Vice Principal The teacher reduction will be accommodated in a 0.5 reduction in Kindergarten and 0.25 reductions at the grade two levels (where the enrolment numbers are lowest). To accommodate we will be arranging

2 PARKING Just a friendly reminder to parents who are dropping off and picking up their children at school. Traffic can be very hectic around the school, and there is often little room to navigate. To ensure the safety of our children we ask that you please refrain from using the parking lots on the East and West sides of the school. We have designated the side streets of Herkimer Street, George Street, King Street as pick up areas. Students should use the crosswalks to access these streets. We thank you in advance for helping to make our school a safer place for all. SMOOTHIE SALE ALL Kindergarten to Grade 6 students are able to purchase a smoothie EVERY Wednesday upon their arrival at school (8:45 am). Smoothie sales will end at 8:50. If you would like to purchase a smoothie you need to be in the school by 8:45 to be able to get to class on time. Regular Smoothie (16 oz) $4 Half Smoothie (8 oz) $2 Regular Smoothie with Reusable Mug/Cup $3.50 *Please consider sending a reusable mug with your student to help us cut down on waste and cost. 6 Smoothie Punch Card $20 A Punch Card can be purchased at any Smoothie Sale and will be sent home with your student when it is used up. Smoothies contain whole fruits, whole vegetables, and water. We hope your student enjoys this nutritious option at WAS! Regular: $4 ($3.50 with re-usable go-mug brought from home)

Students that achieve perfect attendance will receive a gift from Miss Slocombe. S. R. C. Elections The S.R. C. will be holding elections for the executive on September 18 th. These positions are available to the students in grades 5 & 6. Students in grades 4, 5 & 6 will be casting their votes on September 18 th. There will be a meeting for all students interested in running for one of the executive positions on Tuesday, September 8 10:30 in room 16. The campaign will begin Sept. 9 th ending with the election on the 18 th. Room reps will be elected after the Executive has been chosen. Have a great year! SERVERY NEWS To encourage all students of WAS to continue to drink milk with their lunches; the SCC is pleased to announce a milk punch-card program. The cost for one student punch card is $15.00 for 20 milk servings; this works out to $0.75 per milk. This is a great deal with awesome health benefits, (including making it easier for parents to locate change in the morning for lunches!) Punch cards will be available at the school office. The cards will remain in the servery where the students can simply go down and pick up their milk. When the card is empty it will be given to the student so parents know when to refill! This year our school will be offering ONLY juice and milk for sale. The price list for individual servings is: Milk (white or chocolate) $1.00 Juice box (variety of 100% juice flavours) $1.00

4 ROAD RUNNER NEWS Cross Country Another season of cross country running has begun! Cross country is open to students in grades 4-6. Students run 2 or 3 km depending on their age. We have many returning runners and are happy to welcome many new ones as well. Practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays with a few exceptions. Our meet will be held on Thursday, September 17 th at the Rosetown Golf and Country club. We will also travel to Outlook, Biggar and the district meet, which is yet to be determined this year. We look forward to another successful season. Mrs. Hingston Ms. Burton Ms. Gilchrist Mrs. Wiebe SCHOOL COMMUNITY COUNCIL W.A.S. staff with the support of the SCC will be holding a Meet the Staff/Welcome Back to School Bar-B-Que on Tuesday, September 15 th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00p.m. At this time we welcome all parents and students to come for a FREE burger, juice or water, and a cookie. At approximately 6:00 we will convene in the gymnasium for a short assembly where the staff will be introduced. Then staff will leave for their classrooms ready to meet you in person. Hope to see you there! ELECTRONIC DEVICES AT SCHOOL In the past few years there has been an increase in students bringing handheld games, Ipods, and cell phones to school. The presence of cameras and internet capability on some of these devices raises concerns of privacy, etc. At school we cannot guarantee the safety of these devices so we ask that parents play a role in determining the necessity of having these devices at school. If students bring them to school we ask that they remain discreetly in the student s backpack or in a safe place determined by the student s classroom teacher until after school. As the use of technology increases there may be opportunities for students to use their own electronic devices in classrooms special arrangements will be made for such use, however the school will not be responsible for loss or damage. No electronics will be allowed on the playground. Thank you for your cooperation. PLAYGROUND In an effort to ensure all students safety, all students have been told to go home immediately upon dismissal after school. Students are welcome to return to the playground after they have been home and made arrangements with their parents. Our plan is to keep everyone safe. KINDERGARTEN AND GRADE ONE BIKES All parents of kindergarten and grade one children need to be aware that children in this age group are not allowed to bring their bicycles to school. This rule is in place to ensure the safety and security of the children and applies to all K Grade 1 students even if accompanied by a parent. We encourage parents to reinforce this rule at home and if they wish to accompany their children to school in the morning that they enjoy a nice walk together. Your cooperation is very much appreciated and will help keep the children safe.

