HONEYCUTT M C CULLEY JONES M.HAM BARBER K.HAM Turning Ideas Into Reality Mission Discovery Launch Your Ideas Into Space Mission Discovery has completed its first assignment at Imperial College London. The programme is moving on to other universities, science and technological centres and cities around the world.
It was an amazing experience, it gave me an insight, direction, and an assurance of what I want to do in the future Salma Dwikartika, age 17 Mission Discovery was, by far, the most comprehensive, interesting, and educational endeavour that I have been involved with Mike McCulley Former NASA Astronaut and President of United Space Alliance.
Mission Discovery Turning Ideas Into Reality The Mission Briefing The mission for those who choose to accept it: Work with astronauts, astronaut trainers, space rocket scientists and NASA leaders for a week. Compete to have your idea for an experiment built, launched to the International Space Station and carried out in space. Our US partners have a Space Act Agreement with NASA that enables educational projects to be carried out on the International Space Station. The International Space School Educational Trust (ISSET) is a registered not for profit charity (Reg No ).
Rationale The Augustine Report Rising Above the Gathering Storm to the US Senate states that the inadequacies of science, technologies, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research and education pose a greater threat to the US nation over the next quarter century than any potential conventional war that might be imagined. As we progress through the 21st Century, countries will strive to be more competitive in an increasingly challenging global market. All countries will rely on a work force that must possess scientific, technological and mathematical skills and knowledge combined with abilities such as creativity, analysis, process-thinking, and innovation. Research shows that engaged and active learning, together with support and challenge from role models, offers the most powerful, deep and enduring learning. The development of these attributes needs to be complemented with a clear sense of the benefits to people and their communities. Novel ways in which we can engage and stimulate the interest of young people in science are much needed. Mission Discovery utilises the various aspects of space and human space flight to do just this. The ingenuity of the proposed research projects was quite remarkable. The students gained real confidence and thoroughly enjoyed the week. Professor Stephen Harridge Director, Center of Human & Aerospace Physiological Sciences, King s College London The leaders and innovators of tomorrow need highly developed abilities in: - Team working - Leadership - Problem solving - Communication - Critical thinking - Creative thinking - Presentation skills - Self confidence - Science, technology, engineering and mathematics Mission Discovery has been developed to address these needs and provide unique and inspirational opportunities and experiences. The course was brilliant, the mixture of life skills and science was spot on Hannah Carter, age 15 The Winning Team with Astronauts Ken Ham and Mike McCulley from Mission Discovery - Imperial College London in August 2011.
Project Description Ordinary young people can achieve the extraordinary, through the unique opportunity of having their ideas built and launched into space. In Mission Discovery young people of high school and undergraduate age will work for a week with astronauts, NASA leaders, scientists, inventors and innovators. In teams they will come up with an idea for an experiment to be carried out in space, the best idea will be selected, built, launched and taken to the International Space Station. LEARN PLAN The Mission Discovery programme includes the following themes: - NASA leadership and team building - How you fulfil your dreams and ambitions - How space exploration benefits life on earth - The environment of space - The experience of being in space - What makes a great experiment - Space experiments, developments and spin-offs - Research, guided by experts - Budgeting - Presentation skills - Cutting edge technology - Inculcating the NASA you can do it spirit Mission Discovery enables young people to work with a team of fantastically successful people, who have attained their achievements through an education based on science and technology. The astronauts and the NASA leaders are living role models of how hard work and persistence in STEM can fulfil dreams and ambitions. PRESENT Mission Discovery brings the best of NASA team work and leadership to young people and also introduces them to the amazing opportunity of having their ideas taken into space. This inspirational opportunity illustrates that if you are creative, you can work in a team and you can present your ideas, then anything is possible. ACHIEVE
