1 On August 24, 2013, Mr. Greg Bayens of Fairfax County, Virginia, shared the following information with Michael Walton of South Riding, Virginia. Mr. Bayens is writing a book about his family history and one of the sections of the book details Christian and Ernst Veldman. According to Mr. Bayens: Johanna Veldman, Christian's sister, was my great grandmother. She married Joseph Bayens and moved to Louisville, Kentucky. Johanna's and Christian's parents, Henry Veldman and Johanna Baale, were my great-great grandparents, and [Michael Walton s] great-great-great grandparents. That makes me and your father 3rd cousins, and makes us 3rd cousins once removed. I grew up in Louisville and moved to the Washington area after college, and now live in Fairfax County just west of Fairfax City. The following information is excerpted from Mr. Bayens s book. Chapter 10 THE VELDMAN SONS AFTER THE CIVIL WAR ERNST AND CHRISTIAN The lives of Ernst and Christian were so intertwined that it is difficult to write about them separately. Seven weeks after Marinus and Mary were wed, Ernst got married in the same church, Saint Anthony s. On 9 January 1866, Ernst married Anna Barbara Maas. 1 Anna was born 29 March and, like Ernst, had been born in the Netherlands and come to America as a child, probably about 1850 at the age of three. 3 That same year, on 27 November 1866, at Saint Philomena s Church (a German language Catholic church on Pearl Street), Christian married Mary Magdalena Bach, known as Lena. Lena was born in Ohio of German parents in April At about this same time Christian moved across the river to Kentucky. He bought a house at 40 Locust Street in Newport that he 1 Jeffrey G. Herbert, Restored Hamilton County, Ohio Marriages , (Cincinnati, Ohio), Birth date calculated from Death record for Anna Veldmann, 26 February 1907, Blegen Library, Archives and Rare Books, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio U.S. census, Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky, population schedule, E.D. 26, Sheet 2A (penned), line 30, Anna Veldman, NARA microfilm publication T623, roll Ibid., E.D. 18, Sheet 6B (penned), lines 62 and 63, John C. and Lena Veldman. This census reported birth month and year, number of years married, and birthplace of parents. Although the 1870 census lists Lena s birthplace as Hassen, all other records list it as Ohio.
2 would live in for almost three decades. It was located on the south side of Locust Street between Brighton and Lowell Streets. When Newport revised the names of some of its streets around 1892, the address became 524 W. 7 th Street. The house is no longer there, and the area is now occupied by commercial and light industrial businesses. 5 Although Christian moved to Newport, he continued to work in Cincinnati. City directories show that he worked as a shoemaker at various locations in Cincinnati near the river: 115 W. Pearl 6, Main and 3 rd 7, 46 W. Pearl 8, 10 E. 7 th 9, 295 Main 10, and 239 Sycamore 11. Most of these locations no longer exist, but have been replaced by the Interstate 71. Pearl Street ran between 2 nd and 3 rd Streets, where I-71 now stands. Despite living in a different state, Christian did not have a long commute. Maps of that period show that he lived very near a suspension bridge over the narrow Licking River to Covington. From there it was a short walk to the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge that crossed the wide Ohio River to Cincinnati. All of Christian s workplaces in Cincinnati were within a few blocks of the bridge. Altogether, his commute was little more than a mile. It may be that the opening of the Roebling Bridge in 1866 contributed to Christian s decision to move to Kentucky. 5 Information on Christian s residence is based on Newport city directories (usually a section of Cincinnati city directories) from 1867 to 1895, and the 1870 and 1880 censuses. 6 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1873, p. 844, and June 1876, p. 966, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1873 and 1876). 7 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1878, p. 960, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1878). 8 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1883, p. 1212, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1883). 9 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1885, p. 1365, June 1886, p. 1387, and June 1887, p. 1448, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1885, 1886, and 1887). 10 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1890, p. 1370, June 1891, p. 1422, June 1893, p. 1580, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1890, 1891, and 1893). 11 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1894, p. 1551, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1894).

