Location: Leicester Grade: 1 Salary range: 35,600-37,600 Job holder: TBC Date: July Job purpose To manage the delivery of IOSH s media relations strategy and campaign communications, being responsible for messaging, proactive and reactive media engagement and campaigns that position IOSH in line with the corporate strategy across multiple stakeholder audiences around the world. 3 Key result areas Strategy, planning and control 1. To develop IOSH s media relations strategy, working with Head of Communications and Media and Managing Editor to deliver policies and practices that support our corporate strategy and narrative, integrated marketing strategy and business objectives in an international context 2. Supporting internal clients (IOSH departments) and volunteer members with media plans identifying target audiences, key messages, tactics and resources to publicise their activities and be accountable for raising their profile through earned, owned and shared media channels 3. The job holder will identify main client groups and audiences for a complex organisation and determine suitable blends of communication, identifying appropriate channels and creating relevant, engaging content 4. Support the content marketing strategy with intelligent planning of media support at events, including thorough briefs for photographers and the gathering of positive stories about our members 5. Oversee the measurement, monitoring and evaluation of our media outcomes, managing the relationship with our media evaluation supplier and working with our PR and media assistant to produce monthly reports containing KPI data and analysis 6. Work with IOSH s Policy department and campaign communications co-ordinator to devise and deliver effective, cross-divisional campaigns to raise awareness and effect positive change on issues in safety and health 7. Support the Head of Communications and Media in managing the reputational risk of external communications, ensuring risk management is in-built in media planning and 1

2 that you are prepared for crisis communications 8. Expand IOSH s media activity globally in line with IOSH s international strategy, raising the Institution s profile overseas taking into account cultural sensitivities Relationships 9. To develop relationships with key international, national and specialist media contacts, with expertise from staff, the OSH profession and third party specialists to position the Institution as the go-to organisation for expert commentary on safety and health issues 10. To manage relationships with media office counterparts of key, strategic stakeholders, particularly in Government, to ensure IOSH is fully prepared to comment on important announcements on policy 11. Develop a close working relationship with the IOSH Magazine editorial team, supporting the member publication in being the first to break the important stories in safety and health and identifying topics for insightful features Media engagement reactive and proactive 12. Produce swift and accurate responses, with reference to IOSH position statements, that deliver compelling, newsworthy messages as important news stories break and issues arise 13. Identify opportunities for proactive media engagement by monitoring the news agenda, promoting the positive story of health and safety to counter negative perceptions of the profession in sections of the media 14. As senior news writer, create corporate messages delivered by key spokespeople in keynote speeches, broadcast interviews and print news stories, ensuring they are on message and set a positive tone for debate in health and safety 15. To oversee the development and recruitment of a panel of IOSH spokespeople and writers (both staff and volunteers), delivering to them media training and briefing for interview opportunities Membership communications 16. Accountable for the communication of IOSH news and campaigns to our wider membership through the IOSH News pages of our magazine, social media channels and the news and campaigns section of our website 17. To develop our framework for working with IOSH s Networks to increase the profile of IOSH and its members through local and specialist media, while managing the reputational risk of deploying volunteers to speak on behalf of IOSH Internal communications 18. Manage the delivery of effective communications to keep staff informed of activities across the organisation, and to promote initiatives aimed at improving the work culture at IOSH General management 1. To manage the workload, objectives and skills development of staff, providing quality assurance and on-the-job training to continually improve media planning and handling 2. Lead on the implementation of a service level agreement and set of processes, including media plans, press release templates and briefing documents which support ISO Support the Head of Communications and Media in researching, selecting, and managing key suppliers, building mutually beneficial and value for money relationships 4. To participate in any appropriate working groups and internal teams to initiate and support activities relevant to the development of our PR and campaigns activity 5. To carry out any other duties within the remit of this role, requested by the Head of Communications and Media 6. To be an integral part of the Marketing Department and working closely with other teams at IOSH 2

3 4 Qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills and training Qualifications A degree or equivalent level qualification in a relevant subject, for example but not exclusively: English, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or Communications essential. NCTJ, CAM or equivalent experience of writing for publications on political, workplace or business matters - essential Full member of Chartered Institute for Public Relations (CIPR) or equivalent desirable. Experience (all essential) Proven experience of delivering business or professional issues-related national or international media campaigns with positive outcomes and results Significant experience of working as a senior journalist or in a position of responsibility in an in-house media team, PR or full service agency Experience of working with social media channels to achieve campaign outcomes and understanding of their effectiveness Experience of producing budgets and budgetary management Experience of writing clear, accurate, and concise copy for different audiences and the ability to communicate technical and/or complex issues to a non-technical audience Experience of delivering media training and briefing spokespeople for media opportunities Experience of evaluating media coverage, for impact Proven experience of working effectively with national, specialist and regional journalists and media organisations Proven experience of managing a team with external suppliers providing specialist input and support Experience (desirable) Experience of working for a charity, a professional body or an organisation with branches or networks that take part in media activity Knowledge (all essential) To have an in-depth knowledge of contemporary media channels To have an in-depth knowledge of how an integrated approach, using a blend of media tactics, can support business and communication objectives To have a range of contacts in international, national, specialist and business media To have a good knowledge of media monitoring, measurement and evaluation as a way of informing a media relations strategy To have a good knowledge of the broad range of content options, particularly digital, that can enrich communications to target audiences Skills (all essential) To have excellent verbal and written communication skills To have excellent project management skills To have excellent organisational and analytical skills To have excellent team leadership skills To have excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills IT literate with experience of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, 3

