1 Page 1 of 5 Dispute Resolution Doesn t Have To Be a Fire! Identifier MGT Expo 204 Effective Date January 2015 Class Length 1 hour 15 minutes Change Summary October 2014 December 2014 Module Developed Final review and Posting
2 Page 2 of 5 1. Lesson Plan Goals To discuss strategies for addressing conflicts or disputes without having to resort to suspensions and due process administrative reviews. In other words, seeing the smoke and putting out the fire before it causes significant damage. 2. Class Length 1 hour 15 minutes (Allow time for questions and discussion during this time.) 3. Instructor Requirements Advanced Management Instructor with approval from the SMA or SD. 4. Prerequisites None. The class is recommended for Regional, Area and Section Board and Staff and should be taken prior to the Due Process workshop. Starting in 2015, both this course and Due Process will be required to get the certifications formerly represented by the Dispute Resolution course. 5. Learning Objectives Recognition of potentially explosive situations Awareness of the tools available to deal with conflicts in an attempt to avoid having to limit, suspend or terminate the involvement of a Non-Executive Member from AYSO. 6. Materials/Equipment - Power Point Presentation (PPP) - Flip Chart - available at AYSO EXPOs. - Markers - Pencils - LCD Projector - Screen -- optional - Room Setup should be in rounds (round tables) - Laptop with Microsoft Office 2013 (presentation loaded) 7. Special Instructor Notes General A thorough review and practice of the PPP is necessary to fully comprehend the instructor notes, and especially the animations in the presentation. Without knowing when to click or
3 Page 3 of 5 advance the slides the PPP will not properly support the instructor s teaching process. This PPP only supports the instruction, and does not provide a full teaching experience. Instructors for this workshop should have a working knowledge of AYSO s policy and procedures as outlined in the Standard Regional Guidelines found in the AYSO Reference Book. The room setup for this workshop should be in rounds to enable the group activities to be interactive within each group. You should control how the participants set themselves to ensure there is a mix of volunteer positions at each table (try to seat one Executive Member per table) This class is designed to be very interactive. In many cases, the instructors will ask for responses from the participants before revealing some that are suggested. Be cognizant of the fact that the participants suggestions may be equally valid but if they are not, this should be discussed. There are a number of quotations interspersed through the PPP. They are designed to act as transitions between sections, and the instructor notes include a suggested transition sentence or thought to use. The group activity scenarios provided by the course participants should be simple and easily discussed. Watch your time during the main body of this workshop and adjust the number of the provided scenarios that are discussed to keep the workshop on time. Don t dwell on the numerous lists of suggestions or engage in long discussions about any particular point Make sure any unanswered questions due to lack of time, or lack of correct answers to the question, are written down along with who asked the question with their contact information. It will be the instructor s responsibility to acquire the correct answer(s) and contact those who asked the question(s). Please see the detailed PPP slide show instructions attached to this lesson plan. 8. PowerPoint Presentation Instructions - Slide 1: this slide should be up as attendees come into the course. Introduce yourself and co-instructors provide your instructor expertise on this topic - Slide 2-3: these slides are designed to explain the difference between this workshop and the Due Process Workshop. If Due Process is being given, make sure to say where and when. - Slide 4: Quotation show it, use the transition and move on. - Slide 5: no animations
4 Page 4 of 5 - Slide 6: Idea is to show that disputes are only a small part of AYSO, and Due Process reviews are even rarer. THIS SLIDE HAS SOUND! If there are any that weren t mentioned, highlight them. - Slide 11: Quickly click to advance the animation - Slide 12: Quotation show it, use the transition and move on. - Slide 13: Quickly click to advance the animation - Slide 14: Each bullet point appears after a click. - Slide 15: Quotation show it, use the transition and move on. - Slide 16: No animation - Slide 17: Quotation show it, use the transition and move on. - Slide 18: No animation - Slide 19: Each bullet point appears after a click. - Slide 20: Quotation show it, use the transition and move on. - Slide 21: Each bullet point appears after a click. - Slide 22: Quotation show it, use the transition and move on. - Slide 23: Each bullet point appears after a click. - Slide 24: Each bullet point appears after a click, alternating between Empathy and Sympathy - Slide 25: Use the scenario in the instructor notes - Slide 26: Quotation show it, use the transition and move on. - Slide 27: Group activity move the process along.
