1 PRIMARY & SECONDARY SCHOOLS MATHAMATICS CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION Keynote Speakers: Charlie Stripp is a passionate advocate of mathematics education across all phases of education. He taught mathematics in the state sector for 10 years, both in secondary schools and in a large Further Education College. In 2000 he joined the educational charity Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) to set up and lead the project that eventually became the national Further Mathematics Support Programme, a highly successful government-funded programme that is still managed by MEI. Charlie became MEI s Chief Executive in From March 2013 he became Director of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), whilst continuing as MEI s Chief Executive. 2 Judy Aveyard is a Specialist teacher with the Special Educational Needs and Inclusion Team. She has a wealth of experience having spent over 30 years in schools and the last 8 years in specialist services. She has held a number of senior leadership roles including the position of Acting head teacher for a year, where she successfully lead the school out of an authority category. In her advisory role for the local authority Judy has developed a specialist role in High Schools and has spent time developing innovative methods in teaching mathematics. Her work has been recognised by the National Numeracy Organisation and she is now part of an expert panel with a remit to raise attainment in key skills in mathematics in adult education. Sarah Coltman is a primary school improvement consultant with the 0-11 Learning Improvement team. Sarah s area of expertise and passion lies in the Early Years. Within Early Years training, Sarah focusses on giving key messages about excellent practice and pedagogy. As an assistant head teacher for seven years, Sarah has a wealth of experience of raising standards within schools. A key role within Sarah s work is moderation and she is the Strategic Lead for moderation of the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile in Leeds and in addition regularly provides support and training for colleagues in EYFS and key stage one on literacy, phonics and mathematics. Colin Davies is a primary school improvement consultant with the Leeds 0-11 Learning Improvement team, having previously taught in Leeds and worked as an ICT consultant. In his current role, he supports schools across a range of subjects including mathematics, science and ICT through courses and in-school work. He is also part of the primary assessment team, delivering training and supporting schools in all aspects of statutory assessment.

3 Karen Knepper is a primary school improvement consultant with the 0-11 Learning Improvement team. Karen is an experienced primary practitioner, trainer and a specialist teacher for mathematics. Karen has taught all ages from reception to adults in schools in England, Australia, South America and Germany. Karen developed her expertise in mathematics through the numeracy specialist qualification and through her roles as adult mathematics tutors in prisons and through supporting the mathematics specialist teacher program in Leeds. She is an accredited Talking Maths, and Numicon trainer and holds the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), professional development accredited lead. Melanie Lee was the Head of Mathematics at Horsforth School for three years and she has recently moved into a Mathematics Leadership role with Outwood Grange Academy Trust. She has had nine years experience of teaching mathematics and three and a half years overseeing a rapid improvement of results and uptake at post 16. This has been achieved through raising expectation of students, developing a team ethos of staff, encouraging innovation and allowing staff to explore and develop teaching strategies whilst developing a sound base of well delivered basic skills appropriate to the level of the students. Scott Morton is the Assistant Subject Leader of Mathematics at Cockburn School, Leeds. He has a wide range of teaching experience and has taught students across the ability spectrum from P-levels to A Level Further Mathematics. He is passionate about the use of visual models to support students conceptual understanding of key mathematical ideas and this area of interest underpins his current research at Oxford University and involvement with National Numeracy.

4 Joe Murray has held teaching and leadership roles with mathematics in several schools in the North West for more than 30 years as well as working as mathematics consultant / adviser with three local authorities. Now retired, Joe serves on the General Council of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics and has offered numerous talks and workshops at conferences and universities around the country promoting membership of ATM, sharing his passionate interest in the learning & teaching of mathematics. Therese O Sullivan is a teaching and learning consultant within the Closing the Gap team. She has worked within this field at LCC for 11 years following many years of teaching experience in the classroom and at senior management level. She is an experienced trainer and specialist in language development across the curriculum as well as English as an additional language. Therese is passionate about language development for vulnerable groups, recognising the impact of good language skills on accelerating progress and closing the gap in attainment. Within these broad areas she can offer expert support and guidance on: language development in individual subjects, language development for success in maths, how language works to accelerate progress in writing, meaningful approaches to teaching grammar as part of the writing process and making the curriculum accessible to EAL learners. Tracey Thomas-Marshall is a primary school improvement consultant with the 0-11 Learning Improvement team. Previously, Tracey worked a national strategies consultant for mathematics. As a deputy and acting head teacher, Tracey developed her expertise to identify priorities and actions to raise standards and provide the best education possible for children, especially within mathematics. Tracey has a passion for mathematics and has spoken for the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) on a regional level.

5 Trinity Academy Halifax is an outstanding, non-selective academy based in north Halifax, West Yorkshire. In % of all students achieved 5A* - C grades including English and Maths. Since becoming an academy three years ago the proportion of students achieving 5A* - C grades, including English and Maths, has risen by 24%. The academy was awarded funding under the DfE Innovation Fund to make its proposed solution to the removal of national curriculum levels, The Mastery Pathway, available to other schools. Launched in summer 2014, this system has been developed with the input of a variety of experts and primary and secondary colleagues.
