There is no designated media parking for FIU soccer matches, however, parking is available in the Panther Parking Garage or across the street from the west side of FIU Arena. Proceed south on 107th Avenue to SW 8th Street (SR 41/Tamiami Trail). Turn right on 8th Street, two traffic lights to SW 112th Avenue. 6 6 Scott Calabrese Head Coach - Second Season Southeast Region selection. Scott Calabrese enters his second season in 2015 as head coach of the FIU men s soccer program. Calabrese came to FIU after a successful six-year stint as head coach at East Tennessee State. During his first year at the helm of the FIU program, Calabrese led a young team to six victories, which included two wins over ranked foes in Michigan and San Diego State. Calabrese and his staff oversaw four players who garnered Conference USA All-Conference recognition. Highlighted by Quentin Albrecht representing FIU on the C-USA First Team, Marvin Hezel and Daniel Gonzalez captured spots on the C-USA Third Team squad, while Donald Tomlinson rounded out the group with All-Freshman team honors. Albrecht was also named an NSCAA All- Before coaching a game at FIU, Calabrese had already become active in the South Florida community. During the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Calabrese was a continuous guest analyst on WPLG Channel 10 s "Quest for the Cup." Calabrese joined Sports Director Will Manso, along with longtime professional soccer coach Thomas Rongen on a weekly basis, as they previewed upcoming World Cup contests for the week. Deeper into the tournament, Calabrese made multiple appearances each week, serving as a postgame analyst. Scott Calabrese brings a championship pedigree to FIU, FIU Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia said at the time of the hire. The success he has had at East Tennessee State both on the field (NCAA Tournament in 2010 and 2013) and in the classroom (Three-straight NSCAA Team Academic Award winner 2011, 2012, 2013), along with the coaching experience he possesses are what will guide our men s program to new heights. We are thrilled to have him as our head coach and expect great things for the future of FIU men s soccer. A program that began play in 2008, Calabrese led ETSU to two Atlantic Sun Tournament Championships (2010 and 2013), a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, and four consecutive seasons of 10 or more wins ( ). This past season, the Buccaneers were crowned 2013 Atlantic Sun Champions after earning a 3-1 victory over North Florida in the A-Sun Tournament Championship. Under Calabrese s tutelage, ETSU recorded an A-Sun record 10 shutouts en route to advancing to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Overall, the Buccaneers have earned four victories over Top 25 opponents, including a 1-0 road win over No. 8 UAB, the nation's top scoring offense, Sept. 15, ETSU has not lost to a Top 25 opponent dating back to Sept. 11, 2011, as the Buccaneers have carried a record over that time span. Calabrese and the Buccaneers earned the program s first ever national ranking in 2011, soaring to No. 19 in the Soccer America Poll and No. 24 in the NSCAA rankings. ETSU entered the 2011 A-Sun Tournament as a No. 6 seed, blew by Jacksonville in the quarterfinals and edged Stetson in the semis to become the first such seed to advance to the final. He led the Bucs to their most successful season in program history in Improving upon a six-win season in 2009, the Bucs won a program-record 15 games en route to winning the Atlantic Sun Championship and advancing to the program's first ever NCAA Tournament. Calabrese was also responsible for directing the Clemson Soccer Academy, which plays host to over 1,800 children each year. Calabrese previously was an assistant coach at North Carolina from , as he helped lead the Tar Heels to a National Championship in 2001 and an ACC championship and Elite Eight appearance in He also was an assistant coach in the A-Sun Conference with the Stetson Haters from A native of Newton, Conn., Calabrese brings some professional experience to FIU as well. He served as an assistant coach for the Carolina Courage of the WUSA, as he helped lead them to the 2002 WUSA title. He also played professionally for the Rhode Island Sting Rays from , as well as the South Carolina Shamrocks in Calabrese was a member of the 2006 Olympic Development Program Region III coaching staff as well as the goalkeepers coach for the U.S. Women s National Team. Calabrese has an A coaching license, and is a Level I and II certified goalkeeping instructor with the NSCAA. 7 Kevin Nylen Assistant Coach - Fourth Season selection. Kevin Nylen enters his fourth season in 2015 as an assistant coach at FIU, his second season alongside Head Coach Scott Calabrese. Nylen came to FIU in 2012 after spending the previous two years as an assistant at Boston College. During the 2014 campaign, Nylen helped Calabrese lead a young team to six victories, which included two wins over ranked foes in Michigan and San Diego State. The staff oversaw four players who garnered Conference USA All-Conference recognition. Highlighted by Quentin Albrecht representing FIU on the C-USA First Team, Marvin Hezel and Daniel Gonzalez captured spots on the C-USA Third Team squad, while Donald Tomlinson rounded out the group with All-Freshman team honors. Albrecht was also named an NSCAA All-Southeast Region In his first year at FIU alongside then-head Coach Ken Arena, Nylen helped lead the Panthers to an overall mark during