1 Thursday 4 February 2016 A very warm welcome to all our families who are joining us for the first time this year, and also welcome back to those of you who joined us in We hope you had a fantastic break together and are all ready for an exciting year. School calendar If you have not visited the school website in some time, please have a look Upcoming events and key dates are available online. Absences/Start Times A reminder that school starts at 8:55am. The classrooms are open from 8.30am and it is helpful if your child is at school in time for them to settle and prepare for the day. Please be aware that teachers use the time prior to 8:30am for class preparation and children are not allowed at school before this time, unless they are in Before School Care. If your child is absent please phone or the school office. Phone or If your child arrives after 8.55am they need to collect a late slip from the office. Please ensure that if your child needs to leave school early that they are signed out at the office. Communication We have a culture of open communication at Whangaparaoa School. If you have any questions or concerns about your child or the class programme please make an appointment to see your child s teacher. Should you feel your concern has not been resolved please contact the team leader. To make an appointment please contact us: A4 Nicola Winter and Kirsten Bell A3 Joanne Lourie T1 Emma Sharman T2 Libby Fletcher T4 Vicky Harvey

2 Our Learning This term our inquiry focus is Communities. We will be learning about people and agencies who help us in our home, school and local community. In week 11 we will be having a Visual Art week where the children will be working on a range of different experiences. Please let us know if you think you have any skills, interests or experiences related to our topics that you could contribute. English Our reading programmes consist of big books, poetry and daily guided reading sessions. Your child will bring home a book or poem most days to practise their reading skills at home. Please make sure your child has their bookbag and reader at school every day. For spelling we will be learning about the sounds of the English language and how to hear and record these. Your child will also bring home some high frequency words to learn. Our writing programme is about learning to organise our ideas and formulate a story to write. We will be learning to hear and record sounds in words and to put together simple sentences, as well as adding details to make our story interesting for the reader. Sharing experiences such as walks on the beach, fishing or visits to the park and discussing these as a family can be a great way to help your child come up with ideas to write about. Mathematics The Mathematics programme this term is Number based. The focus will be on developing number knowledge including number identification, sequencing and basic facts. The children will be learning different ways of adding and subtracting. We will also be teaching them many games to support their learning. Swimming Our swimming days this term will be: T1, T2, T4 - Tuesday and Thursday A3 and A4 - Monday and Wednesday Please make sure your child has togs and towel on their designated days. Ensure all clothing and towels are clearly named, including uniform so we can quickly resolve any clothing mixups and return unclaimed items. Swimming is part of our Physical Education curriculum and it is important that all children are encouraged to participate. Our focus will be on water confidence and water safety. It is also a fantastic opportunity to cool off on these long hot summer days.

3 Uniform During Term 1 a hat is compulsory for all outdoor activities and playtimes. Please ensure all items of your child s uniform are clearly named, especially hats. This ensures that should an item be misplaced it can quickly be returned to them. During the summer terms we recommend sunscreen is applied before coming to school in the morning. Black or navy shoes/sandals or trainers are the preferred footwear. Stationery If you did not purchase stationery at the One Stop Shop please make sure your child has all their stationery at school as soon as possible. If you did buy elsewhere please remember to call in to the office to purchase the whiteboard pack and handwriting book which are only available from school. There is also a small compulsory charge to cover shared items. Parent Help Parent help in the classroom is invaluable and once we have had time to set routines and get to know the children we will be looking for parents to assist on a regular basis. This may involve returning readers, gluing and preparing work, mounting art, making games or hearing children read. Sometimes we have tasks that can be done at home so if you are willing to help in this way please let your child s teacher know. Parent questionnaire To help us get to know your child, we would appreciate you taking the time to complete the attached questionnaire. Please return this to school by Friday 19 February. Home Learning Learning at home with your child should be a happy, fun time of around 10 minutes a day. This should be reinforcement of learning, a chance for them to practice their skills and celebrate with you. If you find your child is having difficulty with this at home please let your class teacher know. To begin with home learning will consist of reading and learning of basic sight words. To help foster the love of reading and to stimulate your child's imagination a bedtime story is a magical way to end the day. We look forward to sharing a happy, busy and productive year with you and your child. Kind regards Nicola Winter Team Leader Year One
