4 John 19: A.D. at The Cross Jesus s Final Week Friday 38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. 39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. 40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. 42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. 10 3

Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. 1. God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life. 2. Your sin separates you from God and keeps you from living the abundant live God has for you. 3. Only Jesus can forgive your sins, so you can know God s love for you and live the life He has for you. 4. We must accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, to know God s love for you and live the life He has for you. 8 Tombs - of the Hebrews were generally excavated in the solid rock, or were natural caves. Mention is made of such tombs in Judg. 8:32; 2 Sam. 2:32; 2 Kings 9:28; 23:30. They were sometimes made in gardens (2 Kings 21:26; 23:16; Matt. 27:60). They are found in great numbers in and around Jerusalem and all over the land. They were sometimes whitewashed (Matt. 23:27, 29). The body of Jesus was laid in Joseph's new rock-hewn tomb, in a garden near to Calvary. All evidence is in favour of the opinion that this tomb was somewhere near the Damascus gate, and outside the city, and cannot be identified with the so-called "holy sepulchre." The mouth of such rocky tombs was usually closed by a large stone (Heb. golal), which could only be removed by the united efforts of several men (Matt. 28:2; comp. John 11:39). 5

7 The Burial of Jesus Today when people die, we have funeral services for them. We usually put them in a coffin and we dress them in their best clothes so that family and friends can see them one last time. There are usually pictures of that person, and flowers to honor the life that was lost. When Jesus died, there were only two people that took care of His burial, Joseph of Arimathaea, and Nicodemus, the priest that came to Jesus in the night (John 3). All of Jesus other disciples had left Him because they feared what might happen if someone noticed who they were. Even Joseph was scared, but went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Sometimes, we get worried or scared of what people might say or think about us serving Jesus. Therefore, we deny Him by the things we say or the actions we take. Sometimes it is with things we do not say. Maybe we had the chance to tell someone about Jesus and we did not because of fear of what that person would think about us. Even though Jesus did not have the respect due Him, he was buried like a king. (He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords!!) Joseph and Nicodemus used about one hundred pounds of a mixture of myrrh and aloes to anoint Jesus body and then wrapped Him in strips of linen. Joseph even gave away his new tomb to bury Jesus in. We should try to be more like Joseph. When we are afraid to stand up for Jesus, we should ask Him to help us. II Timothy 1:7 God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 6 7
