2 Year 10 Retreat Kintbury, Monday March 23rd Thursday 26th March 2015 Dear parents/carers, Your son/daughter has a place attending a residential retreat at St. Cassian s, Kintbury from Monday March 23rd Thursday 26th March The trip will be for 3 nights and we will be travelling to Kintbury by coach with three members of staff accompanying the students. We will be leaving school around 12pm on Monday and returning to school at approximately 5.30pm on Thursday 26th. Guidance from St Cassians is as follows Please bring a towel and toilet requisites. Bed linen is provided. Please bring a coat and suitable footwear for outdoor walking. Please bring any musical instrument you play (other than a piano!). The centre has keyboards, guitars, flute, clarinet, saxophone, drum machine and tenor recorder. We encourage you not to bring ipods and mobile phones etc. We are hoping that this can prove to be a rewarding experience for all the pupils who attend the retreat. 3 St. Cassian's Centre at Kintbury is a residential retreat centre, owned by the De La Salle Brothers and run by a mixed community of Brothers lay staff, gapyear volunteers and support staff. It was founded in 1975 to provide retreat experiences for young people

4 ST. CASSIAN S CENTRE Wallingtons Road, Kintbury, Hungerford, RG17 9SR A message to students from the Kintbury Centre We are pleased that you are coming to St. Cassian's Centre, Kintbury. We will do everything we can to welcome you and make you feel at home, so that your time with us will be as pleasant and profitable as possible. St. Cassian's Centre belongs to the De La Salle Brothers (a Religious Order of Brothers founded in France 300 years ago by St. John Baptist De La Salle). A Retreat at St. Cassian's is run by The Kintbury Team, a group of people who live and work at St. Cassian's; the Team includes some younger members who spend a year here, usually before or after University. Although we want your stay here to be relaxing, and it will include some free time, it is a Retreat. We hope that our programme will help you: To get to know and understand yourself better, and to appreciate yourself more. To see better how you get on with the other people in your life, and to improve this. To make new friends with students from the other schools that will be here with you. To appreciate more the place of God in our world and in your life. The programme is Christian in content and it will include: Celebrating our faith together, through prayer and worship (usually the celebration of the Eucharist). The presentation of ideas for you to reflect on and share. Working in groups.

We encourage you not to bring with you radios, CD players, personal stereos, ipods and mobile phones. Our Retreats at St. Cassian's ask everyone to give of their best, but we can assure you that they are worthwhile experiences. Each year about 1,500 young people aged spend three days at Kintbury on a School Retreat. These young people come from over 70 schools across England and Wales, and almost without exception they value the opportunity they have for a few days space in their busy lives to look at what really matters to them. Indeed, many return for a second or third visit. We have every confidence that, if you enter fully into what we have to offer, you will not be disappointed. We look forward to meeting you. Comments made by a Cardinal Langley student who went to Kintbury: Kintbury was an eye opener for me. It made me realise things about myself that I would have never otherwise considered. It taught me how much I was appreciated and valued. I think that the most special thing to me was the friends I made. It was amazing to meet so many people who by the end of the retreat felt as we had known each other forever. I still keep in touch with these friends every day. Kintbury is a special place and is something I will never forget.

For each individual it must have a different meaning, since no one person s life-pilgrimage is the same as that of another, but many would agree that coming to Kintbury has touched them deeply.

7 Itinerary Departure Students will travel to Kintbury via coach along with a small group of students from De La Salle St Helen s. Students will be in school periods 1-3. They will be leaving for Kintbury at approximately 12pm. Students will be allowed to come to school in non-uniform clothing. Students will arrive at Kintbury around 5.00pm when the retreat will begin. Students are to meet up in the dining room on Monday at am prompt. RETURN: Estimated return time will be Thursday around 5.30pm depending on traffic. Please arrange to picked up your son/daughter or make sure staff are aware that a student is making their own way home. Students will contact parents on their way home to confirm arrival. In case your son/daughter is ill on the day and cannot attend, please ring school to inform us as soon as possible. Students will need to bring some food and drinks for the journey. There will be a comfort stop but remember that food bought at motorway services can be expensive. There is a tuck shop opened each evening so some money will be needed for that. All meals are provided. Any dietary requirements should be indicated on the form filled in by parents. Bed linen is provided Clothes: remember students are only away just a few days and that they will have to carry their case. We are not going to a beauty contest! Obviously, alcohol, tobacco and illegal substances are strictly not permitted. We reserve the right to search any bag if we suspect students might have some of these items. Students are politely asked to respect the time for retirement at night. There is a full programme of activities planned and we need students to fully participate. Staff also need a good night s rest. If students are under medication, this should be indicated in the medical form. Put it into a clear plastic bag labelled with your son/daughter s name and give it to Mrs Hardman. We look forward to sharing the Kintbury experience with you and hope all students have a wonderful time.
