2 You know the scenario you have carefully selected a gorgeous coordinating set of furniture and await its arrival with excitement. The day of delivery arrives, and then to your dismay, you discover that it doesn t fit inside the house. Such an anti-climax! So we at Moocasa thought we would take put together some top tips to help minimise the disappointment of returned items. It s all in the measuring. So here goes. Here's an interesting fact - the main reason that furniture is returned is because it does not fit. The single biggest problem is that large items (double wardrobes are the main culprit) quite often do not fit up staircases with low ceilings and/or tight turns. So before placing an order, we highly recommend that all measurements have been double-checked to be certain the furniture will fit (there are detailed dimensions on every Product Detail page). Measuring up can be a bit tricky, so here is a detailed guide so that you can prepare and ensure everything is a perfect fit on the day! Tip #1 - Can Our Lorry Access Your Property? Firstly, make sure that a 7.5 tonne lorry can access your property. So if there are any particularly narrow lanes, low bridges or small gateways, you will need to highlight this before the order is placed to ensure that the delivery is possible. The rule of thumb is if a standard sized dust bin lorry can get to the property then so can we. But for reference, a 7.5 tonne lorry looks like this: Tip #2 - Make Sure We Can Get Your Furniture to Your Front Door Please note that in order to offer Free Delivery, we generally operate a one-man delivery service. So please ensure that assistance is available for the delivery driver if you have ordered a large object or have access issues, such as external stairs to a flat. A charge will be levied in the event the delivery driver is unable to deliver due to lack of assistance. We are only insured for delivery to downstairs room of choice, but if it is safe to do so our friendly driver will assist in getting the item upstairs. NOTE: For flats or apartment buildings, it is important to measure the elevator interior height, elevator opening and opposite wall distance. Page 2

3 Tip #3 - Can Your Furniture Get to Your Room of Choice? Next up, plan the route the furniture will take to end up in its desired room and then... measure, measure and measure again! The diagram below shows some of the key measurements that may be needed to ensure a clear passage for those bulkier items. 1. Exterior / Front doorway height 2. Exterior / Front doorway width and clearance to opposite wall 3. Staircase width 4. Staircase corner width and (if your stairs have a bend) clearance to opposite wall upstairs 5. Low-hanging light fixtures 6. Interior doorway width and clearance to opposite wall 7. Interior doorway height 8. Stairwell overhang / ceiling height Also, on the day of delivery, it pays to make sure that the access ways have been cleared of all possible obstructions such as hall tables, fire extinguishers and so on. 4 Tip #4 Can You Get Your Sofa In? The most common tight spots are DOORS, HALLS, and STAIRS when sofas are being delivered because it is difficult to tell which dimensions you should be measuring on a sofa. These spots can make it impossible to reach the desired room. As an example, consider a spiral staircase with a small landing. Would you want to navigate a large sofa through this obstacle course? Here are a few simple pointers for measuring access for sofas: Measure the Height (A) and Width (B) of all Entrances and Hallways. Sofa Width (A) must be less than Entry Height (A), Diagonal Depth (B) must be less then Entry Width (B) Page 4

5 Tip #5 Making Sure Your Furniture Fits in the Room of Choice Another common problem is that the furniture doesn't fit in the space in the room it was intended for. This could be a room that is too small, a ceiling too low, or an alcove that is too narrow - you get the picture. There are three ways to get round this problem, and the first is to measure the space and try and envisage the furniture in situ. But that isn't much fun, so we have come up with two alternative ways of figuring out whether the furniture is the perfect size. Create your own FREE Floor Plan! However, if time is of the essence, a top-tip is to cut out a cardboard (or newspaper) template in the size of the new furniture. Alternatively, masking tape can be used to mark off the area on your floor and help envision how it will fit in the room. So simple, yet so effective. Tip #6 - Measuring TV Sizes if You are Buying a TV Unit Television manufacturers measure televisions diagonally (C). So when it says that your television is 48 inches, that is the size of the screen from corner to corner. Page 5

6 That 48 inches does not include the casing that the screen is enclosed in. The edges of the television could give you an extra 6 inches or more. So the 48 inch TV may not fit on a 48 inch TV unit without overhang. To make sure the television will fit in the desired space, measure from the outside edges Width (A) and Height (B). That would give you the exact size you would need to comfortably fit your TV either on top of, or inside your TV Unit. Tip #7 That s it!
