3 INTRODUCTION This wrkshp is designed t shw yu hw t use Impatica t transfrm existing r newly develped Micrsft PwerPint presentatins fr delivery ver the Internet withut plug-ins and at lw bandwidth. This learning guide is intended t serve as a reference upn the cmpletin f the wrkshp. GOALS After cmpleting this wrkshp yu will: knw what Impatica des. be able t create a PwerPint presentatin with narratin. knw hw t use the Impatica fr PwerPint sftware. knw hw t add an impaticized PwerPint file t a WebCT class. WHAT IS IMPATICA FOR POWERPOINT? Impatica fr PwerPint is a sftware tl fr the PC and Mac that translates PwerPint files int a mre efficient file that can be streamed ver the Internet. The result is an HTML file and a cmpressed Impatica file (.imp) that is read by Impatica s Java player applet (.jar). It will cmpress text, graphics, audi, vide animatin, and interactivity. INSTALLATION: The University f Hawaii has a site license fr Impatica fr PwerPint fr use by UH faculty and staff nly. Impatica fr PwerPint is installed n the training cmputers and in the Instructinal Technlgy Lab in UCB 120. UNIT 1: SETTING UP AND CREATING A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION FOR WEB DELIVERY Befre yu can use Impatica fr PwerPint yu need t have a presentatin. It can be new r ne that yu ve already created. 4 CREATE A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION In the fllwing exercise, yu will be t creating a simple PwerPint presentatin. T create the presentatin, use the fllwing guidelines: The presentatin shuld cntain 5-7 slides. Use any tpic yu wish. If yu can t think f anything, here are sme ideas: 5 reasns fr taking yur class (marketing). 5 things peple shuld knw abut yu (bi). 5 reasns t graduate (clsing the gap). 5 ways t make an A in yur class (special interest). Add sme transitins and/r animatins. Use sme clipart When using graphics, make sure they are small and cmpressed. Acceptable graphic frmats: JPEG, GIF, PNG, WMF, EMF, TIF. EXERCISE - CREATE A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION 1. Open Micrsft PwerPint 2. Frm the Menu bar, select File, then New. The New Presentatin dialg bx appears. 3. Frm the Menu bar, select Frmat, then Slide Design. PwerPint s prefrmatted design templates appear n the right-hand side. 4. Chse a template supprted by Impatica fr PwerPint. D nt use the fllwing unsupprted templates: i) Capsules ii) Dad s Tie iii) Marble 5. Cmplete yur first slide and add subsequent slides by clicking the New Slide buttn n the frmatting tlbar, r frm the Menu bar, select Insert, then New Slide. 6. Save yur presentatin in the Impatica class flder n yur desktp, r t a desired lcatin. Fr this exercise, use yur last name in the file name (example: de.ppt). Page 4 f 12 As f 10/18/07

5 PREPARE NARRATION FOR POWERPOINT When adding narratin t yur presentatin, use the fllwing guidelines: Write a script befre recrding (in the recrding exercise yu can read the title f each slide). Be brief and t the pint. Narratin per slide shuld be n lnger than 1 minute and preferably less than 30 secnds. Identify yurself r the authr f the presentatin. EXERCISE 1 ADJUST THE AUDIO SETTINGS IN POWERPOINT 1. Frm the Slide Shw menu, select Recrd Narratin. The Recrd Narratin dialg bx will appear. Set Micrphne Level Change Quality 2. Click the Set Micrphne Level buttn. The micrphne check dialg bx appears. 3. Check yur micrphne s recrding level by fllwing the directins. 4. When dne, click the OK buttn. The Recrd Narratin dialg bx will reappear. Page 5 f 12 As f 10/18/07

6 5. Click the Change Quality buttn. The Sund Selectin dialg bx appears. 6. Make the fllwing Impatica recmmended selectins by using drp dwn lists: Frmat: PCM. Attributes: 8,000Hz, 16 Bit, Mn. 7. Click the Save As buttn. The Save As dialg bx appears. 8. In the Save this frmat as field, type Impatica. This step will save the recmmended selectins fr the next time yu use Impatica. 9. Click the OK buttn. The Sund Selectin dialg bx reappears. 10. Click the OK buttn. The Recrd Narratin dialg bx will reappear. EXERCISE 2 RECORD NARRATION AND PLAY THE PRESENTATION Befre starting this exercise, have yur script and micrphne ready! 1. T begin recrding, click the OK buttn in the Recrd Narratin dialg bx. The presentatin will g t full screen. 2. T advance thrugh the slides, use the Page Dwn key n yur keybard r click yur left muse buttn. 3. At the end f yur last slide, click yur left muse buttn t exit. This actin will stp recrding yur narratin. 4. Click Yes r N t save yur narratin. 5. Save the presentatin. 6. Play the presentatin. If yu have made mistakes yu can: Re-recrd the entire narratin. 7 UNIT 2: USING IMPATICA FOR POWERPOINT Nw that the narrated PwerPint file is cmplete, it s time t learn hw t translate it int a cmpressed and web-friendly frmat. SELECT SOURCE FILES FOR TRANSLATION 1. Open Impatica fr PwerPint. The Impatica fr PwerPint Surce Files dialg bx will appear. Surce PwerPint Files field Impatica Settings Tabs Impaticize buttn 2. Yu can add yur PwerPint file ne f tw ways: Drag yur PwerPint file int the Surce PwerPint Files field. Or Click the Add buttn, find and select yur PwerPint file, then click the Open buttn. 8 CHOOSE IMPATICIZING SETTINGS There are a number f translatin settings yu can select; these settings are gruped and presented n three tabs: Slide Shw Output Files and Media EXERCISE 1 SLIDE SHOW TAB 1. In the Playback Cntrls sectin: Click the Include playback cntrls checkbx if yu want Impatica t add VCR-like buttns that allws the user t cntrl navigatin. i) Playback cntrls are rewind, previus, pause/play buttns, and next. 2. In the Wait fr Sund sectin (facilitates synchrnizatins f narratin): Check the At end f animatin checkbx. Check the At end f slide checkbx. 3. In the Animatin Playback sectin check the PwerPint 2002 (XP) and 2003 checkbx. 4. Check the Make all animatins autmatic checkbx. All animatins will ccur autmatically, withut waiting fr a muse click 5. Click the Make hyperlinks pen new windw checkbx All hyperlinks will pen in a new brwser windw. Page 8 f 12 As f 10/18/07

