Allegro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Piano Trio in B-flat by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Divirtimento No. 11 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart MATERIALS: -Copies for all of the students of the birthday cake sheet and the timeline of our lives sheet -Copies for 12 students of the number of birthdays in a month sheet x5 index cards for students on which to write their own timeline -Copies for all students of "Song Graph", "Musical Instruments Graph" -One copy each of the Mozart s timeline worksheets. 6 students will become a timeline by using each year one time. -Colored pencils or crayons to use on graphs

2 2 Mozart Math Activity Plan and Resource Guide OBJECTIVES: Students will find the median of a group of numbers Students will create a timeline of their lives as well as the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Students will count the number of beats or the number of instruments in a piece of music and graph their findings Students will use subtraction to find out the age of Mozart at different points in his life NATIONAL STANDARDS IN EDUCATION: (http://www.educationworld.com/standards/) NM-DATA FORMULATE QUESTIONS THAT CAN BE ADDRESSED WITH DATA AND COLLECT, ORGANIZE AND DISPLAY RELEVANT DATA TO THE ANSWER Collect data using observations, surveys and experiments Represent data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs Students identify and explain the stylistic features of a given musical work that serve to define its aesthetic tradition and its historical or cultural context NM-DATA SELECT AND USE APPROPRIATE STATISTICAL METHODS TO ANALYZE DATA Use measures of center, focusing on the median, and understand what each does and does not indicate about the data set NA-M.K-4.6 LISTENING TO, ANALYZING AND DESCRIBING MUSIC Students demonstrate perception skills by moving, by answering questions about, and by describing aural examples of music of various styles representing diverse cultures Students identify the sounds of a variety of instruments, including many orchestra and band instruments, and instruments from various cultures, as well as children's voices and male and female adult voices OHIO STANDARDS IN EDUCATION: (http://www.ode.state.oh.us) Benchmark : Students use patterns, relations and functions to model, represent and

3 3 analyze problem situations that involve variable quantities. Students analyze, model and solve problems using various representations such as tables, graphs and equations. Grade Three 7. Create tables to record, organize and analyze data to discover patterns and rules. Grade Four 2. Represent and analyze patterns and functions using words, tables and graphs. Benchmark : Students listen to a varied repertoire of music and respond by analyzing and describing music using correct terminology. Grades K-4 A. Identify and demonstrate elements of music using developmentally appropriate music vocabulary. B. Identify the sounds of a variety of instruments including orchestra, band and classroom instruments.

4 4 Mozart Math Activity Plan and Resource Guide PRE-CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES PROCEDURE: I. The students are asked to complete the birthday cake worksheet.. The students are asked to come to the board to glue their cake on a line plot/bar graph of 12 months of the year. (Use large chart paper and make a line plot/graph.) Children glue their birthday above the correct month. II. Teacher places a cake decorated with Mozart s name in the January section of the graph. III. Children are asked to make observations and statements (verbally) about the graph. Teacher asks: Which month has the most birthdays? Which month has the least birthdays? Which month has zero birthdays? How many more birthdays in (ex. Jan. Than Dec.?), etc. IV. Children are asked to write a short paragraph about the graph using complete sentences and proper capitalization and punctuation. Children read their paragraphs to a partner and help each other proof their work. V. 12 children are given an 8 X 12 piece of paper. Each is assigned to write the total number of birthdays and the name of the month using the class birthday graph. Write the number as large as the paper. VI. The 12 children line up in front of the class holding their number/month from smallest to largest. The teacher tells the students they will find the median or middle value of the birthday months. This is the way we do it: The first and last person take two steps forward. Next, have the second and next to the last students step forward. Continue this process until the last child is standing. If two are left, then the median is the number between those. For example, if it is 4 and 6 then the teacher explains that 5 is the median because it is the number exactly between those numbers.

7 7 Mozart Math Activity Plan and Resource Guide PRE-CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES PART TWO Timeline Lesson PRIOR TO THIS LESSON: Teacher sends home a questionnaire for parents to complete with children about important events in their child s life and the year they happened. (see form) I. Children are given an opportunity to read and discuss with class information from their form. Class Discussion; When were you born? When did you begin school? When did you loose your first tooth? Etc. Teacher explains they will place that information into a TIMELINE. A timeline tells what and when things happen in order or sequence by the dates. II. Children are given 3 X 5 index cards to write the year and events from their completed form. Children write each event/date on a separate card. III. Children then place these in chronological order across their desk to display their timeline.
