1 20 CORPORATE THE PHILADELPHIA CHILDREN S ALLIANCE AND THE BRIDGE TO HEALING CORPORATE 20 Working Together to Bring Justice and Healing for Sexually Abused Children in Philadelphia
2 Changing The Garden of Hope Dynamic the in our Workplaces and our Community The ACE Study and how it has informed our work We know that one out of 4 girls and one out of 6 boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. That statistic has not changed in decades. What has changed is the way we respond to allegations of child sexual abuse today thanks to agencies like the Philadelphia Children s Alliance. Through the Children s Advocacy Center movement, our team based approach has created a safety net for children who disclose abuse; a safety net that was sadly lacking for many adults in the workforce today. The Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Study is a decade long and ongoing study designed to examine the childhood origins of many of our Nation s leading health and social problems. The study asked these 17,337 adults about ten types of childhood trauma referred to as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) including child sexual abuse. The ACE Study has shown us that those who experience child abuse are much more likely to engage in risky healthadverse behaviors during childhood and adolescence including smoking, sexual activity with multiple partners, illicit drug and alcohol use; adolescent pregnancies and suicide attempts. Adult survivors in our community - those who received no intervention or services like those provided today at PCA - tell us that for much of their adult lives, they have thought about their abuse constantly; that those early experiences dominate their thoughts and define their lives every single day. Many have struggled with the behavior and health issues named above. Our partnership through the Corporate 20 is changing a dynamic that had been unchanged for generations; a dynamic that significantly impacts our workplaces and our communities. Together, by building a safety net for ALL of the children in Philadelphia who experience sexual abuse, we are strengthening and improving lives and changing the future for those who will work in your businesses and share your communities in years to come. Knowing the one in four and one in six statistic, you can look at your workplace through new eyes and you can look at our partnership with pride in what we are accomplishing together. 64% of the study s participants had experienced one or more categories of adverse childhood experiences. Of the more than fifty ACE Study research papers published since 1998, all point to a strong link between ACEs and the adult onset of chronic illnesses. Those with ACE scores of 4 or more had significantly higher rates of heart disease and diabetes than those with ACE scores of zero. Multiple ACEs were strongly linked to early death. People with six or more ACEs died nearly 20 years earlier on average than those without. That translated to 60.6 years of life vs years of life; another shocking statistic.
3 Who is the bridge to healing As the catalyst for a team-based approach for child victims of sexual abuse, the Philadelphia Children s Alliance has fought to reduce trauma to children, increase efficiency in the system, and provide justice and healing for child victims in a safe and timely manner. Our team-based approach has grown to include corporate partners in an initiative called the Corporate 20 Bridge to Healing. Within the Corporate 20, twenty corporations operating in the Greater Philadelphia area will join with us in advancing our mission to bring healing and justice to the children we serve. They will provide vital funding support for our programs and underpin the success of our annual fundraising through sponsorship of our most significant special event, The Bear Affair. The President or CEO of each partner corporation will serve on the Corporate 20 Advisory Board offering industry specific advice as needed by our Board of Directors and Staff. Together, the Corporate 20 forms a network of support for the Philadelphia Children s Alliance while also establishing an opportunity for synergy and leadership training among and within the corporations, executives, and employees involved. Our Corporate 20 partners have created a safety net for services vital to the health and future of the city of Philadelphia. In addition to corporate financial support, employees of our Corporate 20 host fundraising events, collect teddy bears, compete (and chow down!) in Wing Bowls and Chili Cook-offs, hit softballs out of the park, tee off at Aon s Annual Charity Golf Outing, and serve on the planning committee for The Bear Affair. Philadelphia Children s Alliance provides the best possible process and outcomes for children who have experienced sexual abuse. We are determined that all children in Philadelphia who disclose such abuse should have the benefit of the PCA experience. With the move to our new co-located facility now complete, we have at last built the capacity to serve 100% of child victims and their families. We now turn our focus toward securing the resources necessary to secure that capacity and sustain our growth in the years to come. Our Corporate 20 partners will be instrumental in the success of this vital next step.
4 Mission Statement The Philadelphia Children s Alliance, an independent non-profit organization, promotes healing and justice for child sexual abuse victims in Philadelphia by conducting state of the art forensic interviews, providing victim support and counseling services, collaborating with other agencies and leading the development of an integrated response. About the Alliance One out of four girls and one out of six boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. In Philadelphia, every month, more than 250 cases of child sexual abuse are reported. In our city, all children who make allegations of sexual abuse are brought to the Philadelphia Safety Collaborative a partnership between the Philadelphia Children s Alliance, Special Victims Unit of the Philadelphia Police Department, the Department of Human Services, the District Attorney s Office and our medical and mental health partners. The Philadelphia Children s Alliance (PCA) facilitates this model partnership. PCA exists for one purpose: to provide a safe and supportive response for these children. PCA is a place where abused children can talk about what happened to them, and where families and non-offending caregivers can find the support and structure they need to help them support their child through the process. Through our work, we protect victims, end the cycle of abuse, and improve the quality of investigations in order to bring healing and justice to all child victims. The Philadelphia Safety Collaborative, a one-stop, state-of-the-art facility which opened in August 2013, houses the SVU, DHS social workers, district attorneys, and the entire PCA staff. In this facility, we have the unprecedented opportunity to intervene immediately and collaboratively on ALL allegations of child sexual abuse. We are able to interview children, educate caregivers and connect them to relevant treatment providers, both onsite and in the community. We are open 9 a.m. 9 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 24/7 on call for all other times. Children are seen by our expert PCA Forensic Interviewers specially trained to work with child victims. Children and their families and/or non-offending caregivers receive support services from our team of highly trained Victim Advocates and counseling services are provided through our onsite Mental Health program. Medical services are provided through our Medical Clinic staffed by nurses and physicians from CHOP and St. Christopher s Hospital for Children. As our capacity has grown, our numbers have doubled. We continue to seek the unrestricted funding necessary to maintain and expand existing core services as we serve 100% of the children.
