11 Background Information Green Roofs, also known as vegetated roofs or eco-roofs, are thin layers of living plants that are installed on conventional roofs. A green roof consists of growing medium and vegetation planted over a waterproofing membrane. First reference to man-made gardens above-grade found in ancient Mesopotamia. Sod roofs have been used for hundreds of years because of their insulation qualities. Green roofs offer many ecological and aesthetic benefits.
