2 COURSE DESCRIPTION Syllabus Congratulations! You have made a wise choice. I cannot think of any subject that is more important than the study of the life of Christ. Throughout history, men have claimed that they had a message from God to bring to the world. They lived and died and, in some cases, they started powerful religious movements. Jesus Christ, however, is different than all other religious leaders. He not only claimed that He came from God; He boldly declared that He was God. Jesus lived and died, but then He conquered death. You can worship at the tomb of the founders of the world s greatest religions but not at the tomb of Jesus. His tomb is empty. In fact, we are not even certain where He was buried because the body is missing. Jesus resurrection sets Him apart from all others who alleged that they were messengers of God. His victory over death confirms His outrageous claim that He was the Son of God. So, in choosing to study the life of Christ, you have not chosen to learn about merely a great religious teacher; you are going to learn about God manifested in the flesh. I AM what I was God. I was not what I am Man. I am now called both GOD and MAN. COURSE OBJECTIVES This course is a three-credit-hour study of the life of Christ. The goal is to survey the earthly life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ, focusing on key events and discourses. We will study these events and discourses in their chronological and geographical order, using all four of the Gospels to develop a harmony of the life of Christ. Upon completion of this course you should be able to trace chronologically and geographically the major events of Christ s life from His birth to His resurrection and ascension. explain how Jesus actions and teachings supported His claims that He was the Son of God and the Savior of the world. identify the book and chapter reference for key events and teachings of Christ. demonstrate in your lifestyle measurable growth in your love and devotion to Jesus Christ as both Savior and Lord. TEXTBOOKS Required The Bible (A harmony of the Gospels is recommended, but you may use any Bible of your choice.) Harrison, Everett F. A Short Life of Christ. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, Syllabus: Page 1
3 Recommended Thomas, Robert L. and Stanley N. Gundry. The NIV Harmony of the Gospels. San Francisco: HarperCollins, This is a revision of A. T. Robertson s Harmony. This is a standard harmony on the four Gospels. It contains helpful and informative footnotes and twelve essays on different issues related to the study of the life of Christ. The Harmony is also available in the NASB version. Stein, Robert H. Jesus the Messiah. Downers Grove, Ill.: InterVarsity, This is more current survey on the life of Christ, and though it is more technical than the text by Harrison, I highly recommend it for those who want additional information on the life of Christ.
