4 CE - CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICIAN CE - CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICIAN Install, maintain and repair telephone and high-voltage and lowvoltage electrical power distribution networks, both overhead and underground. Splice and lay cables, erect poles, string wires and install transformers and distribution panels. Install, repair and maintain street lighting, fire alarm, public address, interoffice and telephone switchboard system. Install, maintain and repair interior wiring for lighting and electrical equipment. Work with batteries, electrical motors, relays, solenoids and switches. Operate electrical generators. 8 CM - CONSTRUCTION MECHANIC CM - CONSTRUCTION MECHANIC Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment failures. Repair and maintain diesel and gasoline engines. Adjust and repair ignition, fuel, electrical, hydraulic and steering. Maintain and repair chassis, frames and bodies. Work with hoisting and jacking equipment, power tools, measuring instruments, Gauges and meters. Lubricate equipment. Maintain and repair tires, batteries, breaks and valves. Perform shop management functions such as maintenance scheduling and spare parts inventory control. Requirements - ASVAB AR+MC+AS=158

11 EA - Engineering Aid Conduct location surveys for roads, airfields, pipelines, ditches, buildings, drainage structures and waterfronts construction. Prepare hydrographic, topographic and triangulation drawings and maps. Compute the volume of bulk materials (concrete, bituminous mixtures and earthwork) from drawings and specifications. Lay out all types of construction work. Operate and maintain various types of precision surveying and laboratory test instruments and equipment. Prepare architectural, mechanical, electrical and topographic drawings and sketches. Design grading and drainage systems. Conduct quality control inspections for all types of construction projects. Prepare equipment, manpower and material estimates from drawings and specifications. Prepare network analyses, charts and graphs. 14 EO - EQUIPMENT OPERATOR EO - EQUIPMENT OPERATOR Operate a wide variety of heavy-duty, self-propelled construction equipment for such projects as buildings construction, roadway construction and repair, pier construction, grading and excavation. Perform minor maintenance on this equipment to ensure safe, efficient operation. Serve as a member of a crane crew to rig cable assemblies and change attachments for various lifting and pile driving operations. Prepare operational reports on equipment. 17 SW STEELWORKER SW STEELWORKER Erect steel bridges,tanks,buildings, towers and pre-engineered structures. Fabricate, erect, install, fit, weld and bolt structural steel shapes, plates and the build-up sections used in heavy construction. Layout, fabricate and install sheet metal assemblies and systems. Perform welding and metal cutting operations. Required ASVAB Scores - ASVAB ASVAB AR+MC+AS=140

18 SW Fabricating, erecting, installing, fitting, welding and bolting structural steel shapes, plates and the built-up sections used in heavy construction Laying out, fabricating and installing sheet metal assemblies and systems Performing welding and metal cutting operations Installing and reinforcing steel in concrete structures Reading and interpreting blueprints and preparing sketches for projects Making estimates of materials, labor, and equipment requirements Credit Recommendations The American Council on Education recommends the following semester hour credits in the associate and vocational degree programs, 6 semester hours in welding, 3 semester hours in sheet metal design and fabrication, and 2 semester hours in blueprint reading. An AA of Construction Technology can be earned from Coastline Community College. Qualifications and Interests Steelworkers must be able to work with tools, equipment and machines that require manual dexterity and close teamwork. It is important they be resourceful, capable of doing detailed work and repetitive tasks and knowledge of algebra. Other helpful characteristics are curiosity and a good memory, writing and speaking skills, record keeping ability, good physical condition and stamina. Normal hearing is required. Working Environment SWs may work in a variety of conditions, independently or as members of a large team. Their many different duties may be performed in climates ranging from tropical to arctic. Opportunities Opportunities to enter the SW rating are excellent for qualified applicants. About 750 men and women work as Steelworkers in the Navy.

Build forms for concrete construction. Mix, place, and finish concrete. Operate concrete batch plants, portable concrete mixers and vibrators. Build wharves, bridges and other heavy timber structures. Interpret blueprints and prepare sketches for construction work. Make estimates of materials and labor required.
