1 UNIT 6 Foundations 1. Answer the following questions: a) What structures require foundations? b) What is the purpose of a foundation? 2. a) Now scan the following text and underline the words that you do not understand. b) Work in pairs: guess their meaning from the context or with the use of a dictionary and then with the whole class. 3. Read the text: A foundation is part of a structural system that supports and anchors the superstructure of a building and transmits its loads directly to the earth. To prevent damage from repeated freezethaw cycles, the bottom of a foundation must be below the frost line. The foundations of lowrise residential buildings are often supported by spread footings (but not in Slovakia), i.e., wide bases (usually made of concrete) that support walls or piers and distribute the load over a greater area. Concrete gradebeams supported by isolated footings, piers, or piles may be placed at ground level, especially in a building without a basement, to support the exterior walls. Spread footings are also used in a greatly enlarged form for high-rise buildings. Other systems for supporting heavy loads include piers, piles, and concrete caisson columns. In yielding soil, a floating foundation, consisting of rigid boxlike structures set at such a depth that the weight of the soil removed to place it equals the weight of the construction supported, may be used. Piers In building construction a pile is a vertical load-bearing member that acts as an intermediate support for the adjacent ends of two bays or spans. Bulkier than a column but smaller than a wall, a pier can support an arch or beam. The lower portion of a pier may be widened to better distribute the downward pressure of a massive overlying structure. Piles A pile is a postlike foundation member used in building construction since prehistoric times. Piles transfer building loads down to a suitable bearing stratum when the soil mass immediately below a construction is unsuitable for the direct bearing of footings. In modern civil engineering, piles of timber, steel, or concrete are driven into the ground to support a structure. Bridge piers and building foundations may be supported on groups of piles. 35

2 Caissons In engineering a caisson is a type of foundation most commonly used underwater for a bridge, but sometimes used in building construction. It is a large hollow structure that is sunk down through the earth by workers excavating earth from inside it; it ultimately becomes a permanent part of a pier. There are three types: an open caisson, which is open at both the top and bottom; a box caisson, which is closed at the bottom; and a pneumatic caisson, which has an airtight chamber to accommodate submerged workers. Caisson columns, typically 2 ft (0.65 m) or more in diameter, may be used as an alternative to bearing piles. A round hole is dug or bored up to a stable layer of earth and temporarily supported by a steel shell; it is then filled with concrete poured around a cage of reinforcing bars. 4. Read the following sentences and fill in the gaps using the following key words: span, gradebeam, yielding, footing, stratum, frost line, caisson a) A is the supporting base or groundwork of a structure such as a monument or wall. b) To prevent damage from repeated freeze-frost cycles, the bottom of the foundation must be below the. c) A concrete supported by isolated footings, piers, or piles may be placed at ground level, especially in a building without a basement, to support the exterior wall. d) In soil floating foundations may be used. e) In building construction a pile is a vertical load-bearing member that acts as an intermediate support for the adjacent ends of two bays or. f) Piles transfer building loads down to a suitable bearing when the soil mass immediately below a construction is unsuitable for the direct bearing of footings. g) A.. is mostly used underwater for a bridge, but is sometimes used in building construction. 5. Fill in the gaps with the following verbs in their correct form: anchors, include, transfer, driven, distribute, sank, transmits, supported, dug, bored, poured a) The foundations of low-rise buildings are nearly all.. on spread footings. b) A foundation is part of a structural system that supports and the superstructure of a building and its loads directly to the earth. c) Spread footings support walls or piers and.. the load over a greater area. d) Other systems for supporting heavy loads. piers, piles, and concrete caisson columns. e) Piles.. building loads down to a suitable bearing stratum. f) Piles of timber, steel, or concrete are. into the ground to support a structure. g) A caisson is a large hollow structure that is. down through the earth by workers excavating earth from inside it. h) A round hole for caisson columns is.. or up to a stable layer of earth and temporarily supported by a steel shell, then filled with concrete around a cage of reinforcing bars. 36

3 6. Work in pairs: write short definitions for the following words or expressions: a) A foundation is b) Spread footings c) A floating foundation d) A pier e) A pile f) A caisson 7. A compound adjective is an adjective which is made up of two parts and is usually written with a hyphen, e.g., never-ending, self-made and air-conditioned. Its meaning is usually clear from the words it combines. Match A and B to form a new compound adjective written with a hyphen and complete it with a suitable noun: A medium part long hand time long interest world fully B free made consuming running lasting time automated sized famous 8. Put the above compound adjectives into the gaps: a) For this meal we need a onion. b) I ve bought a pair of expensive shoes in Vienna. c) Madonna is a singer. d) Mattie has a job in the evenings. e) New cars are assembled by machines. f) High-quality cosmetic creams have effects. g) Health service reform is a. process. h) Young married couples used to be granted loans. 9. Fill in each of the blanks to form as many new compound adjectives as you can:... -proof... -made... free 10. Scan the text in 3, find some compound adjectives and write them down: 11. A compound noun is a fixed expression which is made up of more than one word and functions as a noun. Compound nouns can be written as two words, e.g. youth hostel, credit card, or they may be written with a hyphen, e.g. data-processing, letter-box (UK). Sometimes they may be written as one word, e.g. earring. 37

4 Complete these bubbles with the following compound nouns: prefabricated, four-storey, floating, supporting, flexible, engineering, high-rise, sandwich, spread, load-bearing, concrete, residential, flat-roofed, shell, deep, pile. Note: A structure is a large building, bridge, dam, etc., especially one that has many parts. A building is a structure such as a house, church, or factory that has a roof and walls. engineering structure building foundation sandwich 12. Scan the above text and list the compound nouns you find. 13. Choose 5 of the compound words (nouns or adjectives) from the above text which you particularly want to learn and write 5 sentences using them. 38
