Ripon Junior Triathlon Race Instructions Catherine Greensit
Ripon Junior Triathlon Sunday 12 th July 2015 At 10.30am A BTF Sanctioned Event Competitors Information We are so excited that you have entered the second ever Ripon Junior Triathlon! We have worked to try and make this one of the best junior triathlons in the UK. Set out below is some important information and some helpful tips. If there is anything you are unsure about ask one of the marshals on the day, we are all here to help. Parents may want to read this with your child so they fully understand the contents of the document How to get to the event The race site is located at Ripon Racecourse on the B6265, Ripon, HG4 1UG. From the A1(M) (Jcn 48 from the South, or Jcn 49 from the North) follow the A168 signed Ripon, and then the B6265. Ripon Racecourse is on the left just after a narrow bridge. There is lots of parking in the Racecourse grounds and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance will be collecting a 2 charity donation for parking at the gates. Please follow signage for car parking. A site map is attached. Timings (Race timings are controlled by the Race Director and we are very flexible to ensure we ensure a professional and enjoyable day for all) 8am 10am Registration and transition open 10am 10am Transition closes Tristart and Tristar 1 stay in transition Prize giving will occur after each race. Once each race is 10.30am TriStart start Tristar 2 report to transition complete parents can 11am Tristar 3 report to transition collect equipment in a short window before the next 11.30am Youths report to transition race starts Once the last race has completed Registration Prize giving Everyone to receive a medal Open 8:00 10:00. I will be waiting in the registration building with a competitors list on hand. We will find your name and race number then I will show you where to register. You 1
will need to show your Triathlon England licence if you are a member. You will get your swim cap, time chip, race pack and body markings here. Secure the time chip around your left ankle with the chip on the outside. A large laminated bike number will be provided with cable ties to secure to the front of your bike. Make sure it is positioned so the marshals easily see it as you fly past them each lap. Place the helmet sticker on the front of your helmet. Secure your number to t shirt/trisuit facing forwards. Responsibility for roadworthiness and compliance with BTF rules of bikes rests with the competitor. Your bike and helmet will be checked upon entering transition by a BTF referee or Marshal. Transition Open 8:00 10:00. A Marshal will be present at the entry point to transition. Have all of your numbers and stickers on your equipment prior to racking. In transition there is a row of racking for each age category and a Marshal to assist you position your bike (See the diagram below). Place your kit anywhere along that row. If you need help, ask a Marshal they are there to help you and ensure you have a great day out! Up to 10am 1 parent or coach can assist their child in transition with equipment placement. After 10am all parents must leave Transition. Once racked and your transition area is set out you are free to look around the expo site until your report time. It is very important that you listen for the PA announcement and are back in transition by your report time. I will meet you there, check you in and walk you and the rest of your age group to the swim start. As a full length wetsuit is compulsory for this triathlon swim, you may need to be in transition earlier than your report time to get your suit on. They can be tricky, especially if you are rushing! A safety briefing will be conducted at the swim start and there will be time for any last minute queries that you may have to be answered. 2
Run Finish Transition entry and exit Run Out Bike out TriS T1 Bike Direction lap 2,3,4 Swim in T2 T3 Race HQ Youth Run in Bike In Ripon Junior Triathlon Transition Layout Rules The event will be held in accordance with British Triathlon rules. A copy of these rules can be obtained from the web-site ( The event referee will be wearing a red British Triathlon jacket or gilet and will be able to answer any further questions you may have on the day. The referee will also enforce any penalties/hear any appeals. Photography/Videos Any parent/supporter who wishes to take photographs or video any parts of the event must register (at registration) and wear a numbered sticker. Anyone not wearing a sticker should not be taking pictures. This is in compliance with the BTF child protection policy. Facilities Showering and changing facilities are available at the race course. Indulge of Harrogate will be on site to supply catering. Breakfast buns and substantial snacks will be available from early in the morning. Camping is available from the night before. For more details on this and the BBQ on Saturday night can be found at The Race Swim By entering this event you declare that you are capable of swimming the distance appropriate to your age category in open water and you declare that you understand the risk associated with open water swimming. In the unlikely event you feel ill after the event consult 3
your doctor and tell them you have been open water swimming. Ripon Racecourse Lake is a natural environment with high quality water which is tested and monitored. Wetsuits are mandatory below 14 degrees. Wetsuits are optional between 14 degrees and 22 degrees. Wetsuits are banned above 22 degrees. We would encourage all young people to wear a wetsuit unless it is banned by temperature. This adds a level of reassurance to the swimmer. Wetsuits can be made up of 3 separate parts. Maximum thickness of 5mm and ¾ length suits are allowed. Full details are the BTF rule book. You will start the swim in the water. Do not get into the water until asked to do so. The entry into the water is uneven and on a slight slope. Make a gentle entry, warm up in the area behind the start line and get used to the water temperature. The start is a floating swim start so please be aware of others around you and try to avoid collisions. We have safety swimmers (adults) there to help you if you need them. TriStars swim in a straight line back to the exit ramp. All others keep the large yellow buoy to your right. You may experience congestion around the buoy. Stay calm and be aware of those around you. You may get some weed around your feet, hands and goggles. It is easily removed. There are fish in the lake too, but with so many of you getting in at once they will be keeping out of the way at the other end of the lake. A lead canoe will accompany the swimmers and there will also be other canoeists to provide assistance if required. If you have a minor issue (goggles come off, swallow water, feel anxious) turn onto your back, float, control your breathing and turn back over and continue when ready. If you get into difficulty, turn onto your back. Float and raise one hand in the air. Remain calm, control your breathing and wait for assistance. Marshals in the water and kayaks will attend and speak with you. You can hold onto a kayak to rest if you need to and then continue when ready. Exit the water under the red inflatable gantry. Marshals will help you up the concrete ramp. The concrete and the matting can sometimes be slippery so watch your footing and others getting out. Sometimes you can feel dizzy, this is perfectly normal, just go steady as your body gets used to being upright again. Have a look at the swim course here. Age Group Category Swim Distance 8 years Tri-start 75m 9-10 years Tri-star 1 150m years Tri-star 2 200m years Tri-star 3 300m years Youth 400m Transition 1 Enter transition from the swim exit run to the top of your racking area and back down to locate your bike. A Marshal will be on hand to help direct you. Put your number on facing the back. Get your trainers on and make sure your helmet is fastened before you remove your bike. Exit transition onto the bike course. Bike 4
