2 COURSE DESCRIPTION There has been for quite some time a persistent advocacy of the improvement of world nutritional status, especially in developing countries through substantial increase in the intake of protein foods of animal origin. There is therefore the need for this course which presents brief history of meat ( e.g beef, mutton chevon) industry in Nigeria, stard growing finishing management practices, housing requirements, feeds feeding, breeding, herd record keeping health management of beef cattle, sheep goats. The course also provides information on marketing techniques for establishing large beef cattle, sheep goats ranches. COURSE OBJECTIVES The objectives of this course are to: introduce students to the hling stard management practices of beef cattle, sheep goat production provide students with opportunities to develop basic skills with respect to feedlot operation, breeding, herd record keeping/planning, establishment of ranches meat industry. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES / COMPETENCIES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: (Knowledge based) explain the effect of climate on vegetation distribution ruminants production in Nigeria; differentiate between breeds of beef cattle, sheep goats; underst potentials limitations of ruminant production in the economy of Nigeria; carry out efficient management practises in ruminant production; (Skills) establish small ruminant fattening scheme; able to keep records of farm operations establish grazing ls integrate ruminant production with backyard farming GRADING SYSTEM FOR THE COURSE This course will be graded as follows: Class Attendance 0% Field practical 5% Assignments/Test(s) 5% Final Examination 60% 2
3 TOTAL 00% GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Attendance: It is expected that every student will be in class for lectures also participate in all practical exercises. Attendance records will be kept used to determine each person s qualification to sit for the final examination. In case of illness or other unavoidable cause of absence, the student must communicate as soon as possible with any of the instructors, indicating the reason for the absence. Academic Integrity: Violations of academic integrity, including dishonesty in assignments, examinations, or other academic performances are prohibited. You are not allowed to make copies of another person s work submit it as your own; that is plagiarism. All cases of academic dishonesty will be reported to the University Management for appropriate sanctions in accordance with the guidelines for hling students misconduct as spelt out in the Students Hbook. Assignments Group Work: Students are expected to submit assignments as scheduled. Failure to submit an assignment as at when due will earn you zero for that assignment. Only under extenuating circumstances, for which a student has notified any of the instructors in advance, will late submission of assignments be permitted. Code of Conduct in Lecture Rooms Laboratories: Students should turn off their cell phones during lectures. Students are prohibited from engaging in other activities (such as texting, watching videos, etc.) during lectures. Food drinks are not permitted in the laboratories. 4 COURSE OUTLINE Week Topic Remarks Introduction Course Overview History Types of meat industries in Nigeria 2 & 3 4&5 Origin, domestication breeds of: beef cattle sheep goats Beef production climate Classification of tropical climate vegetation zones Direct indirect effects of climate on cattle production Systems of cattle beef production During this first class, the expectation of the students from the course will also be documented. Practical exercise will involve visits to livestock farms to have knowledge of types of domestication, species breeds identification. Students will be taught the systems of beef cattle production involve them in the field practical operations. 6 &7 Beef cattle production in Nigeria: Traditional system Ranching Smallholder fattening schemes Feedlot operations Rearing of beef calves 8 & 9 Sheep production management Origin, breeds domestication Potentials limitations of sheep production Factors favourable unfavourable to sheep production Nutrition, breeding, housing health management 0 & Goat production management Origin, breeds domestication Potentials limitations of sheep production Management systems Factors favourable unfavourable to goats production Nutrition, breeding, housing health Exercises will involve field trips to smallholder farms, ranches Teaching Research farm to acquire field experience. Students will be the taught the basic principles of sheep production in the tropics. MID-SEMESTER TEST Students will be the taught the basic principles of goat production in the tropics. 4
