1 Dear Friends and Collegues It is with great pleasure that we invite you to participate in the European Congress of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine, which will be held in Portugal from October 20th-22nd, Cascais, a sunny coastal town 30 km away from Lisbon, will be hosting the meeting. The event results from cooperation between 4 organisations working towards similar goals regarding animal behaviour and welfare: European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine (ECAWBM) Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law Veterinary Association (AWSELVA) European Society of Veterinary Clinical Ethology (ESVCE) Portuguese Association of Animal Behaviour Therapy and Welfare (PsiAnimal) The Congress aims to bring together individuals and organisations working in the fields of animal welfare science, ethics and law and veterinary behavioural medicine. It provides a unique opportunity for meeting and networking with a diverse range of experts, academics and professionals from all over the world, and for information sharing and learning about the most recent research developments. The programme includes plenary lectures by world-renowned speakers as well as peer-reviewed oral and poster presentations. This year Dr. Alain Boissy and Dr. Freda Scott-Park will be our guest keynote speakers. We hope to receive many abstracts to present results from studies and research from all over the world. We are looking forward to meeting you in Cascais, Portugal at what promises to be a most stimulating and enjoyable event!

Deadline call for papers: 10th May Early bird registration deadline: 20th March 2nd Registration deadline: 10th June 3rd Registration deadline: 10th October Invited Speakers Dr. Alain Boissy PhD Alain Boissy is a senior scientist at INRA. He has 30 years of experience in research on farm animal behaviour and welfare. His basic research focuses on the emotional and cognitive processes that conditioned how the animal perceives its environment. His applied research consists to promote the social and emotional skills of the animals to improve farming practices that reconcile animal welfare issues with production efficiency. His favourite scientific skills are cognitive ethology and psychophysiology of stress. In the past Alain worked on social behaviour and emotional reactivity in cattle and small ruminants, by studying their respective influences and their modulation according to genetic background and past experience of the animals. For fifteen years, he develops a scientific framework inspired by cognitive psychology for better assessing emotions in animals and understanding the transition from emotions, transitory reactions, to welfare, long-lasting affective states. Now he starts to investigate the links between welfare and health, and to promote positive emotions in animals. He is the leader of the French scientific network AgriBEA managing researches on welfare in farm animals and currently involving 170 members. He has published more than 135 scientific papers (90 primary papers, 45 reviews or book chapters and 3 collective books) and 25 technical papers. Since 2007 he is associate editor at the scientific journal "Animal".

3 Freda Scott-Park BVM&S, PhD, Hon.DVM&S, MRCVS Freda is a veterinary surgeon living in Scotland. She is provides cardiac consultancy services to the human pharmaceutical industry, ensuring that novel medicines are free from ECG abnormalities in animals, before their transfer to clinical trials. Freda is currently Chairman of the Links Group UK (a committed multi-agency interest group that promotes the welfare and safety of vulnerable children, animals and adults so that they are free from violence and abuse). During her time as President of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association and following that, as President of the British Veterinary Association, she sought to ensure that veterinary surgeons were made aware of their role in recognising animal abuse, and beyond that, the possibility of associated violence to humans in a violent home. The Links Group in the UK offers practical help and advice to vets and health professionals, as well as helping to make people understand why hurting humans and animals is unacceptable.