4 PowerPoint and relevant specialist media liaison software 5 Job context The job-holder will lead on IOSH s media relations and campaign communications, being the key contact for media enquiries and campaign queries. The job-holder will deliver and convey corporate messages through earned, owned and social media channels to facilitate and promote the IOSH brand and reputation. With IOSH s public relations an integral part of the Institution s marketing strategy, the job-holder will be able to communicate effectively through our own media channels with internal stakeholders (membership, volunteers and staff), and through media outlets to external audiences, such as employers, policy-makers, the general public and the wider safety and health profession. The job-holder will be responsible for a well-run, responsive and agile PR and campaigns team. The job-holder will be working closely and seamlessly with other Marketing disciplines and comanagers will be a constant feature of day-to-day operations to ensure IOSH consistently achieves high standard on-brand communications. 6 Job dimensions The job-holder will provide leadership on all earned media developments, undertaking internal and external briefings as required to ensure IOSH is positioned in a good light, mitigating reputational risk and damage to the brand. The job-holder will be responsible for managing sizable PR and campaigns projects, maintaining consistent levels of dialogue with the business and expected to provide a quality service to internal customers. The job-holder will be required to work with a wide range of internal clients, external suppliers, members and volunteers and will therefore need to have proven ability to build consensus, negotiate, problem solve and work effectively across multi-disciplinary teams. The job-holder will be required to plan and organise work on a daily basis in such a manner that takes care of all the contingencies and which may require out of hours working to meet deadlines. The job-holder will have a high-profile position at IOSH and be required to demonstrate excellent leadership skills by leading a team to deliver PR and campaign activities against time, quality and cost criteria. The job-holder will directly manage a team of three (two media officers and a campaign communications co-ordinator) and be required to forward plan, set team objectives, manage workflow and monitor. 7 Complexity and creativity The job requires good communication, negotiation and facilitation skills with the ability to focus on the long-term public profile of the business, while also implementing tactical PR and campaign plans that meet the immediate requirements of the business. The job-holder must be capable of delivering complex multi-faceted media projects and able to 4

5 demonstrate rational, logical thinking and decision-making. The role demands a high level of understanding of the IOSH s strategic objectives and a high level of professional expertise to ensure the Institution can take advantage of media opportunities and to steer the business through complex and potentially damaging media exposure. The role requires creativity and foresight in anticipating, interpreting, mitigating, managing and resolving risk to the business in the most efficient way. The job-holder will provide content for IOSH web sites and work with the web team to assess and resolve any technical challenges in displaying all content. At the same time, he or she will be cognisant of the IOSH brand guidelines and ensure all PR and campaign outputs are on-brand. The job-holder will need to possess the ability to manage multiple and often competing media opportunities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. 8 Decision making The job-holder will need to ensure the sound management of all PR and campaign activity from planning to evaluation, managing priorities against resource and budget and assessing business impact in a fast-paced environment. The job-holder will decide on task allocation and resource leveling within the PR and campaigns team, ranking and changing priorities as required to achieve business objectives, utilising external agencies to enhance the reach and impact of campaigns. The job-holder will develop all necessary plans (annual/quarterly, procurement, and communication) and continuously update activity plans to ensure timely execution of media activities and well managed expectations. The job-holder where appropriate will determine TORs, briefing notes, activity reports, contracts and all other documents in relation to the implementation of PR and campaign activity, and ensure their compliance with IOSH rules, regulations and procedures. The job-holder will support the Head of Communications and Media in continually reviewing a range of suppliers and contracts to ensure IOSH secures good value for money and quality as appropriate for a predetermined level of service. 9 Key internal and external contacts Internal contacts The job-holder will have extensive contact with executive and senior managers across the business, so building resilient relationships with this body of people is key. There will be significant interaction and discussion on a weekly basis with the management team within the Marketing Department and their teams, including the Marketing Director, Head of Communications and Media, Web Manager and Promotions, Advertising and Design Manager. The job-holder will also have contact with volunteers and members in a wide variety of roles, particularly with events and in consultation situations i.e. working with the volunteer Marketing Member Advisory Panel, and where the resolution of escalated problems is a priority. 5

6 There will be significant contact with the IOSH Executive Director and Presidential teams. External contacts The job-holder will have contact with a range of suppliers and media and campaign stakeholders, including but not limited to: Service suppliers Journalists, editors and broadcasters International PR support agencies IOSH Magazine editor Campaign partners 6
