Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? School (TES) has a unique history. Originally, Annandale Elementary School, it served the African American children of the Topsail area. It later became a K-2 integrated primary school, then a K-5 school, transitioned to a middle school and once again returned to its elementary school roots in 2009 when it reopened as School. TES is one of the three schools that serve students from the east side of Pender County. We are the centrally located school, sharing school borders with our 'sister schools', North and South Schools. Currently, it serves 539 students with a total staff of % of our staff has advanced degrees and eight are National Board certified. Our staff is experienced with 56% having 10+ years, 31% having 4-10 years and only 13% with 0-3 years of experience. Despite the growth of the Hampstead area, our school population has stayed relatively constant with very little change in our demographics. The School demographic breakdown is total enrollment 539, Males 54%, Females 46%, American Indian.19%, Hawaiian Pacific.37%, Asian,.3%, Hispanic 3.9%, Black 5%, White 85%, and Multi 4%. TES enjoys some features that allow students and staff some unique opportunities. One such feature is our shared location with Topsail Middle and High Schools. We have worked hard to establish partnerships that are mutually beneficial. For example, Topsail High School teacher cadets come to TES and volunteer in our classrooms, AP students are part of the judging of our Science Fair projects and quite a few seniors chose Senior Projects that are completed here. We have been able to attend dress rehearsals of THS plays or concerts. Our 5th graders and EC students benefit from just a short walk across the driveway to attend transition events or other activities (Ex. Middle School Battle of the Books competitions). TES is very happy to have two regional EC classrooms here. Teachers and students work hard to insure inclusive opportunities that are meaningful that can build lifelong attitudes of tolerance and the appreciation of the idea that everyone belongs. Another unique attribute to TES is our collaboration with community groups. In the past we have partnered with the local Rotary Club to help end polio. We continue to work with the Kiwanis Club, sponsoring two KKid after-school clubs who look for service opportunities in Hampstead. We continue to widen our collaboration with local churches. We are in our second year of building a church tutor/volunteer program and we will sponsor our 3rd Stop Hunger Now event, hoping to package 14,000 meals in a ½ day with the help of our church friends. TES is also presented with some unique challenges. The greatest challenge to TES is the wide diversity with regard to the socio-economic status of our families. Currently TES hovers around 32% with regard to our free or reduced lunch status. Therefore, TES is not a Title I school. However we serve some of the neediest neighborhoods in Hampstead. Children come from extreme poverty where food, clothing and access to technology is a very real problem. Many of these students come to school with limited experiences, vocabulary and exposure to books. Inversely, we have students who come from high income families who have many opportunities to travel and truly lack for nothing. The challenge comes with insuring growth for all students across this wide range without the additional staffing that often comes with being a Title I school. As such, TES teachers work hard to provide intervention when needed, and enrichment when warranted; balancing the need for both growth and proficiency. Page 2

School's Purpose Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. Belief Statement: - Learning is our focus, and is not limited to academics. - Working together achieves positive, desired outcomes. - Decision-making will be driven by results, not our intentions. - Proactive problem-solving and interventions allow students to excel. - Expectations shall be taught and consistently modeled. - High expectations are met when children are nurtured and challenged. - Fostering a culture of celebration, we acknowledge effort, kindness and academic achievement! School Mission Statement: - In partnership with families and invested individuals, TES seeks to build a thriving and culturally-responsive school community, dedicated to continued growth that makes learning a reality for all. - Strives to provide and create differentiated learning opportunities that will prepare and inspire our students to excel in the 21st Century world. - Is committed to a safe environment where all individuals experience success and a sense of belonging. While we at TES recognize the importance of academics, we are devoted to the growth of the whole child. We teach our students about kindness and compassion as well as reading and math. We look for and reinforce our student's efforts; academically, socially, and behaviorally, with Positive Behavior Referrals. The entire staff works together, regardless of their specific role, to do what is best for students every day. At the beginning of the school year and as necessary throughout the year we provide students with expectations for behavior and model for them what makes a good, responsible student. TES is committed to providing students with many opportunities for service that can impact people locally and globally. Each year different opportunities arise that allow us, as a school, to make a difference. Or, TES chooses to repeat projects that have had a significant impression on our students. Long term projects include supporting local food banks and our own 'backpack program', Christmas cards and candy to troops in the Middle East, and Stop Hunger Now events. pennies for Polio and Polar bears, soda can tabs for Ronald McDonald House, food for a local pet shelter, help on a Habitat for Humanity house, trips to the nursing home and donation of small toys and arts and craft materials for Iraqi children have been just some of our singular projects. TES staff works hard to live out and model the premise that working together can make a positive difference. As such, students are held to the expectation that kindness matters and generosity of spirit can make a difference. TES is also committed to student learning. The words in both our Belief and Mission statements attest to our focus on student learning. We continue to find ways to share our expectations to students. The addition of 'I can' statements in some classrooms, rubrics and shared data collection in the upper grades have helped students be more involved and engaged in goal setting. We acknowledge their efforts through publicized Honor Roll lists, classroom award celebrations and quarterly Honor Roll breakfasts. A safe and orderly educational environment is also paramount for learning to take place. TES is a PBIS school and spends significant time to communicate our behavioral expectations, then teach, model and acknowledge these positive behaviors. TES prides itself on being a school that seeks to grow children academically and emotionally. Page 3

Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. TES's self-assessment, survey results and performance diagnostic show the following notable achievements: - Our school provides a safe learning environment - Our school's purpose statement is clearly focused on student success - Our school has high expectations for students in all classes. - Our school had the highest composite elementary EOG score in the county. TES's School Improvement Plan and survey results indicate the following areas of need: - Achievement gap for our small African American students - Achievement gap for our EC students - Move from 'met growth' to 'exceed growth' In order to address these concerns, TES will continue to look at data by sub-group and by individual student. We will continue to evaluate and purchase resources that can directly benefit these Tier 2 learners. TES will continue to provide small group, skill based intervention groups to address deficit areas. Inversely, TES will continue to address the growth needs of our AIG students. TES will continue to rely heavily on both our Literacy and AIG coaches for planning, selection of resources and data analysis. TES will also need to participate in math professional development offered at both the county and school level to improve overall core instruction. Page 5

Additional Information Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections. School, home of the Ospreys, are proud to proclaim, "Watch us SOAR!" Students, staff, and parents and guardians are committed to being a school of self-control, organized, always safe, and respectful. Indeed, the entire community works hard to make our school "the place" where all students can play, learn, and grow together. Page 6
