2 The Wiz Synopsis The Wiz is a funky, modern update of The Wizard of Oz. The music is more upbeat with a mix of rock, pop and jazz sensibilities. A young girl named Dorothy is wisked away from her Aunt in Kansas by a large storm, and set down in the land of Oz. After being inspected by Munchkins, she is sent on her way to see The Wiz by the Good Witch of the North, with a pair of ruby shoes. She follows the Yellow Brick Road, collecting a scarecrow with no brain, a tinman with no heart, and a lion with no courage, all of whom want to see the Wiz. Surviving fights against Kalidah people, and nearly losing the lion in the Poppy field, they arrive at the Emerald City. The quartet are told to wear emerald glasses, and are laughed at by the Citizens, who, only after seeing Dorothy s shoes, send them to the Wiz. All four plead their cases to the mighty Wiz, and he agrees to help them, only if they will dispose of the Wicked Witch of the West. The companions reluctantly go to Evillene s castle, where she has enslaved the Winkie people. They are caught by Evillene s Winged Monkeys and while Scarecrow and Tinman are being horribly tortured, Lion and Dorothy are forced to do chores around the castle. After Evillene tortures Lion to get Dorothy to give her the ruby shoes, Dorothy becomes angry and throws a bucket of water over the Witch, melting her. The Winkies rejoice in their freedom, helping the friends return to see the Wiz. The four find the Wiz to be a fraud, and after telling them how he became to be ruler of Oz, admits being false to his people. He shows Tinman, Scarecrow, and Lion that they have already achieved what they were looking for, and as Dorothy is losing all hope, Addaperle arrives, telling Dorothy of Glinda. Glinda shows Dorothy the magic in the shoes, and, waving her friends goodbye, Dorothy clicks her heels together three times, returning home

Attendance and Grade Policy: Attendance is very important to the rehearsals for any show. PLEASE UNDERSTAND IF YOUR STUDENT IS CAST THIS WILL BE A HUGE TIME COMMITMENT. Every student is expected to be at all rehearsals. If they are unable to make a rehearsal, we ask that you let us know at least one week in advance. We do understand that a child can become ill or there are family emergencies that happen and these will be excused. But please note that attendance is mandatory. Rehearsals will take place 4 days a week Mon- Thursday from 3-5 pm Because of the time, we will put together a list of the students information for the parents so that you can work with other parents to set up car pools to lessen the burden on you. Also, students may not miss any rehearsals or any shows during the last 2 weeks of production (May 7-18). As with any activities students must remain academically eligible. If on occasion they need to meet with a teacher they will be allowed to do so, but if they are spending a huge chunk of time after school with teachers, their involvement may be re-evaluated by the production staff. INFORMATION 1. Program Advertisements cast members are expected to sell a minimum of $50 worth of program advertisements to businesses and/or family members. Ads and money are due no later than MAY 1, The cast member who sells the most program ads will be awarded a prize. More information on ads (sizes, prices etc ) will be sent home at a later date. 2. Costumes Parkland will try to provide as much of the costume pieces as necessary. Your student may be asked to provide some pieces, but it will not be much. 3. Family Involvement Program (FIP) If your student is cast, we need YOUR help and commitment to insure the best experience possible for everyone involved. There is a tremendous amount of planning and preparation that must be done to make this a success. We will depend a great deal on adult involvement to insure the best performances. We will need help with costumes, hair, makeup, set building and painting, ushers for the each evenings performance as well as ticket sales coordinator and maybe a concessions stand coordinator.

6 Schedules Rehearsals: Rehearsals will be held at Parkland after school. Rehearsals will begin Monday January 23 with a whole cast read through from 3-5. We are working on logistics with administration on this and will give you more details as they become available. Cast Party TBA Set Strike This is the time that we take apart the set. Mandatory will happen on a date to be announced after the show. Photos - Parkland will try to have someone take still photos of the cast and various scenes of the show.
