A winning team must perform consistently at a high level game after game. Make your team faster, stronger, more alert and better prepared with the ise Performance Centre

ise PERFORMANCE CENTRE FOOTBALL Who are we? The Institute of Sport and Exercise (ISE), University of Dundee, has an established expertise and reputation, built over several decades, for the delivery of integrated sports science support, across the football performance continuum. In addition to the Performance Pathway of developmental and educational work that we can offer youth squads, we have helped prepare winning squads and officials across SFL, SPL, national and international levels. Could you be next? What do we do? Sports science is the use of a scientific approach to assist squads to train smart and to improve performance in football. Local, national and professional squads from across the country are increasingly using the ISE Performance Centre for: Assessment of football-specific fitness. Design and implementation of periodised annual training plans. Provision of supervised strength and conditioning programmes. Monitoring and regulation of training intensities. Implementation of recovery and regeneration strategies. Injury prevention techniques. Development and delivery of long term athlete development programmes. The expertise and reputation of the staff at ISE is well established. The high quality support that they provide is integral to the development of players fitness levels and impacts directly on training, preparation and, ultimately, on performance. BARRY SMITH MANAGER DUNDEE FC

SPORTS SCIENCE SERVICES 1 Fitness Testing Fitness testing provides the best indication of the physical strengths and weaknesses of squads and individual players. Carried out at key points throughout the season, fitness testing will allow the success of training programmes to be assessed and altered accordingly. Any changes in an individual s fitness levels will be monitored and any fall off in fitness levels can be identified and combated. Tests used are specific to the demands of football and commonly assess the following areas: The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences provide rigorous quality assurance in the form of laboratory accreditation. ISE is one of only two laboratories in Scotland to hold this accolade. GLYN HOWATSON CHAIR BASES LABORATORY ACCREDITATION GROUP Anthropometry and Body Composition Excess body fat can hinder speed, endurance and power output, so it is important that players body fat levels are maintained at optimum levels. Flexibility There is a high incidence of injury in football, particularly of the hamstrings and lower back. Good levels of flexibility and mobility are essential to prevent injury and to improve performance. Speed and Agility Performance in football requires more than just being able to run fast. Players need the ability to accelerate, decelerate and undertake rapid movements in all directions. Strength and Power Football specific strength and power is essential to maximise performance of all basic movement patterns in football (sprinting, jumping, kicking, throwing) as well as maintaining stability and preventing injury. Aerobic Capacity The nature of the game of football demands a high level of aerobic fitness (stamina) to ensure that players are able to maintain a high overall work rate, offset fatigue and speed up recovery.

SPORTS SCIENCE SERVICES 2 Monitoring Training 3 Programming Monitoring tools can complement the testing programmes by providing scientific feedback on all aspects of training. This can include: The development of football specific fitness is essential in the modern game. The following services reflect this: Programme design Individualised, football specific, periodised training programmes can be designed to target weaknesses, prevent injury and improve performance. Heart rate monitoring: Analyse the intensity of training sessions/matches. GPS monitoring: Analyse intensity at a greater level by monitoring speeds, distances and pitch positions covered by players in training/matches. Strength and conditioning sessions Supervised strength and conditioning sessions can be directed and delivered by UKSCA accredited strength and conditioning coaches. Blood lactate monitoring: Set heart rate training zones based on lactate profiles to ensure players are working at the correct training intensity for them as individuals. 4 Education A range of educational workshops on all aspects of performance can be provided on an individual or team basis. Portable VO2 monitoring: Evaluate if players are energy efficient and working at the correct intensity by directly measuring oxygen uptake during training. Topics include, but are not limited to: Training for football (eg dynamic warm-up, strength, speed, recovery) Fluid and nutrition Heart rate trace HR [bpm] 190 HR [bpm] :00:00 0:20:00 Cursor values: Time: 0:00:00 HR: 101 bpm Calorie rate: 234 kcal/60min Person Exercise Sport Note bpm 10 Case Study Running 0:40:00 Date Time Duration 1:00:00 08/11/ :43:33 1:35:45.3 1:20:00 Heart rate average 140 bpm Heart rate max 181 bpm Selection Limits 1 Limits 2 Limits 3 0:00:00-1:35:45 (1:35:45.0) 30 Time Planning (eg monitoring, training diaries, periodisation) Other specialist sports science topics (eg recovery, acclimatisation)

CONTACT US All our sports science packages are designed and delivered specific to your team s and players needs.
