Increasingly, my classes have included greater emphasis on understanding both educator identity and dominant privilege. For educators to understand their own students, they must first understand themselves. Their stories and experiences provide insight and opportunities to explore the impact of unconscious behaviors and actions on their students, families and communities. By exploring the idea that we don t know what we don t know, we shift from a spotlight on other to a spotlight on self, so that the true complexities and nuances of interactions can be more fully examined.

2 2 When educators understand themselves and have greater experience in analyzing personal behaviors and actions with students and families, they are then able to recognize and better understand the systemic barriers in educational processes that can adversely impact what they are trying to accomplish. Educators are constrained by many internal and external forces (that usually have both benefits and limitations), such as resources, traditions, and increasing demands for state and federal accountability. If understanding educator identity and dominant privilege are the foundations for thinking about issues of diversity and multiculturalism, then understanding systemic factors, including policies and practices, is the next and equally critical level of need.