4 Ernst continued to work as a shoemaker at this time. He lived at 550 Walnut 12, then at 78 Hopkins 13. Later his workplace was listed as 57 W. Pearl. 14 At some point, probably about 1868, he too moved across the river to Newport, and in fact moved next door to his brother, at 38 Locust Street. He would live there until the mid-1880s. 15 Also like Christian, he continued to work in Cincinnati, at 90 Main for several years, 16 then at 121 Main. 17 About 1868, after moving to Kentucky, Ernst and Anna had a daughter named Annie, listed in the 1880 census. 18 No other definite mention of this girl could be found, but the records of Corpus Christi Church, which the Veldmans attended, list the death of 37-year-old Anna Feldmann on 31 January In the 1885 and 1886 Ernst disappeared from the city directories in the Cincinnati area. Curiously, a shoemaker by that name appeared in Louisville in those years, at 1709 High Avenue in 1885 and th in (Streets in this area were later demolished to make way for Interstate 64.) Had Ernst fallen on hard times and was looking for better opportunities in the city where his sister Johanna lived, and where his brother John had moved and was buried? The next year Ernst reemerged, working in Cincinnati, first at 8 th and Culvert, 21 then at 285 Main 22 while Christian was working at 295 Main. Also about this time, from about 1890 to 12 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1867, p. 471, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1867). 13 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1868, p. 516, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1868). 14 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1871, p. 694 and 1872, p. 1059, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1871 and 1872). 15 Information on Ernst s residence is based on Newport city directories (usually a section of Cincinnati city directories) from 1872 to 1884, and the 1880 census. 16 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1875, p. 932, 1876, p. 966, 1877, p. 997, and 1878, p. 960, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1875, 1876, 1877, and 1878). 17 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1881, p. 1111, and 1882, p. 271, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1881 and 1882) U.S. census, Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky, population schedule, E.D. 40a, Sheet 34B (penned), line 50, Annie Veltman, NARA microfilm publication T9, roll Death record, Anna Feldmann, Corpus Christi Church, Newport, Kentucky, 31 January 1905, microfilm record, Kenton County Public Library, Covington, Kentucky. 20 Caron s Directory of the City of Louisville for 1885, p. 771, and for 1886, p. 985, (Louisville, C. 5 23 24 about 1900, Ernst was living at 917 Isabella Street in Newport. The purchase of this property, for $625, apparently took place in 1884, so Ernst probably had been living there since that time, and was not in Louisville. 25 Ernst and Anna apparently had a late-in-life child. The 1900 census lists a daughter named Eva, born in May 1891 in Kentucky. 26 No other mention of this child has been found. In that census Anna reported that she had had three children, two of whom were living. Christian and Lena had nine children, all born in Newport, but four of them died in early childhood. All but the oldest died in Newport: Mary Joanne, born 21 January 1872, 27 worked as a tailoress. On 30 December 1897 in Cincinnati she married Arthur Howland, who had been born 2 November in the Arizona Territory. 29 Their daughter, Vivian Maria, was born in Cincinnati 19 January However, their marriage did not last. On 16 May 1921, in Cincinnati, she married an electrician, William H. Yeary, born in Cincinnati 23 December The 33-year-old William was considerably younger than Mary, but she may have compensated by listing her age as 37 on the marriage license instead of 49. She died of breast cancer in Cincinnati 26 May 22 Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1888, p. 1357, 1889, p. 1374, 1890, p. 1370, and 1891, p. 1422, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1888, 1889, 1890, and 1891). 23 Williams Covington and Newport Directory, 1890, p. 346, 1892, p. 363, 1894, p. 378, 1895, p. 366, 1897, p. 364, and , p. 390 (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1890, 1892, 1894, 1895, 1897, and 1900) U.S. census, Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky, population schedule, E.D. 26, Sheet 2A (penned), line 29, Ernst Veldman, NARA microfilm publication T623, roll Newport, Real Estate Transfers, Cincinnati Enquirer, 2 May 1884, U.S. census, Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky, population schedule, E.D. 26, Sheet 2A (penned), line 31, Eva Veldman, NARA microfilm publication T623, roll Baptismal record, Maria Joann Veldmann, Corpus Christi Church, Newport, Kentucky, 21 January 1872, microfilm 28 World War I Draft Registration Card #3176, Arthur Judson Howland. 29 Birth record, Viva Mary Howland, 19 January 1898, Blegen Library, Archives and Rare Books, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio. Anna Barbara, born 12 January 1874, was apparently named after Ernst s wife, who served as the godmother at her namesake s baptism. 34 The younger Anna worked as a tailoress at least from 1892 to On 10 June 1897, she married Frederick Kaufman, 36 a shoemaker born in Newport in June 1876 of German parents. 