ACT Aspire Information Meeting September 29, 2015

Shifts in English Language Arts Standards Alabama Standards are called the College and Career Readiness Standards. In 2010 the state adopted these standards. A standard is an expectation of what a student should know at a particular grade level. Three areas that were different from previous standards: 1. Build knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational texts. 2. Reading and writing grounded in evidence from texts. 3. Regular practice with complex texts and their academic vocabulary.

Example of CCRS Standard Alabama CCRS, Informational Text: Craft and Structure, Standard 4. Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. Grade 2 RI 13. Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a Grade 2 topic or subject area. Grade 5 RI 13. Determine the meaning of general academic and domain specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a Grade 5 topic or subject.

Shifts in Mathematical Standards Alabama Math Standards were adopted in Three shifts in Math standards: 1. Focus on standards. 2. Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics within grades 3. Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill, and application.

ACT Aspire: The Test Itself ACT Aspire is a vertically (grade level to grade level alignment) scaled battery of achievement tests. Measures progress toward college and career readiness. Benchmarks will give information whether students are on target for college and career readiness. (Ready, Close, or In Need of Support). Questions are based on the ACT College and Career Readiness Standards which are very close to the Alabama College and Career Readiness Standards.

Types of Questions and Depth of Knowledge Required Selected Response - Multiple Choice questions. Constructed Response - requires students to explain, justify (math), critique, or otherwise demonstrate knowledge by writing a response. Technology Enhanced Questions - interface with computer to answer a question. Ex. Move items from a reading passage into the correct sequence. We did not have these questions on our test because we took traditional paper and pencil test with the exception of a small percentage of students. Webb s Depth of Knowledge - a tool to determine the complexity of the task or assignment that students are given to complete. ACT Aspire uses this terminology when describing the types of questions on the test. 1. Level 1 - Recall and Reproduction. Examples are to locate, calculate, define. 2. Level 2 - Skill/Concept. This level requires students to compare or differentiate among events, people, objects. Examples are to infer, predict, categorize, estimate. 3. Level 3 - Strategic Thinking and Reasoning. This level asks students to plan, reason, analyze, and evaluate to solve real world problems. Examples are to critique, cite evidence, develop a logical argument. All three of these levels are tested on ACT Aspire. There is a Level 4 in Webb s Depth of Knowledge, but it cannot be tested on a standardized test.

ACT Aspire Reading ACT Aspire Reading measures a students ability to derive meaning from, and reason logically about text passages. Passages come from literary narratives (fiction, memoirs, personal essays) and informational texts from natural sciences and social studies. Students are asked to determine central ideas, locate significant details, understand sequence of events, make comparisons, comprehend cause-effect relationships, determine the meaning of context-dependent words, draw generalizations, and analyze the author s method or the narrator s voice.

ACT Aspire Reading Skill Categories Key Ideas and Details: Students must read texts closely, determine central themes and ideas, and summarize information and ideas accurately, understand sequential, comparative, and cause-effect relationships. Craft and Structure: Students are asked to determine word and phrase meanings to analyze an author s word choice, analyze text structure, and understand purpose and point of view. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Students are required to understand hoe arguments are constructed, make connections to prior knowledge and between and among texts. ACT Aspire tests will provide a measure of how a student comprehends complex text for their grade level. Measure of a students ability to comprehend a above grade level text.

ACT Aspire Math ACT Aspire Math assessments are developed to reflect students knowledge and skill accumulation over time. Math categories are consistent with College and Career Readiness standards which include: Numbers and Operations in Base 10, Fractions, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Expressions and Equations, Ratios and Proportional Relationships, Measurement and Data, Geometry, and Statistics. Students are asked to justify and explain their mathematical reasoning. Students are also asked to apply mathematical information, or model its use, not just memorize a formula. Most of the questions are what we used to call word problems. Students will receive a score on their grade level progress which will let them know if they are on target for the next grade. Students are required to apply and integrate math topics from previous grade levels which is indicated in the Foundation score. ACT Aspire measures how student use their mathematical reasoning to real world problems, not memorize formulas or computational skills.

Individual Student Report You will see a chart/graph with your student s score in an orange dot. There is a green line along the chart which indicates the cut off for benchmark (Ready or Close). There is a projection area in orange which predicts the next two to three years of scores if the students continues to progress. You will notice on the right side of the page the percentage of points in the particular content areas either in Math or Reading. It will order your student s score from the highest percentage to the lowest percentage. You will also see a suggestion for improvement.

Individual Student Report National percentage rank among all students who took the ACT Aspire. 83rd percentile means that this student scored higher than 83% of the students in their grade level on this test. Progress with Text Complexity - Two boxes, either Yes or No, are on the report and one box is checked. Students who are reading and comprehending just above their grade level are checked Yes. They are understanding vocabulary and sentence structure which aids their comprehension.
