Welcome! Centre Avenue Information Session Design changes for pedestrian and bicycle improvements along Centre Avenue 1 Design Changes for Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements
Project Objectives: To improve pedestrian and cycling connections for users of all ages and abilities on Centre Avenue To enhance overall community connectivity between the regional pathway system and key destinations on Centre Avenue Opportunity to add street improvements This project aligns with the following: Need to complete top lift paving on Center Ave. Community Vision, Principals and Themes Active Transportation Plan - Draft Future growth in the downtown and North Okotoks Centre Avenue is identified as a key North/ South connector 2 Design Changes for Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements
Two options were considered to improve pedestrian and bicycle connections on Centre Avenue. Based on public feedback, Option 1 was selected as the preferred option. Option 1: Multi-Use Pathway (Preferred) Option 2: Cycle Track Example: multi-use pathway in Ottawa Example: Cycle track in Seattle A multi-use pathway is a shared facility with pedestrians and cyclists. This type of shared space can create conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists. Conflicts also exist between motorists and cyclists at intersections. 3 Design Changes for Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements A cycle track is a physically separated on-street facility for cyclists. This type of space can minimizes conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists, and between cyclists and motorists
North Section Option 1: Multi-Use Pathway (Preferred) M ILL Option 2: Cycle Track M IG AN ILL A roundabout at Milligan Drive is being considered as a future improvement DR IG AN DR Redesign right turn to slow motorists as they enter Centre Avenue The carriageway can remain the same with the wide Right Of Way available Shared multi-use pathway on west side On-street cycle track on both sides to create separation for cyclists from pedestrians and motorists OKOTOKS DR Median smaller due to space restrictions LOCK CR Wider sidewalks provided on both sides ALCOCK ST CENTRE AVE CENTRE AVE ARDIEL DR Wider sidewalks on the east side ALCOCK CL LOCK CR ALCOCK CL ALCOCK ST Number of car lanes will remain the same. 5 Middle Section Option 1: Multi-Use Pathway (Preferred) Option 2: Cycle Track CENTRE CRT CENTRE CRT Wider sidewalks on the east side Two multi-use pathways to accommodate bicycles & pedestrians Multi-use pathway added on the west side for pedestrian connection next to the wall CRESCENT ST W. CRESCENT ST W. ELMA ST ELMA ST ELMA ST ELMA ST A realignment of Elma Street to create more natural pedestrian crossing is being proposed 5 Design Changes for Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements
South Section Option 1: Multi-Use Pathway (Preferred) ELIZABETH ST Option 2: Cycle Track ELIZABETH ST MCRAE ST DAGGATT ST Revised curb line to allow for wider sidewalk space Able to maintain curb line with cycle track on street Parking removed on west side but maintained on east side Parking removed on both sides SOUTH RAILWAY ST SOUTH RAILWAY ST Change curb radii to slow speed of motorists 6 Design Changes for Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements MCRAE ST DAGGATT ST