the 2012 season, the most wins since FIU also posted eight during the 2005 season. The Panthers, who outscored their opponents in 2012, were led by Quentin Albrecht who was a Third Team All- South Region selection and was also named to the Conference USA All-Conference Second Team. The 2013 campaign brought even more improvement to the program, as FIU had its best points finish in the C-USA standings since Additionally, Albrecht and Gonzalo Frechilla were named Second Team All-Conference, while freshman Marvin Hezel earned All-Freshman Team Honors. Nylen helped showcase a very talented 2013 freshman class consisting of 15 players, which was rated Top 25 nationally for incoming classes. During his first season at Boston College in 2010, the Eagles advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament and earned one of the 27 atlarge berths to the NCAA Championship. Three Eagles earned 2010 All-ACC honors, including an All-ACC First Team player in forward Charlie Rugg, who became the fifth player in program history to earn first team honors. Jean Camere Assistant Coach - Fourth Season Jean Camere enters his fourth year in 2015 as an assistant coach at FIU. Camere joined the Panthers in 2012 and is in his second season as a member of Head Coach Scott Calabrese s staff. During the 2014 campaign, Camere helped the staff lead a young team to six victories, which included two wins over ranked foes in Michigan and San Diego State. FIU had four players who garnered Conference USA All-Conference recognition, highlighted by Quentin Albrecht representing FIU on the C-USA First Team and earning an NSCAA All-Southeast Region selection. Camere s first two seasons alongside then-head Coach Ken Arena were footsteps in the right direction for the FIU men s soccer program. In 2012, the Panthers finished with an overall mark, the most wins since FIU also posted eight during the 2005 season. As a sophomore, Quentin Albrecht was a Third Team All-South Region selection and was also named to the Conference USA All-Conference Second Team. FIU saw even more improvement in 2013, as the Panthers had their best points finish in the C-USA standings since Albrecht and Gonzalo Frechilla were named Second Team All-Conference, while freshman Marvin Hezel earned All-Freshman Team Honors. Camere played for St. John s University during the seasons, where he competed in the Division I National Championship against Indiana in That season, the Red Storm captured the BIG EAST regular season title and finished overall. The following year he transferred to FIU and played during the seasons. After starting 14-of-16 games for FIU, Camere earned First-Team All-Atlantic Soccer Conference honors while leading the Panthers to the ASC Championship. After graduating from FIU, Camere took on the position of head coach of boys varsity Nylen s 2011 season at BC was even more of a success, as the Eagles advanced to the finals of the ACC Tournament marking the fifth-straight time that the squad made it to at least the semifinal stage. BC earned a berth into the NCAA Championship for the fifth-straight year. Four players earned 2011 All-ACC honors. Rugg was named to the First Team for the second consecutive season, while Kyle Bekker made his first appearance on the First Team. Nylen began his coaching career in August of 2009 at Amherst College. He was a first-team All-America selection at Saint Anselm College and the 2002 Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Before beginning his coaching career in August of 2009 at Amherst College, Nylen enjoyed a six-year professional playing career. 8 Sebastian Frings Assistant Coach - Third Season Former FIU standout Sebastian Frings enters his second stint as a volunteer assistant coach for the FIU men s soccer program. Frings previously was an assistant coach for the program on Kenny Arena s staff from August 2012 to December Frings brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the program. During his time on Arena s staff, he also worked the Arena Soccer Academy in Frings has spent time with the Real Madrid Soccer Academy as well, as he served as an assistant coach for the Under 18 team from January 2013 to December 2013 before being elevated to the current head coach of that squad in September Frings has also spent some time volunteering at youth camps and clinics. For two years ( ) he was a coach at the Soccer Camp for Children with Down Syndrome. A native of Germany, Frings was a camp instructor in his home country as he worked the Fortuna Duesseldorf U-18 Summer Camp. During his time as a player at FIU, Frings was a four-year letter winner, was named a 2009 All-Conference USA selection and the 2010 FIU offensive MVP. Spencer Phillips Strength Coach - Second Season Spencer Phillips is in his second season with FIU as a Graduate Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach. He assists with the Panther's football team in all aspects of strength & conditioning. He is also in charge of complete design and implementation of strength programs for men and women's soccer and swimming and diving. Phillips comes to FIU from Indiana University where he was an intern then Graduate assistant intern coach from January 2011-March 2014 before accepting the position with FIU. While at Indiana, Phillips worked with 20 of Indiana s athletic teams including a National Championship and Big Ten Champion men s soccer team, Big Ten Champion and College World series men s baseball team and CWPA Champion Women s water polo team.
