LeafletProprio ANG /02/09 :9 Page 2 Every day, the Virbac Vet Complex range of foods provides your dog with carefully selected ingredients that perfectly suit his needs. VIRBAC VET COMPLEX : multi-component foods Original manufacturing process : incorporating fats and vitamins using a unique cold process ensures optimal nutritional quality of the foods. High digestibility : the quality of the raw materials used ensures excellent digestive tolerance and firm stools of small size. Guaranteed palatability : the exclusive texture of Virbac Vet Complex foods satisfies even the most particular appetites. 2
LeafletProprio ANG /02/09 :9 Page 4 HOW MUCH FOOD SHOULD YOU GIVE YOUR DOG? For detailed guidelines, use the feeding table on pages & 2. How to use the table : Simply look at the column that corresponds to the age of your pet then scroll down until you come to its weight (in kilos). You then have access to the quantity (in grams) and to the type of food your dog must have each day (pink for baby dog ; yellow for junior dog ; blue for adult dog, adult dog with salmon or adult dog light ; green for senior dog). Diet transition : To ease transition, gradually introduce the new food into the former one over a 6 days period. First food 2 days Let's take an example : Your puppy is 7 old and weighs 2 kilos. You will therefore give him 4 grams of baby dog per day divided into meals. Keeping on this line and moving to the right, you will calculate that : - at 2, your dog will weigh approximately kg. - he will reach adulthood at 6 and will weigh approximately kg. 0% 7% % 2 days 2 days Second food % % % 7% 0% 4
LeafletProprio ANG /02/09 :9 Page 6 Contents Food Usage Page baby dog Puppy at beginning of growth "Puppies have intense needs for balanced growth, particularly in terms of energy, proteins and minerals. Their digestive system is delicate and their immune system immature." junior dog Young dog at end of growth "After the growth peak, a young dog's needs diminish. His diet must take this into account to avoid excessive weight gain and joint disorders. The dog's education continues and its temperament becomes established." adult dog & adult dog with salmon Adult dog "Diet must help the adult dog remain in perfect health." 2 adult dog light Adult dog with low calorific needs "In dogs predisposed to being overweight, it is appropriate to reduce calorie intake and favour muscle mass." 4 senior dog Mature dog "In mature dogs, the oxidative processes responsible for ageing intensify. Key functions must be protected. Reduced activity causes muscles to waste." 6
LeafletProprio ANG /02/09 :9 Page Puppy Available in bags of :. kg kg 7. kg. kg Who is he? The puppy is in a phase of intense and very rapid growth. The duration of this period depends on breed. The puppy is delicate : Immature digestive system : the puppy has just changed from a milk diet to a varied solid diet. Bacterial flora is gradually developing in the gut. Starch (cereals) is hard to digest. Stress (due to change of home and owner, discovering the outside world, education, etc) can provoke digestive disorders (with sickness or diarrhoea for example). SMALL BREED Lap-dog Toy Poodle Scottish Terrier Dachshund Yorkshire from weaning to MEDIUM Cocker Dalmatian Spaniel Husky Pyrenean Shepherd... from weaning to 6 Immature immune system : immune protection inherited from the mother progressively disappears and the puppy quickly has to acquire its own defences. This is the time for vaccinations. LARGE German shepherd Briard Labrador Rottweiler Setter... from weaning to 7 GIANT Great Dane Neapolitan Mastiff Saint Bernard Newfoundland from weaning to What are his needs? A puppy has intense needs for balanced growth : Proteins and minerals (calcium and phosphorus in particular) contribute to the correct development of bones, adult teeth and muscle. Essential fatty acids have several important functions including : development of the brain and nervous system, the immune system, the skin and coat, etc. Because the puppy's stomach is still small, food must be concentrated and rich in energy (fats). Starch content must be moderate. Food : Baby dog : its daily ration must be divided into meals. HEALTH BENEFITS Stimulated digestion : Lactobacilli help build up balanced and solid intestinal flora while clay protects digestive mucosa and thus help protect against digestive disorders. Reinforced immunity : Betaglucans (yeast extracts) stimulate the development of the body s immunity and natural defences ; they increase vaccine response and resistance to diseases. Brain development : vital to the development of brain, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid from the family of omega essential fatty acids) helps the puppy's socialisation. baby dog