9 EXERCISE 2 OUTPUT FILES TAB 1. Click n the Output Files tab. 2. In the Save Lcatin field, make sure the Impatica class flder is shwn, r click Brwse t find an alternate saving lcatin. 3. In the Generated Supprt Files field. Click the HTML file checkbx, if necessary. This will create an HTML file t be used t preview the Impaticized file n the hard drive 4. If mre than ne PwerPint surce file is added, click the Apply t All buttn. 5. Click the Save as Default buttn t save yur settings fr next time. EXERCISE 3 MEDIA TAB 1. 1) Click n the Media tab. 2. In the JPEG Images sectin, uncheck the Always recmpress bx. Recmpressing decreases file size, but als degrades the quality f the image. 3. Skip the Vide sectin as it is nt cvered in this class. Refer t pages 68 t 72 in the Impatica fr PwerPint User s Manual, versin Check the Use cmpact sund checkbx. This selectin cnverts sund bjects t Impatica s cmpact sund frmat which is designed fr streaming sund ver the Internet. If unchecked, the sund will be higher quality, but the file will be large. Nte: Leave unchecked if yu intend t press yur file t CD. Page 9 f 12 As f 10/18/07

10 CREATE THE IMPATICIZED FILES (-IMP.HTML, -IMP.JAR, & IMPLAYER302.JAR) After the surce files have been selected and the impaticizing settings chsen, the final step is t impaticize and then preview the file. EXERCISE 1 IMPATICIZE AND PREVIEW A FILE 1. Click the Impaticize buttn in the lwer right hand crner t begin the prcess The Cnversin Prgress dialg bx appears. The Skip buttn and Skip Remaining buttn interrupts the translatin. 2. Upn cmpletin f the translatin prcess, click the Preview buttn. Internet Explrer will pen and the impaticized file will play Nte: As with all media intended fr the Internet, be sure t test yur files in different brwsers t ensure that yur students will nt have any prblems. If file des nt wrk as expected r desired, click the Delete File buttn and reimpaticize the file. 3. Click the Dne buttn. 4. Clse Impatica fr PwerPint. 11 UNIT 3: ADDING AN IMPATICIZED POWERPOINT FILE TO A WEBCT CLASS The impaticized PwerPint file is nw ready fr use in yur WebCT class. In the fllwing exercises the impaticized PwerPint files will be upladed t a WebCT class and added as a Single Page. EXERCISE 1 UPLOAD THE IMPATICIZED FILES INTO WEBCT 1. Open Internet Explrer. 2. Lg in t WebCT and navigate t the apprpriate curse. 3. Using the Navigatin Bar, click n Manage Files. The Manage Files screen appears. 4. Click n Uplad buttn frm the Optins: Files menu n the right-hand side f the screen. 5. Click the Brwse buttn. 6. Navigate t the Impatica files n the cmputer s hard drive. 7. Duble-click n the imp.jar file. The file s infrmatin is entered int the Filename field. 8. Click the Uplad buttn. 9. Repeat steps 4-8 t uplad the -Vide.jar and -imp.html files. Imprtant Nte: Fr the impaticized file t wrk prperly, all three files need t be placed tgether within the My-Files area. EXERCISE 2 ADD THE IMPATICIZED POWERPOINT FILE AS A SINGLE PAGE 1. Using the Curse Menu r Breadcrumbs, click n Hmepage The Hmepage screen appears 2. Click n Add page r tl frm the Optins: Links menu n the right-hand side f the screen. The Add Page r Tl screen will appear. 3. In the Pages clumn, click n Single Page. The Add Single Page screen will appear. Page 11 f 12 As f 10/18/07

12 4. Enter a title fr the Single Page that will be the link t the impaticized file. 5. In the Page Filename sectin (step 2) click the Brwse buttn. lcate and click n the -imp.html file. click the Add Selected buttn t return t the Add Single Page screen. 6. In the link sectin (step 3) chse where the link will appear and make ther selectins as desired. 7. Click the Add buttn 8. Click n the Single Page icn t view yur impaticized PwerPint file. 9.
