1 In This Section Ergonomics In This Section ack Supports Wrist Supports ategories of Ergonomics Flexible ack Supports More comfortable and breathable than rigid supports Flexible supports still allow for some movement when tightened, yet are easily loosened and kept at the right location by using the suspenders. Stays are used to keep the support stiffer when tightened and to separate the fabric when bending over and sitting down Suspenders are common to most flexible back supports to keep product on body in-between lifts. Suspenders also help employees keep the back support on their body throughout the day. Rigid ack Supports Gives workers greater restriction from bending at the waist Less comfortable than most flexible supports Since rigid supports are so restrictive, some feel that employees might think they can lift more than they really should Wrist Wraps Designed to give light support to the wrist without the use of plastic or aluminum stays. Wraps use only elastic and fabric and attach using Velcro. Wrist Supports Supports typically loop around the thumb to help keep the support in the correct location, helping prevent flexion and/or extension of the wrist area Many of these products use flexible stays for added support Neoprene styles give soothing warmth and compression Wrist races These braces offer the highest level of protection/stabilization of the wrist, as they use a very rigid hard plastic or aluminum stay to immobilize the area of concern races are normally viewed as the least comfortable and most difficult to work in Normally used by individuals with advanced stages of arpal Tunnel Syndrome who need full immobilization of the wrist area Elbow Supports The styles that come with a pad help to concentrate the pressure directly on the extensor muscle area. They also provide more comfort and support, without restriction. Other styles provide even pressure around the entire forearm and the injured area Neoprene provides soothing warmth and compression Knee Pads Designed for most trades which require working on your knees from time to time Pads help to cushion the weight of your body on this susceptible joint Some styles have a flat surface to keep you from wobbling, others have curved plastic cap to allow the rocking motion Elbow Supports omfort Mats Knee Pads How an arpal Tunnel Syndrome e Prevented? Keep your wrist in a neutral position void using your wrist in a flexed, extended or twisted position for a long period of time. Minimize repetition void repetitive motions or positions for extended periods of time. lso avoid holding objects in the same manner for a long time. Rest your hands When performing any task, give your hands brief rests. When possible, alternate hands, positions or tasks. Watch your grip Use your whole hand and all fingers when grabbing or lifting an object. Use less bulky hand protection where possible without sacrificing the level of protection. Reduce speed and force llow your wrist time between tasks to recover from the stress. Reducing the speed and force of any repetitive motion helps your wrist to recover. Using power tools when possible also helps to reduce force. Exercise Performing simple flexion and extension exercise may help strengthen muscles, as well as relieve stress ack Support asics ack supports increase intra-abdominal pressure and thereby support and take pressure off the spine If the worker bends too much at the waist, the back support will resist and tend to dig into his ribs, causing discomfort significant number of low back pain problems attributed to sudden unexpected loads could be avoided by wearing a properly fitted back support snugly around the hips. To size back supports, you must measure the widest part of the hips/waist with clothes on. Do not rely on pants size. ack supports should only be tightened to perform the lift. When not actively lifting, back supports should be kept loose. 239