LeafletProprio ANG /02/09 :9 Page Junior dog Available in bags of :. kg kg 7. kg. kg Who is he? The rapid growth phase is over. The dog's skeleton is almost complete. Muscles need to develop further. It will take a few more before the definitive adult silhouette is achieved. The duration of this period varies according to breed. What are his needs? To build his muscles, a young dog needs a food that is rich in proteins. Calorie-content must be limited to avoid excess weight gain and joint disorders. A generous contribution of essential fatty acids helps develop healthy skin and a silky coat as well as contributing to the formation of a strong immune system that will be maintained by annual vaccinations. Food : Junior dog : Gradually, the young dog will go from to 2 meals a day. junior dog SMALL BREED Lap-dog Toy Poodle Scottish Terrier Dachshund Yorkshire between and 2 MEDIUM Cocker Dalmatian Spaniel Husky Pyrenean Shepherd... between 6 and 4 LARGE German shepherd Briard Labrador Rottweiler Setter... between 7 and 6 GIANT Great Dane Neapolitan Mastiff Saint Bernard Newfoundland between and HEALTH BENEFITS Digestive Safety : Clay protects digestive mucosa and helps protect against digestive disorders. Reinforced immunity : Betaglucans (yeast extracts) stimulate the development of the body's immunity and natural defences ; they increase vaccine response and resistance to diseases. Facilitated learning : Passionflower and valerian are plants that combat stress. They help the young dog to be adaptable, making training and learning easier.
LeafletProprio ANG /02/09 :9 Page 2 Adult dog Available in bags of :. kg (adult dog only) kg 7. kg. kg kg (adult dog only) 2 Who is he? Any adult dog in good health with a normal physical activity : walks, outdoor lifestyle, games, etc. SMALL BREED Lap-dog Toy Poodle Scottish Terrier Dachshund Yorkshire from 2 to 9 years MEDIUM Cocker Dalmatian Spaniel Husky Pyrenean Shepherd... from 4 to years LARGE German shepherd Briard Labrador Rottweiler Setter... from 6 to 7 years GIANT Great Dane Neapolitan Mastiff Saint Bernard Newfoundland from to 6 years What are his needs? His protein needs are less important than in growing dogs. Now, the dog is essentially a carnivore (meat eater) : the proportion of protein in his diet must remain high. Although starch can now be properly digested, it is better to give the dog a food containing only a moderate amount of starch. Calories are supplied by fats : unlike man, a dog digests fats very well. They are also the primary palatability factor. Food : Adult dog and adult dog with salmon : his ration has to be divided into 2 daily meals. HEALTH BENEFITS Healthy skin and shiny coat : essential fatty acids are key factors in skin integrity. They guarantee skin and coat looks and quality and reduce the risk of allergies. Joint mobility : Chondroitin sulphate and chitosan help preserve cartilage in the joints. Urinary health : methionine contributes to the normal acidification of urine and reduces the risk of disorders of the lower urinary tract. adult dog - adult dog with salmon
LeafletProprio ANG /02/09 :9 Page 4 Adult dog predisposed to becoming overweight Available in bags of :. kg kg 7. kg. kg Who is he? A dog whose physical activity is reduced : lives in an apartment, usually on a lead when out for a walk. Neutered dogs or bitches Dogs with a tendency to overweight (Labrador, Beagle, Cocker ). Formerly obese dogs that followed a slimming programme and whose weight needs to be stabilized. What are his needs? His calorie needs are reduced by about %. Fats, the main source of calories, must be reduced without adversely affecting essential fatty acid content. The dog is a carnivore : protein content must remain high. High fibre content satisfies his appetite, which has often increased. Food : Adult dog light : his ration has to be divided into 2 daily meals. adult dog light 4 SMALL BREED Lap-dog Toy Poodle Scottish Terrier Dachshund Yorkshire from 2 to 9 years MEDIUM Cocker Dalmatian Spaniel Husky Pyrenean Shepherd from 4 to years LARGE German shepherd Briard Labrador Rottweiler Setter... from 6 to 7 years GIANT Great Dane Neapolitan Mastiff Saint Bernard Newfoundland from to 6 years HEALTH BENEFITS and glucose regulation : L-carnitine reduces deposits of fatty tissue and thus helps prevent excess weight. An appropriate combination of minerals (chrome, zinc, magnesium) and vitamins (biotin) helps regulate glucose in the blood and reduces the risk of insulin resistance, often associated with excess weight. Joint mobility : Chondroitin sulphate and chitosan help maintain the resistance and elasticity of articular cartilage that is put under extra strain by excess weight. Healthy skin and shiny coat : essential fatty acids are key factors in skin integrity. They guarantee skin and coat looks and quality and reduce the risk of allergies.
