HealthTeacher: Making Physical Activity a Priority (Grades 4-5) 1. HealthTeacher 1.1 Slide 1 To introduce students to the health lesson: Explain that it s important to make time to exercise every day. Physical activity has many benefits - makes your body strong, gives you energy, helps you think and can improve your mood.

1.2 Slide 2 To help students remember how much exercise they need: This interactive slide invites students to guess how many minutes of exercise they need. Ask a student to write a guess in the circle on the left. Tap the circle on the right to reveal the correct answer (60 minutes). 1.3 Slide 3

To activate learning through movement: This video will invite students to stand up and get some exercise advance to the next slide. 1.4 Slide 4 Use the pink arrow on the right/middle part of the screen to advance to the next slide.

1.5 Slide 5 To engage the students: This :20 second video shows silly toys talking about why they don t like to exercise. Press the play button to start the video playing, it can be paused by touching the video 1.6 Slide 6

To help students identify solutions: The next series of slides are in quiz format. Three common reasons why kids don t exercise are identified ( I don t have time, I d much rather watch TV or play video games, and I m so tired. ) After each reason is identified, students are asked to select solutions that help them overcome the problem. 1.7 Slide 7 To help students think about barriers to exercise: A common reason that students give for why they don t get enough physical activity.

1.8 Slide 8 Ask a student to tap an answer to select it. Tap an answer again to de-select it. Select check answers at the bottom to check the work. There s only one wrong answer: Stay up super late and exercise 1.9 Slide 9

To help students think about barriers to exercise: Another common reason that students give for why they don t get enough physical activity Slide 10 Ask a student to tap an answer to select it. Tap an answer again to de-select it. Select check answers at the bottom to check the work. There s only one wrong answer: Throw the TV out the window

1.11 Slide 11 To help students think about barriers to exercise: A common reason that students give for why they don t get enough physical activity Slide 12 Ask a student to tap an answer to select it.

Tap an answer again to de-select it. Select check answers at the bottom to check the work. There s only one wrong answer: Exercise in your sleep 1.13 Slide 13 To further the discussion: Following the same format, ask students to propose other barriers to exercise and potential solutions. Need ideas to facilitate the discussion? Download the Exercise Barriers/Solutions PDF under Teacher Resources.

1.14 Slide 14 To remind students why it s important to make time to exercise: Acknowledge that some of the barriers to exercise are legitimatebut that there are great benefits to overcoming the barriers to exercise. Ask a student to move the words stronger energy think and better mood into the right place in the sentence: Physical activity makes you stronger, gives you more energy, helps you think, and puts you in a better mood.

1.15 Slide 15 Use the pink arrow on the right/middle part of the screen to advance to the next slide Slide 16 To help students set a small health goal: Ask students to set a goal to pick at least one day this week to get 60 minutes of physical activity. To help reinforce the goal setting, have students turn to a

classmate and announce which day they will be completing the task. Remind students that physical activity can take many forms: You can play a sport or do it solo: take a walk, scooter around your driveway, shoot hoops, jump rope, ride your skate board or bicycle just get your body MOVING!
