons to express my thankfulness for being given the opportunity. It has been a great honor to serve the Rotary movement. For a person like me, commencing his year as Governor in a surgical theatre ( ), and still being able to perform all club visits, as well as all other tasks that come with the governorship, one cannot else than thank the Almighty, as well as all others who helped me during the past year. The objectives I set for my Rotary year have mostly been reached. Our district is in many respects Finland s best Rotary district. This is a thing we have great reason to be proud of. The future will certainly bring new challenges, especially regarding the preservation of the Baltic Sea, and the final victory over the polio. I wish my follower Berndt von Veh and his wife Marie the best of luck. Reach Within to Embrace Humanity. In Sastamala on the 1 st of September 2012 Kari Kivistö DG
