Purpose Fischertechnik Closed-Loop System A closed-loop system is one in which a control system constantly monitors the output while input is adjusted according to the feedback provided by sensors or switches. A closed-loop system can run infinitely on its own, without having to be watched or monitored. In this activity, a closed-loop system using two switches as the feedback source will be built and controlled. Equipment/Supplies Intelligent Interface Power supply and serial cable Motor Computer Hook up wire Two Switches Aluminum Bar with rack Two-15 mm double ended blocks Gearbox Procedure Figure 1 1. Construct the system shown. Notice that you will need the following:

The interface box (either serial or parallel), power supply and interface cable One long aluminum strut, two 15mm building blocks (they are supporting the long aluminum strut; yours may be black), sections of racks (enough to over the top of the strut), one motor and one gearbox Two switches, wired OPEN (more on this in a second). Three connecting wires, with plugs attached at each end. 2. Connect the system to the base plate. Wiring Only one motor is used for this exercise. 1. On the interface box, connect the plugs on one end of the connecting wires to M1 (a motor control), and the plugs on the other end to the motor on the rack setup. 2. The switches need to be wired and attached to the sides of the aluminum strut. The switches can be wired in one of two ways: either Open or Closed. The switch is a digital device it will read either ON (with a check) or OFF (without). 3. Wire both switches OPEN, and connect the switch on the LEFT facing it to I2 and the switch on the RIGHT to I1.

Figure 2 4. Move, by hand, the motor to the middle of the rack. (Remember to disengage the gearbox from the motor; otherwise, you might damage the gearbox.) Program Control In order to control the motor moving along the rack, we need to write a program. The software that we are using is called RoboPro, which is a flowchart-based program. 1. First, open RoboPro. 2. Begin a new project. Before writing this program, we need to find which direction (left or right) running the motor clockwise will create, and therefore be able to plan which switch will be contacted in that direction. RoboPro gives us a tool to diagnose these issues. It is called the Interface Test and can be found in the mail toolbar. Open that dialog box now.

Figure 3 3. First, depress the switch connected to I2. Notice that the box next to it will have a checkmark appear. Do the same to the switch connected to I1. Push both switches at the same time. Be sure that the signals change from low to a high. If either one doesn t, check your wiring and your connections. Sometimes the plugs come loose, or the connections aren t tight. 4. Next, click on the CCW for M1. (Make sure that you reengaged the gearbox and the motor, after moving it earlier.) This represents the counterclockwise direction. Which way does the motor move? Left or Right? It should move to the left. If it doesn t, interchange the wiring plugs on the motor. (This will change the motor s polarity, making it move in the opposite direction.) 5. Check the motor one more time before leaving this step. By selecting CCW for Motor 1, the train should move to the left. CW for Motor 1 should move the train to the right. Once everything is connected correctly, and works properly, x out of the box. 6. We need to turn the motor on; run it until it connects with a switch. Once it connects with a switch, the motor should change direction and move to the other end until it comes into contact with the other switch. Again, once it connects to that switch, the motor should change directions and keep going back and forth forever. The program shown here is one way to accomplish the task. Text notes have been entered so that you understand what is happening at each step. This program uses a branch in addition to the motor. The branch is particularly useful when used with a digital signal. It monitors the state of the switch, and will follow the direction specified. Figure 4 In this example, the branch is monitoring the state of the switch we connected to I1. For our wiring, if it is zero (open), it will branch to the right. If it is one (closed), it will branch down. For more help, go to the help menu for RoboPro found in the Start/RoboPro/Help.

The Program Figure 5 7. Save your program as Closed Loop. 8. From the Main toolbar, select Run. Figure 6 The program will compile, checking for errors. The program will then start the motor as instructed by the flowchart steps. It is always a good idea to leave your cursor over the Stop button on the main toolbar just in case the program doesn t behave the way it was designed.

Student outcome/product/deliverable Students will learn what a closed loop system is. Students will learn how to use switches as input devices. Students will learn how to connect switches in an normally open position. Students will learn how to connect switches in a normally closed position. Students will learn how create a program subroutine.
