AFCS Application OSP Automated Fiber Management David Altstaetter Calient Networks, Inc. March 2010
Introduction Optical switching technology makes it possible to automate OSP fiber networks. Automating fiber networks allow the service provider to: Centralize Fiber Restoration Maximize the use of fiber resources by eliminating stranded fiber capacity Centralize end to end service provisioning Maximize the use capital equipment: Optical Transport Router Ports Test Equipment Centralize troubleshooting expertise Optical Switching reduces overall truck rolls and hands in the plant Applications & Education Committee 2
Automating Fiber Management in Your Network Applications & Education Committee 3
Benefits of the Automation in FTTx Significantly improved test and measurement capability of distribution and drop fibers Automation of testing at distribution and drop installation Remote testing of subscriber faults Reduction in truck rolls for new subscribers and subscriber churn Efficient utilization 1:N Protection Applications & Education Committee 4
Distribution and Drop Fiber Testing Optical switches allow the carrier to verify installation of distribution fibers. Most carriers use contractors to install distribution fibers End to end verification of feeder/distribution fiber installation is a challenge for carriers Most current OTDRs cannot see past 1:32 splitters. Optical switches make it possible to centralize test equipment in the CO and remotely and/or automatically test OSP for end to end connectivity. Remote management of OSP allows centralized management of fiber and connectivity data. Applications & Education Committee 5

Reduction in Truck Rolls Automation of the outside fiber plant using optical switches significantly reduces the number of technician dispatches The PMO for service providers is to dispatch a technician to the for every new subscriber and troubleshooting existing subscriber faults. Technicians spend too much time in the FDF,, and MDU. Optical switching eliminates the need for hands in the plant for routine operations. Applications & Education Committee 11
Utilization Optical Switches in the Fiber Distribution Hub () or in the basement of Multi-Dwelling Units allow the service provider to maximize utilization of s. The PMO for service providers is to dispatch a technician to the for every new subscriber. Subscriber churn typically results in under utilization of resources Carriers can maintain optimal utilization by using optical switches to manage end to end connectivity. Optical Switches allow service providers to balance subscriber loads across resources. Applications & Education Committee 12

1:N Protection Optical switches allow the service provider to quickly restore service in the event of an failure. failures result in loss of service to multiple customers. Troubleshooting and restoration can be lengthy. Outages can result in a loss of revenue and loss of customers. Optical switches in either the CO, or MDU give the service provider a way to quickly restore service to affected customers. Applications & Education Committee 23

Fiber Management: PMO Using conventional fiber connection technologies (connectors, splices) Connector issues : cleaning, accessibility Patch-cord management issues No accurate documentation Changes require manual intervention Applications & Education Committee 26
Automated Fiber Management in the OSP Optical Switching means the technician cleans and terminates each fiber once for the life of the Tx/Rx not the connection. Optical Switching reduces overall truck rolls and hands in the plant Reduction in capital equipment: Optical Transport; Router Ports; Test Equipment Centralized provisioning, restoration, fault isolation and troubleshooting.