37 They had at least four children, all born in Kentucky: Edward, born December 1897; 38 Elsie, born December 1899; 39 George, born in 1902 and died in Covington 28 August 1954; 40 and Marcella, born about Anna died 1 January Ohio Death Certificate #29269, Mary Yeary, 26 May Hamilton County, Ohio, marriage record #210, Edward Mitchel Partusch and Vivian Maria Howland, 27 November Baptismal record, Anna Barbara Veldman, Corpus Christi Church, Newport, Kentucky, 12 January 1874, microfilm 35 Williams Covington and Newport Directory, 1892, p. 363, 1894, p. 378, 1895, p. 366, and 1897, p. 364, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1892, 1894, 1895, and 1897), Kenton County Public Library, Covington, Kentucky. 9 February 1911, died in May 1993; 67 and Marie, born July 30, 1913, 68 married Howard Lacy Walton, died 2 December In the 1920 census, Carrie is listed with her three children, but without her husband, although she is listed as married, and living with sister Anna and family. 70 In the 1940 census she is listed as widowed. 71 Carrie died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Newport 13 April Ernest Henry, born 3 July 1883, was baptized 8 July with his Uncle Ernst as his godfather, 73 and died in Newport two days later on 10 July. 74 Magdalena Elisabeth was born 1 November 1886, 75 and died in Newport twelve days later on 13 November. 76 Christian s intent in moving to Kentucky may have been to live in a better place to raise children, but a comparison of his daughters marriage dates and the birth dates of their first children shows that he was not totally successful. Also the divorces of at least two of the daughters must have been traumatic in this Catholic family. 67 Social Security Administration. 10 In 1895 Christian was working at the Manss Shoe Manufacturing Company, located at 101 Pearl. This company was apparently doing well, as their 1895 directory entry included a telephone number. 77 By the late 1890s he continued to be listed in the Newport directories as a shoemaker, but was probably working out of his home at 322 Washington Avenue, if he was working at all. By 1900 he had moved to 124 E. 8 th Street. The census that year listed the aging Christian as a shoemaker, but not employed for the past 12 months. At age 71, he was likely retired. Ernst was less successful in earning a living in shoemaking, which had become more and more mechanized over the years. A nationwide depression from 1893 to 1897 resulted in an unemployment rate of 20%. 78 During this period, Ernst went to work as an engine cleaner for the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad (PCC&St.L), which would later become part of the Pennsylvania Railroad. 79 He seemed to still regard himself as a shoemaker and was so listed in several city directories. 80 In the 1900 census his occupation was listed as cutter shoe fcty, but also stated that he was not employed for 11 of the past 12 months. Meanwhile, Anna worked as a washwoman with no months not employed Williams Cincinnati Directory, June 1895, p and 1690, (Cincinnati, Williams and Co., 1895). 78 June Granatir Alexander, Daily Life in Immigrant America , (Chicago, Ivan R. 11 Chapter 11 FINAL DAYS ERNST AND CHRISTIAN Ernst s job with the railroad eventually led to his death. He had become hard of hearing, and on the evening of 18 July 1906, while walking along the tracks, he was struck and killed by a passenger train. 82 His death record says he was buried at Saint Bernard Cemetery, but this was probably meant to be Saint Mary Cemetery in the Cincinnati community of Saint Bernard. 83 His wife Anna died just seven months later, on 26 February 1907, of chronic bronchitis, and was buried at Saint Mary Cemetery in Cincinnati. 84 Her estate was valued at $ Christian s wife Lena had died a year earlier, on 23 February Her cause of death was listed as Bright s disease, a term formerly used for a form of kidney disease. She was buried at Saint Stephen Cemetery in Newport. 86 After her death, Christian continued to live with daughters Carrie and Minnie. 87 The oldest of the Veldman brothers was the last to depart this life. He died 21 May 1908 at the age of 79, and was buried at Saint Stephen Cemetery. Cause of death was listed as senility. 88 A local newspaper printed the following: Christopher Veldman, 79, one of the surviving members of the Volunteer Fire Department of Cincinnati, died yesterday at his home, Front and Saratoga sts., Newport. During the early 50s he became a member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Cincinnati, and for eight years he served with the company known as the Fire Fighters of the Fifth Ward. 82 Killed by a Train, Cincinnati Enquirer, 19 July 1906, Death record for Ernest Feldman, 18 July 1906, Blegen Library, Archives and Rare Books, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio. 84 Death record for Anna Veldmann, 26 February 1907, Blegen Library, Archives and Rare Books, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio. 85 News of the Courts, Probate Court Pickings, Cincinnati Enquirer, 7 March 1907, 11. 12 Veldman had been a resident of Newport for more than 25 years and was well known. He is survived by one son and two daughters. The funeral will take place Monday morning, with services in St. Stephen s Church. 89 Having spent his early years in the Netherlands, endured a long ocean crossing at age 17, and adapted to and prospered in a new country, Christian experienced many changes throughout his life. Although sister Johanna Bayens in Louisville would continue to live another 16 years, Christian s death concludes the story of the Dutch immigrant family in the Cincinnati area. The family s successes and failures, and those of their fellow immigrants, are what have made America what it is today. Their descendants can be proud. 89 Veteran Firefighter Is Dead; Christopher Veldman Succumbs to Old Age at His Home in Newport, Kentucky Post, 23 May 1908, p. 5. Actually four daughters were living then, and no son living at the time has been found.
