1 PE 615 Sports Medicine Enduring Understandings -Sports Medicine is the care and prevention of athletic injuries -Sports Medicine offers several different career paths -CPR and First Aide are essential life skills -Common injuries of the Ankle, Knee and Shoulder -Basic anatomy (muscles and functions) help form rehabilitation programs and evaluates sports injuries -Proper taping and or bracing helps performance -Nutrition influences daily activity Essential Questions -What is Sports Medicine -What are some of the different career paths in sports medicine -What is CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and Standard First Aide -Why is proper hygiene essential for First Aide -What are the skeletal landmarks of the Ankle, Knee, and Shoulder -What are the biomechanics of the Ankle, Knee, and Shoulder -What is the proper injury evaluation protocol? -How does Nutrition play such a key role in Sports Medicine Essential Knowledge -Athletic Trainers, Doctors, Physical Therapists, and Psychologist are some of the career paths in sports medicine -30 compressions/2 breaths is the proper ratio for CPR -Basic bony anatomical landmarks are essential for injury diagnosis and rehab -Joint mechanics are the key to diagnosing injuries -Return to play status is determined by strength and flexibility testing -Proper taping and or bracing helps performance and help secure joint support -Nutrition plays a key role in performance and rehabilitation -Caloric intake, proteins, and essential nutrients are key factors to nutrition
2 Knowledge Assessment -CPR and First Aid evaluation -Anatomical joint evaluation -Taping evaluation -Evaluate and diagnose common athletic injuries -Create a rehab program for different common athletic injuries -Nutrition test and Diet Assessment -Playing Jeopardy for recall of information (CPR and First Aid/Name of muscle and function/joint testing) Essential Skill -Student will be able to distinguish between the different members of a sports medical team -Students will be able to perform proper compressions for CPR -Students will be able to tape, brace, and splint -Students will be able to perform an anatomical joint evaluation on an Ankle, Knee, and Shoulder -Students will be able to test joint stability and strength -Students will be able to recognize common joint injuries Skill Assessment -CPR (Certification obtainable) -First Aide (Certification obtainable)
