2 About Adoption Matters Adoption Matters is an independent children s charity specialising in adoption and adoption support. That is all we do, and have been doing so for nearly 70 years. We offer our services to an area across the whole of the North West of England, North East Wales, parts of Yorkshire & Humber (Barnsley, Bradford, Calderdale, Doncaster, Kirklees, Rotherham, Sheffield, Wakefield and York) and to the South (Shropshire, Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Telford & Wrekin, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley and Sandwell). We are the ONLY voluntary adoption agency in the North West to be rated as Outstanding by Ofsted for three consecutive inspections. We were named Voluntary Adoption Agency of the year in 2014 and 2012 by the British Association of Adoption & Fostering (BAAF). Therapy Service Adoption is a life enhancing and positive journey for a family. At times however, this process can become a cause for distress and challenge. It is recognised that working with children and young people that have experienced early trauma requires specialist knowledge and expertise. Parenting such children can also present challenges and require significant emotional resilience. In order to support and facilitate change, the therapy service provides evidence based interventions that best meet the needs of adopted children and their families. Each family has different strengths and needs. Adoption Matters Therapy Service therefore provides a personalised therapeutic intervention based on a structured assessment.

3 The Assessment Therapeutic Intervention This is conducted by a clinical psychologist or child psychotherapist and will cover all aspects of a child s life. This will include sessions with the adopters, the child, school and other professionals as appropriate. The assessment will provide clear recommendations regarding a way forward. Any therapeutic goals could usually be delivered by the therapist completing the report. Adoption Matters Therapy Service can provide a wide range of therapists located in the North West. The therapists have specialist skills and experience of working with adopted children and their families. Approaches include Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, Theraplay, Child Psychotherapy, Filial Play Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), I Matter. The approaches incorporate developments in neuropsychology, brain development and sensory integration. Therapists are registered to practice and have ongoing clinical supervision. Therapeutic interventions are informed by an assessment, have clearly defined goals with regular reviews as agreed. Work is evaluated so that progress and effectiveness can be monitored. The cost of therapy will be determined by the duration and frequency of intervention. In order to provide indication of costs, examples of interventions are listed. Assessment Costs Work undertaken: 3 hours with adopters 1.5 hours observation/session of child 1 hour reading papers 1 hour information gathering with social worker 2 hours information gathering with other professionals including school, previous carer if appropriate 1.5 hours feedback session Report Supervision Total cost 1, 725 Travel and room hire if needed is additional.

4 Therapy The cost of therapy will depend on the requirements of individual families. Costs will vary according to duration of the therapy and the type of intervention. In order to give some indication of costs some illustrative scenarios are given. Example Costs Theraplay with one child: 3, 672 plus travel and room hire This includes introductory and preparatory sessions. Theraplay assessment sessions with both parents (MIM). 12 Theraplay sessions. Weekly phone consultation with parents. Mid term and final reviews with adopters and professionals. Mid term and final written report. Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy with a clinical psychologist over 6 months: 4, 694 plus travel and room hire This includes weekly sessions for three months then fortnightly sessions. Telephone updates to social worker. Mid term and final reviews with adopters and professionals. Mid term and final reports. Individual work with play therapist over 6 months: 5, 190 plus travel and room hire This includes weekly sessions for 6 months. Reviews, reports and updates.
