The section must be carefully reviewed and edited by the Architect to meet the requirements of the project and local building code. Coordinate this section with other specification sections and the Drawings. Delete all Specifier Notes after editing this section. Verification Samples: Submit 2 manufacturer s full-size samples of natural stone for each pattern specified. 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Supplier s Qualifications: Supplier regularly engaged, for preceding 10 years, in the supply of natural stone of similar type to that specified. Specifier Notes: Include a mock-up if the project size or quality warrant taking such a precaution. Edit mock-ups as required. Delete mock-ups if not required. B. Mock-Ups: Provide a 4 x 4 mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application Workmanship. 1. Finish areas designated by Architect. 4 2. Do not proceed with remaining Work until Workmanship, color, and sheen are approved by Architect. 3. Refinish mock-up area as required to produce acceptable Work. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Delivery: Accept stone masonry units on site. Inspect for damage. B. Storage: 1. Store materials in accordance with manufacturer s instructions. 2. Keep materials clean, dry and protected against dampness, freezing and foreign matter. 3. Do not stack pallets. C. Handling: Protect materials during handling and installation to prevent damage or contamination. 1.7 PROJECT ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS A. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install natural veneer stone under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's limits. B. Hot and Cold Weather Requirements: 1. Cold Weather Requirements: Comply with recommendations of IMIAWC (CW). 2. Hot Weather Requirements: Comply with recommendations of IMIAWC (HW). PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIAL SUPPLIER A. ASTM C 616; quartz-based dimension stone. 1. Stone shall be sound, durable, and free of spalls, cracks, open seams, pits or other defects that would likely impair structural integrity. < FILL IN TYPE OF STONE>; No substitutions. B. 5 C. Mortar Color: Selected by Architect. 2.3 ACCESSORIES Specifier Notes: Edit the following two paragraphs as required. Delete if not required. Specify building paper with wood sheathing. A. Building Paper: ASTM D 226, No. 30 asphalt saturated felt. B. House Wrap: Air/vapor barrier polymetric membrane as specified in Section. C. Setting Buttons and Shims: Lead or plastic. D. Joint Sealants and Joint Fillers: As specified in Section ( ). 2.4 MORTAR A. Mortar: 1. Cement: ASTM C Lime: ASTM C Sand: ASTM C 144, natural or manufactured. 4. Color Pigments: ASTM C 979, mineral oxide. 5. Water: Potable. 6. Pre-Packaged Latex-Portland Cement Mortar: ANSI A Specifier Notes: Specify clear or semi-gloss sealer. Delete sealer if not required. B. Sealer: Water-based silane or siloxane masonry sealer, [clear] [semi-gloss]. C. Mortar Mixes: Specifier Notes: Specify mortar mixes for grouted joints or jointless dry-stack installation. 1. Grouted Joints: a. Mix Mortar: ASTM C 270, Type S. b. Add color pigments to mortar in accordance with pigment manufacturer s instructions. 2. Jointless Dry-Stack Installation: a. 6 PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Section Execution: Verification of existing conditions before starting Work, B. Verification of Conditions: Verify that field measurements, conditions are as required, and ready to receive Work. 1. Verify that field conditions are acceptable and are ready to receive stone masonry. 2. Verify that related items provided under other sections are properly sized and located. 3. Verify that built-in items are in proper location, and ready for roughing into stone masonry Work. C. Report in writing to Architect prevailing conditions that will adversely affect satisfactory execution of the Work of this Section. Do not proceed with Work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. D. By beginning Work, Contractor accepts conditions and assumes responsibility for correcting unsuitable conditions encountered at no additional cost to the Owner. E. Onsite visits required by supplier every weeks. 3.2 PREPARATION 3.3 WEEPS A. Establish lines, levels and coursing. Protect from disturbance. B. Clean stone before erection. Do not use wire brushes or implements which can mark or damage exposed surfaces. B. Clean sawn surfaces of rust stains and iron particles. C. Provide temporary bracing during installation of stone masonry Work as required. A. Provide weeps in stone masonry veneer at not less than 24 inches or more than 32 inches on center horizontally. 7 A. Weep ropes, wicks or tubes not permitted. 3.3 CAVITY-WALL DRAINAGE SYSTEM A. Preparation: Clean surfaces to receive flashing of excess mortar, dirt, and moisture and other debris immediately before installation. B. Installation: Install continuous flashing membrane system in accordance with manufacturer's published instructions and the following. 1. Do not permit mortar to drop or accumulate into cavity air space or to plug weeps. Clean cavity space of mortar between each lift. a. Extend flashings horizontally at foundation walls, above ledge, shelf angles, and lintels and bottom of walls, including window and door head lintels. 2. Apply two (2) continuous beads of adhesive on clean sill parallel to building lines approximately 1 inch from exterior edge of sill and 2 inch on center. 3. Determine height of flashing; strike horizontal line. Apply full bead of adhesive to substrate 1 inch below top of flashing. 4. Set flashing in sill adhesive and turn flashing up minimum 8 inches. Roll flashing and termination bar assembly into sill adhesive and up wall; securing assembly with screws provided with System. 5. Apply full bead of adhesive to top of termination bar. 6. Lap end joints minimum 6 inches and seal watertight using adhesive provided. a. Turn flashing, fold, and seal at corners, bends, and interruptions. C. Termination of System: 1. Terminate vertical membrane with continuous termination bar secured at 6 inches on-center. 2. Prepare lap joints as directed by manufacturer. Apply adhesive and lap flexible flashing a minimum of 6 inches. D. Inspection: 1. Make sure flexible flashing is installed in continuous manner with no voids, or punches. Repair punches prior to starting masonry Work. 2. Edge dams at horizontal termination of flashing shall be well defined and secured to substrate. 8 3. Drainage mat weep tabs shall be laid flat. 3.5 WALL TIES A.Wall Ties: 1. Secure adjustable wall ties to wall panels and embed into stone masonry veneer at 24 inches on center max vertically and at 36 inches on center max horizontally. 2. Place at maximum 3 inches on center each way around perimeter of openings, within 12 inches of openings. 3.6 INSTALLATION A. Cut stone at site to produce clean faces. B. Cut stone units to fit opening dimensions and perimeter conditions. C. Wet absorptive stone in preparation for placement to minimize moisture suction from mortar. D.Arrange stone pattern to provide color uniformity and minimize visual variations, and provide a uniform blend of stone unit sizes. E. Arrange stone coursing for specified stone blend with consistent joint width. 3.7 CUTTING AND FITTING A. Cut and fit for conduit, sleeves and inserts. Coordinate with other sections of Work to provide correct size, shape and location. A. Obtain approval prior to cutting or fitting masonry Work not indicated or where appearance or strength of masonry Work may be impaired. 3.8 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Section Quality Control: Contractor Quality Control Representative shall perform contractor quality control inspections. 1. 9 2. Inspect thru-wall flashing, laps, corners, intersections and terminations for watertight installation. 3. Document preparatory, initial and follow-up inspection in Contractor's Test and Inspection Reports. 4. Test and Inspection Reports shall be available to Architect upon request. B. Correct deficiencies in products and installation found not to be in compliance with Contract Documents. 3.9 CLEANING A. Clean Work. B. Clean soiled surfaces with cleaning solution. C. Use non-metallic tools in cleaning operations. PROTECTION OF FINISHED WORK A. Protect finished Work. B. Without damaging completed Work, provide protective boards at external corners which may be damaged by construction activities.
