2 Primary Education Exploring Costume Jump head first into West Yorkshire Playhouse s fantastic Costume Department to learn all about fashion, clothing and costume. Come on an interactive learning adventure with us to give your students unprecedented access to dress-up and explore within our treasure trove of costumes. West Yorkshire Playhouse strives to build long-term partnerships with Primary teachers and their students through a range of creative opportunities both at the Playhouse and in school. All sessions are tailored to the needs of your group to support your teaching. Choose from the following menu of workshops or contact us to discuss your options. Workshops Creative Literacy These sessions look at a significant Author s work using drama techniques, literacy support and creative writing tasks to bring their story to life. Roald Dahl s James and the Giant Peach Michael Rosen s We re Going on a Bear Hunt Janet and Allan Ahlberg s The Jolly Postman Julia Donaldson s Room on the Broom Jacqueline Wilson s The Story of Tracy Beaker Got another idea? We d love to hear from you. Suitable for: Foundation, KS1 and KS2 The Creative Literacy workshop ensured all the children were included and thoroughly enjoyed the learning it was a really successful investment for us as a school. - Teacher, Moortown Primary 2015 Once Upon a Time (Characters in your classroom) These sessions are led by an actor in role as a famous character from your chosen story. From Traditional Tales, to Ancient Myths and Legends, these practical sessions explore classic stories and folk tales with your students to complement your curriculum. Suitable for: Early Years, Foundation, KS1 & KS2 Play in a Day From Pirates to Fairytales, let us bring your class topic to life with a full or half day of drama, writing, making and creating with your students, culminating in a performance at the end of the day. Suitable for: Early Years, Foundation, KS1 & KS2 Cost: from 250+VAT Primary Players: Shakespeare Festival 2016 Now in its third year, this exciting in-depth project offers Primary schools the opportunity to work with us in partnership towards a full-scale collaborative Shakespeare production at West Yorkshire Playhouse in July Suitable for: Foundation, KS1 & KS2 The programme includes six in-school artist-led workshops, alongside tailored support for the teaching of Shakespeare in your curriculum plus professional development training for teaching staff. 3 Secondary Schools and Colleges By Charles Dickens A new adaptation by Michael Eaton Director Lucy Bailey Fri 4 March - Sat 2 April Our sessions are developed in consultation with Teachers of Drama and English in order to provide valuable and enriching opportunities to enhance students creative understanding of theatre-making. Character Spotlight This session will shine the spotlight on the characters of Pip and Miss Havisham. Students will take part in a range of practical activities directly from the rehearsal room to discover how these characters were brought to life. Suitable for: GCSE / A level English and Drama students Cost: 150+VAT ( 125 +VAT Great Expectations: The Making of This session offers a valuable, exclusive and practical insight into the rehearsal process. Suitable for: GCSE / A Level Drama and Theatre Studies Cost: 150+VAT ( 125+VAT Nineteenth Century Dickens A practical exploration of the social, historical and political context of the novel. Suitable for: students of GCSE / A-Level English Literature and Drama / Theatre Studies Cost: 150 +VAT ( 125 +VAT A West Yorkshire Playhouse and Improbable co-production KES Thur 5 - Sat 14 May Based on the book by Lauren Slater Director Phelim McDermott Opening Skinner s Box is a whistle stop tour of the scientific quest to make sense of what we are and who we are. Based on the fascinating and controversial book by Lauren Slater, Opening Skinner s Box features ten great psychological experiments and the ways in which they turned our ideas about ourselves upside down. Commissioned by The Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University, The Lincoln Center Festival, The Brisbane Festival, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Northern Stage. Fri 20 May - Sat 4 June KES By Barry Hines adapated for the stage by Robert Alan Evans Director Amy Leach Bullied by his brother, his mother had no time for him. Teased by his teachers, Billy Casper was totally alone. Then there was Kes. This intimate play is stripped back to the essence of what it is to be young today. In Sondheim s classic musical, well-known fairy tale characters collide, but for Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and Red Riding Hood, Happily Ever After turns out to be far from the end of the story. In a full or half day session, students of any age can explore a Shakespeare text of your choosing. From A Midsummer Night s Dream to Pericles! These active sessions offer an in-depth insight into narrative, character, themes and language. Suitable for: All ages Cost: from VAT Behind-The-Scenes By Alice Nutter Dates TBC As the Great War gathers pace, Agnes and her sister Edith revel in their new found independence. A catastrophic explosion on Tuesday 5 December 1916 causes the Barnbow Lasses to discover the true cost of the cry for More Shells! Barnbow Canaries is an original play of a much censored and rarely told story from local writer Alice Nutter. Backstage Tours Led by our Education Team, tours can be tailored for groups of all ages and interests. Taking you behind the scenes, you ll discover the inner workings of the theatre and share secrets of how productions make it from page to stage. To help you manage your visit we offer 1 free staff ticket for every 9 student tickets booked. Schools tickets are limited and available for Monday to Friday performances only. Please note that standard group rates apply beyond our schools rate allocation. School group tickets are not available to be booked online. AGE RECOMMENDATION Age recommendation is assessed according to the complexity and sensitivity of issues, images, sexual references and strength of language used in both West Yorkshire Playhouse productions and touring productions. Any sensitive content is highlighted in our main brochure but we do encourage schools to contact our Box Office with any specific concerns or questions regarding sensitive material in productions.
