3 JUDGE S INSTRUCTIONS DIRECTIONS, PROCEDURES AND JUDGE S ROLE In preparation for this event, you should review the following information with your event manager and other judges: 1. Procedures st Century Skills and Performance Indicators 3. Event Situation 4. Judge Situation Characterization Participants may conduct a slightly different type of meeting and/or discussion with you each time; however, it is important that the information you provide and the questions you ask be uniform for every participant. 5. Judge s Evaluation Instructions 6. Judge s Evaluation Form Please use a critical and consistent eye in rating each participant. JUDGE SITUATION CHARACTERIZATION You are to assume the role of a cashier at MILANO S SUPERMARKET, a local single unit grocery store. You want to be promoted to a service desk clerk and have asked a co-worker that is currently a service desk clerk (participant) about the position and the importance of customer relations. Service desk clerks at MILANO S SUPERMARKET help customers with a variety of services; money orders, postage stamps, carpet shampoo machine rentals, utility bill payments, returns, complaints and job applications. Service desk clerks must be able to answer questions, solve problems and offer service with a smile. You would like to apply for a service desk clerk position. You have asked a current service desk clerk (participant) to explain the importance of customer relations in the role of service desk clerk and how the position represents the company. You will begin the role-play by asking about customer relations. During the course of the role-play you are to ask the following questions of each participant: 1. What are the most important skills that a service desk clerk must possess to be successful? 3
4 2. Are there personality types that would not be good at this job? Once the service desk clerk (participant) has answered your questions, you will conclude the discussion by thanking the service desk clerk (participant) for the work. You are not to make any comments after the event is over except to thank the participant. Answers will vary but should demonstrate a basic understanding of the concepts. 4