LeafletProprio ANG /02/09 :9 Page 6 Breeding bitch Available in bags of :. kg kg 7. kg. kg Who is she? The gestating (pregnant) bitch : gestation lasts an average of two. The lactating bitch : a bitch suckles her puppies for approximately 6 weeks. What are her needs? A bitch's nutritional needs increase progressively during gestation as the feotuses grow. Moreover, as the uterus (womb) grows, the capacity for food intake is reduced. Lactation means that a bitch expends even more energy than during gestation. Her needs triple in relation to everyday needs. She needs a food rich in calories (hence in fats), in proteins and in minerals to meet the development needs of the feotuses and then of the newborn puppies. Food : Baby dog. Start making the switch from the previous food as soon as the bitch comes on heat (use the method described on pages 4 and ). During gestation, the daily ration is divided into or 2 meals. During the suckling phase, the food can be left on free access. NB : giving the same food to the mother and her puppies simplifies the weaning period. HEALTH BENEFITS Stimulated digestion : Lactobacilli help build up balanced and solid intestinal flora while clay helps protect the intestinal lining. Digestive disorders, often observed during the gestation period, are reduced. Reinforced immunity : Betaglucans, yeast extracts, stimulate immunity. They contribute to increase the bitch's resistance to diseases and to constitute rich colostrum for the newborn puppies. Brain development : DHA (docosahexaenoic acid from the family of omega essential fatty acids) contributes to brain development in feotuses and newborn puppies and helps promote the development of balanced behaviour in the future. (For breeding bitch) baby dog 6
LeafletProprio ANG /02/09 :9 Page Senior dog Available in bags of :. kg kg 7. kg. kg Who is he? Ageing is unavoidable. It gradually affects the entire body and translates into a decline in key functions (immune system, kidneys, heart, digestion, brain, etc). Life can become more of a struggle. A senior dog starts to become less active. SMALL BREED Bichon Toy Poodle Scottish Terrier Dachshund Yorkshire from 9 years What are his needs? To avoid the excess weight associated with reduced physical activity, the senior dog needs a food with less calories. Fat content must therefore be reduced, but sufficient essential fatty acids must be maintained as they are needed for healthy skin and coat, and play a role in the immune system. MEDIUM Cocker Dalmatian Spaniel Husky Pyrenean Shepherd from years LARGE German shepherd Briard Labrador Rottweiler Setter... from 7 years GIANT Great Dane Neapolitan Mastiff Saint Bernard Newfoundland from 6 years Protein content must be maintained to preserve muscle mass. Proteins must be of a high quality so as not to overload kidneys. Fibre content stimulates intestinal transit and contributes to the balanced development of digestive flora in the gut. Natural antioxidants (vitamin E, selenium, tomato lycopene) reduce cell ageing processes. Food : Senior dog. Divide the recommended daily quantity into 2 meals. HEALTH BENEFITS Facilitated mobility : A chondroprotective complex helps reduce the development of osteoarthritis and contributes to maintaining sufficient activity levels for pleasant walks and playful times (clinical proof). Alertness : The natural antioxidants in Ginkgo biloba help delay or reduce the first signs of brain ageing. Vision support : A combination of amino-acids (cystine, glycine, glutamic acid) and vitamins (vitamin A, inositol) reduces ageing in the lens to maintain good sight. senior dog
