Heart to Heart It s always such a happy time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus. We may sing to celebrate. We may send cards to celebrate. We may enjoy special times with family and friends. But one of the best ways to celebrate the birth of Jesus is what you re already doing teaching young hearts about His birth. What a privilege! God loved us so much He sent Jesus as a baby. Joseph and Mary no doubt loved Jesus very much. Jesus loved us so much He died on the cross for us. You love Jesus so much that you give of your time to help His little ones learn about His love. What a beautiful circle of love! Be happy and rejoice. There is a lot to celebrate! 2 Activity Time (25 30 minutes) Life Focus help children explore the theme, Joseph and Mary loved Jesus. Welcome Welcome each child by name. Do check-in procedures you follow (name and security tags, etc.). Play soft music in the background (CD Tracks 8 and 9). Lead each child to an activity. Bible Words Jesus was born (Matthew 2:1). Activities for the Unit Use these activities anytime during your session. Children will enjoy doing them each week. Poster: Before class, display the Unit 1 Nativity poster in your room. Ask children to point to Joseph and Mary. Say, Joseph and Mary knew that Jesus was a special baby. Books and puzzles: Use the Jesus Was a Special Baby book and other books and puzzles that show pictures of Jesus birth. Look at books with interested children and help children do puzzles. Talk about Jesus being a special baby. Jesus Christ Was Born song: Before class, display the Unit 1 song poster in your room. Play Jesus Christ Was Born from the CD. Sing with individual children or small groups. Encourage children to do the suggested actions. Jesus Was Born Before class, press out the stars and mangers. Punch a hole in each figure. Tie with yarn and hang them from the ceiling in your room. Or hang them from a dowel rod to hold over the children s heads. Leave the figures up during Unit 1. Encourage children to look at the mangers and stars and clap their hands. They may also want to jump to try to reach them. Or you can hold children up to the figures so they can touch them. Sing the following song to the tune of London Bridge. Encourage verbal children to sing with you. Jesus was a special baby, special baby, special baby. Jesus was a special baby. Jesus was born. The star shone so very bright, very bright, very bright. The star shone so very bright. Jesus was born. 1s will clap their hands, jump, and listen to the song. 2s will do the above and sing some of the words. Taking Care of Baby Encourage the children to care for the baby dolls by feeding, rocking, and dressing them. Then invite the children to put the dolls in a bed to go to sleep. You may want to play the baby sounds from the CD while children play. Say, Joseph and Mary had a baby. His name was Jesus. Joseph and Mary took care of baby Jesus. They wrapped Him in a blanket and put Him in a bed. Joseph and Mary knew that Jesus was born! Encourage verbal children to say the Bible Words with you. 1s will play with the dolls and put them to bed. 2s will do the above and say the Bible Words. 4 Discovery Time (15 20 minutes) Life Focus help children continue exploring the theme, Joseph and Mary loved Jesus. Rocking Baby Sit facing a child. Take his hands and gently tug him back and forth in a rocking motion. Sing this song to the tune of This Is the Way and encourage verbal children to sing with you: This is the way we rock the baby, rock the baby, rock the baby. This is the way we rock the baby, rocking back and forth. Play the baby sounds from the CD. What is that? Encourage verbal children to respond. That s a baby! Show the children how to rock a baby. Then give the children the baby dolls and encourage them to rock the dolls. Say, You are rocking the baby. Joseph and Mary rocked baby Jesus. They took care of baby Jesus. Mary and Joseph knew that 1s will enjoy rocking with you and rocking the doll. 2s will do the above and may sing some of the song. Get Ready for Baby Before class, fill a diaper bag with baby care items. Place the diaper bag beside an empty container. Invite the children to empty the diaper bag and show them how to put the items in the empty container. Invite verbal children to name the items, or you can name them. Then ask verbal children, What do you do with a bottle? What do you do with a toy? Encourage them to respond. Joseph and Mary had to get ready for baby Jesus. Joseph and Mary wanted to take good care of baby Jesus. Joseph and Mary knew that Encourage children to place the items back in the bag as you say, Let s get ready for baby Jesus. 1s will enjoy emptying the bag and may put items back. 2s will do the above, name the items, and respond to questions. Joseph and Mary Before class, make copies of page 97 and cut fabric into small pieces. Give each child a copy of page 97. Guide the children to scribble-color the figures of Joseph and Mary. As children color, say, Here are Joseph and Mary. They will soon have a baby. His name will be Jesus. Joseph and Mary knew that Coat the figures with glue. Show children how to press on the fabric pieces. When children are done, ask them to point to Joseph. Ask, Who is that? Encourage verbal children to respond. Ask children to point to Mary. Ask, Who is that? Encourage verbal children to respond. 1s will scribble-color, press on fabric pieces, and point to Joseph and Mary. 2s will do the above and name Joseph and Mary. Saying Good-bye For children who are leaving, give parents craft activities and copies of Family Together Time Issue 1 from the CD. Tell parents something their children enjoyed. Go to individual children with Teddy or to small groups of children. Hi! My name is Teddy. I m so happy to see you today. I have happy news to tell you. Jesus was born! Put a small baby doll in Teddy s arms. I m rocking a baby. Joseph and Mary rocked baby Jesus in their arms. They loved baby Jesus. Have Teddy give each child a hug. Joseph and Mary hugged baby Jesus. Joseph and Mary knew that Jesus was a special baby. Sweet Dreams Put several pillows in a basket or tub. Encourage children to take the pillows out of the basket. Help children arrange the pillows on the floor to make a bed. We re making a bed. Joseph and Mary made a bed for baby Jesus. Joseph and Mary knew that Invite the children to lie down on the pillows. Cover children with blankets and encourage them to lie still for a few moments while you play quiet music. Joseph and Mary loved baby Jesus. When rest time is over, clap your hands and say, Jesus was born! Encourage verbal children to say the Bible Words with you. A Manger Filled with Hay Before class, cut the paper tubes (one for each child) in half lengthwise and cut 2" strips of paper as hay. Set one half of each tube, open side down, on a table. Put a strip of glue on the tops. Guide children to put the second half, open side up, on top of the glue. Say, Joseph and Mary loved Jesus. They wanted him to have a nice bed to lie in. Put some glue in the open half of the paper tubes. Say, Let s make a nice bed for baby Jesus to lie in. Give the children some strips of paper and show them how to put the hay on the glue. Joseph and Mary knew that Joseph and Mary loved Jesus. Put the completed mangers in plastic bags to take home. 1s and 2s will help make a manger bed. Saying Good-bye Give parents copies of Family Together Time Issue 1 from the CD and craft activities their children may have done. Tell each child, Good-bye.
