10 Uralungal Labour Contract Society Ltd The birth was inevitable in the mid 1920s. Values of the Organization. The biggest labour co-operative societies in the world. It hardly gives any room for corruption or misappropriation of funds. Laborers gradually transformed themselves into owners. Vagbhatnanda strove for social transformation through his disciples, who were mostly daily wage laborers. Some of them lived in abject poverty and didn t even own a piece of land. The doctrines of Vagbhatananda inspired them to find new opportunities through the co-operative society. Adherence to fair trade practices, Quicker turnaround time, Labor strength, Economic stability, A huge resource of raw materials and machineries etc. 6/16/2015 Coop Research Seminar, Finland 10

15 Tribal Cooperatives in Island Ellen Hinengo The main export of the Nicobar Islands is copra. The Nicobari tribals who live on these islands are almost entirely dependent on copra exports for all their external needs. The Northern Group of islands in the Nicobars, mainly Car Nicobar, produces about 250 metric tonnes of copra per month; the Central Group ( Nancowry, Kamorta, Trinkat, Katchal) about the same before the tsunami. The trade used to be controlled by a single family in Port Blair; in the 1950s a tribal cooperative, Ellen Hinango Limited (EHL) was set up. 6/16/2015 Coop Research Seminar, Finland 15

16 Consumer Cooperatives- Public Distribution System The public distribution system in India was evolved in the wake of food shortages (1960s). The Indian PDS is a national food security system that distributed subsidised food to India s poor. PDS means distribution of essential commodities to a large number of people through a network of Fair price Shops on a recurring basis The commodities are as follows:- The capacity of the poor to purchase food can be ensured in two ways by raising the incomes or supplying food grains at subsidised prices. While employment generation programmes attempt the first solution, the PDS is the mechanism for the second option. A network of more than 4.62 lakh fair price shops (FPS) distributing commodities worth more than Rs 30,000 crore annually to about 160 million families, the PDS in India is perhaps the largest distribution network of its kind in the world. This huge network can play a more meaningful role only if it ensures the availability of food to the poor households. ü ü ü ü Wheat Rice Sugar Kerosine There are full time FPS run by cooperatives. More than 93 per cent of the fair price shops of Tamil Nadu are managed by cooperatives. There are 4673 part time FPS, 549 women shops and 36 mobile FPS functioning in TamilNadu. 6/16/2015 Coop Research Seminar, Finland 16

18 Cooperative Education The National Cooperative Union of India, (NCUI) was established in 1929 The objectives of the Union -to promote and develop the cooperative movement in India, to educate, guide and assist the people in their efforts, to build up and expand the cooperative sector and to save as an exponent of cooperative opinion in accordance with cooperative principles". The membership of NCUI is broad-based comprising of cooperative institutions at national level, state level and multi-state cooperative societies representing all sectors of the Indian cooperative movement. At present, there are 207 institutions which are members of NCUI. 6/16/2015 Coop Research Seminar, Finland 18
