1 PUBERTY CHANGES GAME PUBERTY CHANGES Game GRADE 4+ LEARNER OUTCOME: Students examine physical, relational and emotional puberty changes and determine changes that are unique to boys and girls and changes that are common to both. MATERIALS: 1. Changes Headings 2. Puberty Changes Cards INTRODUCTION: This game provides a fun forum to stimulate open discussion about puberty changes. The game rules should be adapted to best suit your classroom and we encourage discussion during the teachable moments. APPROACHES/STRATEGIES: A. GROUND RULES (5-10 min) Ensure ground rules are established before beginning this lesson. For classes that have already established ground rules, quickly reviewing them can promote a successful lesson. B. TEACHER GUIDELINES: Print the puberty changes cards and both sets of headings boys, girls and both and physical, emotional and relational. Post the following titles on the wall: Boys, Girls and Both Distribute the puberty changes cards, one to each student, or have students take a card from a pile. Students can work in pairs or alone to place each card under the title which best fits the puberty change described. 1

2 PUBERTY CHANGES GAME As a class, review the card placements, and make the necessary changes according to the Puberty Changes answer key. Explain changes that participants do not understand. Once the students have a clear understanding, you may choose to redistribute the puberty changes cards and have the students now decide which changes are physical, emotional and relational. QUESTION BOX (10 min) Have students fill out questions and address them next class. SELF REFLECTION During the game, were: Ground rules being followed? Good practices established regarding group work and discussion? What will you change for future classes with this group? What will you change for future use of this game? This game was developed by Sexual and Reproductive Health Promotion Team, Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services. 2