Push your bike over the mount line then mount. Mount and dismount lines will be clearly marked. TriStarts will ride out to a cone where they will turn and return the same way to cover 800m. For all others the bike route is made up of a series of 2km laps around the lake. A marshal will be recording your laps. When you have completed your laps head back into transition and dismount your bike before the dismount line. Have a look at the bike route. Age Group Category Distance Bike Laps 8 years Tri-start 800m Part lap 9-10 years Tri-star 1 2km years Tri-star 2 4km years Tri-star 3 6km years Youth 8km 4 The surface is part track and part short grass. Be careful of track hazards, uneven ground, gravel, and loose material. The NYP TriStars regularly cycle around here and it is passable on a road bike. If you are not a confident cyclist a mountain bike may suit you better. Transition 2 Re-enter transition and rack your bike in your place. Remember to keep your helmet on until your bike is racked. Turn your race number to the front and head back out of the run exit. Run The run route is an out and back down the side of the lake, this time all on grass. You will run to a turnaround point where a marshal will be, you turn around to head back for the finish line. Age Group Category Distance 8 years Tri-start 600m 9-10 years Tri-star1 1.2km years Tri-star 2 1.8km years Tri-star 3 2.4km years Youth 2.4km Finish Line The finish line is clearly marked with a large red gantry that you will run under. Remember to smile as you cross the finish line and make sure the marshals can see your number. There is a medal for you at the finish and water too. A Marshal will take your timing chip from you before you leave the finish compound (you will need to pay 25 fee if it s lost so take care of it). 5
To get your bike after the race show your number belt - this will match the number on your bike. A Parent/Coach can enter transition exit to help competitors with bikes and other kit. Transition will be opened for 10 minutes between races to collect your bike. Results are available immediately in the results tent. Prize giving will occur after each race. I can t wait to see you on the 12 th July! Catherine NYPTri Stars Parents and Supporters We are hoping that everyone will be well supported but we must insist that all spectators obey directions by marshals and stay off the race course.. Spectators must not help competitors during the race. This will result in competitors gaining a penalty or at worst being disqualified (this includes running alongside them). You will be asked to read a race disclaimer document. This is confirming your child is fit and well, ready to swim in open water and understands the issues which arise from such swimming. Their bike and equipment adheres to BTF rules and they will generally abide by the rules of the BTF. This disclaimer is for their safety as well as NYP Tri and NYP Tri Stars. Parents/Coaches are responsible for collecting their child or children from the finish compound. The Event Team will not release the child from the compound until they are collected. Please be prompt as the next race will start within minutes of the finish Extensive planning has gone into this event to ensure that it will be a safe and enjoyable day. Please could you help with the following? i) In accordance with British Triathlon guidelines on Child Protection, any person wishing to take Photographs or video any part of the even must register at Registration. You must provide your contact details, phone, , club details and where any photos will be published. You will be given some identification, which you must wear at all times whilst using a camera. Anyone found taking photographs that is not registered will be asked to leave the grounds. This is for the safety of all the young people on site. ii) If you do not wish for your child to appear in the local press or in Triathlon related press including the regional website please state this at registration. iii) As parents you agree to abide by the British Triathlon Child Protection Guidelines ( and understand that any behaviour that contravenes these rules could lead to your exclusion from attending further British Triathlon sanctioned events. If you require any further information please contact me on mailto:racedirector@ripontriathlon.co.uk Parents Check List - Very Important things your child must have 6
Wet suit we understand it is a costly item. ¾ suits are allowed. tri suit or swimming costume goggles Bike Helmet Running trainers Other helpful things you may like to have Water bottle Towel Talc T-shirt if you are wearing a swimming costume elastic laces race belt Helpful hints for triathletes 1. Practice transition at home before the race. It is the 4 th discipline and it is amazing how difficult it is to fasten a helmet if you are trying to be quick! 2. Eat something two hours before your start time and keep sipping water up until the start. Dehydration slows you down and makes you feel terrible. 3. Arrive in good time so you can find your way around and look at the course and transition area. 4. There are lots of marshals to help you out and answer any questions you have. They are there to make sure you have a good day. 5. If you are wearing a swimming costume practice putting a t-shirt on while you are damp. 6. Loosen your laces (or use elastic laces) and put some talcum powder in your shoes to help them go on easily with wet feet. 7. Go to the toilet at least 10 minutes before your report time. 8. Warm up before the event. Have a jog and a stretch and get your blood circulating around and muscles prepared and ready to race. 9. Make sure your numbers are visible to the lap counters so they know who you are. 10. Pace yourself. You have to go a long way so start off steady and speed up (this is called a negative split). If you are struggling, slow down even walk is you have to just don t give up and don t stop. Keep moving forwards to the finish line where your friends and family will all be waiting for you! 11. Smile especially when it is getting tough - as smiling helps your whole body to relax. Site Plan (for an indication may not reflect exact detail) 7