5 Code of Conduct WAS s Code of Conduct was developed to help provide a safe, positive learning environment for everyone. With that in mind, every year students and staff learn the Code and what it means. This is also referred to when discipline issues arise. Our school will be using this Code in monthly assemblies lead by buddy groups in the school. Every student and staff member will sign a pledge to follow our Code of Conduct which will be on display in our hallway. A copy of the Code is included at the back of this newsletter, and is also available on the website. KIDS SPORT Attached to the newsletter is a KidSport application form. KidSport is designed to assist families financially in order that their child (ren) can participate in sports. We are very fortunate to have such a program in our community. More applications are available at the office if you require one at some point during the school year. STUDENTS ARRIVING AT SCHOOL A reminder that supervision begins at 8:45 a.m. at the school. For safety reasons we ask that students do not arrive at the school prior to that time. If you have special circumstances on a particular day, please call the school in advance so that we can accommodate your needs. Thank you. W.A.S. IS A NUT AWARE SCHOOL Just a friendly reminder W.A.S. is a Nut Aware School. We have some students and staff members who are allergic to nuts and/or peanuts. We encourage parents not to send these products to school, but if you forget, a room will be provided where students can eat their nut products, wash their hands, and then return to their regular classrooms. Thanks for your assistance in making W.A.S. a safe place for all of us. FCC FOOD DRIVE WAS will once again be participating in the Annual Drive Away Hunger food collection which will take place from October 13 th 21 st. Students will be asked to bring non-perishable food to the school. This will later be taken to our local food bank. SCHOOL COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING The SCC will be meeting on Tuesday, Sept.29th at 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. Over the past three years our school collected 2000 lbs. of nonperishable food which went directly to our Rosetown Food Bank! VIDEO SURVELLANCE Video surveillance cameras are installed in various locations on the outside of the school. The cameras are connected to the Sun West School Division computer system and will be checked when necessary.

6 Tips To Help Your Child with Math 1. Play games together. Sing counting songs such as "One, Two Buckle My Shoe". Play Hopscotch it's a counting game! There are lots of games where you count, such as Snakes and Ladders, Dominoes, Crazy Eights and Candyland. Show them math can be fun and exciting. Play family games to add excitement to math activities, like chess or checkers or games in the car such as math bingo or adding license plate numbers. Lots of board games need math such as Junior Monopoly or play card games such as Uno. 2. Computers + math = fun. Every child at WAS has an account with Mathletics. It is a great online math program that the school division has subscribed to. Students will need to know their username and password. There are also super websites that have fun math games. Do an Internet search for other sites. 3. Start Easy and Work Up! Once they have got the hang of counting by 1s, introduce skip counting, such as counting by 2s and 5s. Try going forward and backward. Try starting at a number other than the first in the pattern. 4. Connect math to daily life. Let your kids know the importance of math in day-to-day living. Talk about the ways you use math in your job and around the house. Show them a tax form or how you pay the bills. Ask them how they used math during the day. 5. Practice mental math using coins. For example, show that a certain item costs a certain amount and ask what coins are needed to pay for it. Sask Reads Pamphlet (Submitted by Shari Martin, Superintendent of Education) Schools with primary grades received brochures with ways parents can support reading at home. This pamphlet was created provincially and is being rolled out in every school division in Saskatchewan as a support for our ESSP Provincial reading Hoshin. As part of the provincial and division focus on improving reading, Sun West families are receiving the Saskatchewan Reads brochure "Pause, Prompt, Praise" as a support for promoting and strengthening reading at home. Reading is an essential skill that determines future success in life. By working together, home and school, we can ensure students who are learning to read will have a firm foundation to base their future learning. In addition to the pamphlet, Sun West has begun a parent tool kit focusing on supporting reading. It can be found under the Families tab on the Sun West School division home page ** All families in Walter Aseltine School should have already received a copy of this pamphlet. 7 WAS has begun a new year of in motion. Every day all staff and students walk at 12:42 until 1:00. This break has proven to be very beneficial in getting everyone ready for the afternoon's work. The community is invited to come and walk with us at any time. A student leadership team consisting of 4 grade 5 students and 4 grade 6 students will lead the school doing movement activities on days when we cannot get outside.
