1 KICKRiCKulum presents the Beatitudes Preschool Lesson Nine: A Friend to God and Man Matthew 5: 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: they shall be called the sons of God. Support Verses: Romans 5:1 and 2 Timothy 2:24a Therefore, BEING been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. And the servant of God must not be quarrelsome, fighting and contending. Instead he must be kindly to everyone and mild-tempered preserving the bond of peace... Puppet Skit Materials needed: one package of miniature Reese cups, a container with lid large enough to hold the miniature cups Puppet: Puppet enters at the conclusion of the reading of the main verse, shaking a container of candy. Hi class! (shake, shake) Hi teacher! (shake) Teacher: Hi, puppet, how are you today? Puppet: I am doing great! Glad to see you all again. (shake, shake, very noisy double shake) Teacher: You are just in time. We are learning a verse from the Bible. Puppet: Oh, I already have my verse. (shake, shake) Teacher: I am sorry, I couldn t hear you. You re making so much noise! Puppet: Oooops! (Puppet stops shaking.) I just want to be called a son of God. Teacher: A son of God? By being a shaker? Puppet: Yeah, you know what the verse says to do. So, I bought some Reese s candy. I made a shaker and now I have to obey scripture. Remember? Blessed are the Reese shakers, they shall be called the sons of God. Teacher: Oh, no puppet! Not Reese shakers! The verse says, Blessed are the peacemakers! Puppet: Oh my golly! Peacemakers? Not Reese shakers? Now what will I do with all this candy? (Puppet pauses and then gets a brilliant idea) I guess we will have to eat it! My mom always says, Don t waste food. Candy is food, so have some! Teacher: Thank you, puppet. Teacher distributes candy to each child. Puppet: I better get going. I have to tell my mom what I just learned. She will be glad to have some peace quiet in the house since I don t have to shake that candy anymore. Bye! Teacher: Bye and thanks for the candy. Encourage children to say thank you also.

2 being a friend to God and man. Materials needed: wooden cross pink packing slip with the word peace on it meaning: Follow through with delivery, opening of package and sharing items. Ask: What do you think our lesson might be about? Entertain answers. Say: The cross in our package reminds us of peace. Someone who looks to the cross and has invited Jesus into his or her heart to be his or her friend has made peace with God. This person also wants to have peace with others and to be a friend to them. This person also wants others to choose God so that they will have peace with Him. Materials needed: 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper for each child, glue, white or yellow construction paper, letter stencils, crayons or markers, sandwich baggies Using construction paper and stencils, cut out the letters P- E- A C- E. Cut enough letters for each child to spell the word peace. Put the construction paper cut out letters: P -E -A -C -E in individual Baggies so that each child will have their own. Set aside. On the sheets of paper trace the letters P E A C E horizontally using the same stencils. Allow about 1 inch between letters. Do not overlap letters or allow letters to touch. Trace the word P -E -A -C -E only one time per paper. Say: Let s talk about peace. Pass out one sheet of paper with the word P E A C E on it to each child. Say: This is what the word peace looks like. Hold up Baggies. Say: In this baggie are the letters P- E -A -C E, just like on your paper. But they are all mixed up. Distribute letters and markers or crayons. Say: Let s decorate these letters. Give children time to decorate letters. Say: Now, let s be peacemakers. Looking at your letters on the sheet of paper, find the letter P. Point to it. Now, can you find the matching letter P that you just decorated? When children have identified the letter P pass out glue to them. Say: Now, glue your decorated letter P on top of the letter P on your sheet of paper. Assist children if necessary in matching the letters. Continue with the children one letter at time until the entire word P E A C E is glued to the sheet of paper. When finished say: You just made peace. You are a peacemaker! Read: Genesis Chapters 2 and 3 as paraphrased in the object lesson below Materials needed: Artificial or live plants and flowers Stuffed animals of all kinds and sizes Toy or live birds and fishes Basin of water Basket of artificial or real fruits and vegetables Paper sun, moon and stars Artificial or live fica tree or small Christmas tree A rope long enough to stretch throughout the room Also needed: 4 children to play the role of Adam, Eve, God and Jesus Large rubber snake or live (just kidding? ) Scissors

3 Create the Garden of Eden for your class using the above materials. In one area arrange all the plants and flowers. NOTE: It is important to keep materials in groupings as listed above for the purpose of this lesson. In another area, not far from the plants and flowers, scatter the animals. Next to the animals place the birds and fishes. A few feet from the birds and fishes place the basin of water. Close to the basin of water place the basket of fruits and vegetables. Above the basket, hang the paper sun, moon and stars from the ceiling. Beside the sun, moon and stars place the tree. Lay the rope in front of the plants and flowers. Choose a boy and girl to play the part of Adam and Eve. Choose one child to play the part of God. Begin the story as follows. God created some very fabulous things and placed them in a Garden called Eden. He created many different plants, flowers, animals, fruits and vegetables, rivers, the sun, moon and stars. He even created people. He created a man out of the dust of the earth and named him Adam. One day God made Adam sleep and while Adam was sleeping, God took out one of Adam s ribs. And it didn t even hurt! Then He used that rib and created a wife for Adam, a helper named Eve. When Adam woke up God introduced Eve to Adam. Adam was sooo glad to have a helpmate because it was not good for Adam to be alone. God walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden. He talked with Adam and Eve in the Garden. Position the children playing Adam and Eve to stand at the end of the rope near the plants and flowers. Position God with them, as friends. Put one end of the rope in Adam and Eve s hands, held together. Put the opposite end of the rope in the hands of the child playing God. Tell the children ahead of time that they will take hold of the rope and walk ahead each time you mention something that is in the garden. Say: God loved Adam and Eve very much. They loved God too. Adam and Eve had peace with God. They had friendship. They were connected to God. God showed Adam and Eve everything in the garden. He showed them the plants and flowers. Have children look at the plants and flowers. He showed them the animals. Adam and Eve can pet the animals. He showed them the birds and fishes. Adam and Eve move to the birds and fishes with God while holding the rope. He showed them the water. Children move to the water. And the fruits and vegetables. Children can eat the fruit or vegetables. God showed them the sun, moon and stars. Children gaze up while still holding the rope. THEN, God showed them the tree. This was a special tree. God told Adam and Eve that they could have EVERYTHING in the garden EXCEPT the fruit of that tree. This tree was called the tree of knowledge of good and evil. He said if they ate of that tree, they would die. Then God let Adam and Eve have time in the garden alone as He went to do other things. Instruct God to walk to the other side of the room while STILL HOLDING on to the rope. Adam and Eve hold on also. Instruct Adam to lay down to rest and fall asleep by the tree. Instruct Eve to sit by the tree. Position the serpent in the tree, visible to the children. Say: One day a serpent named Satan began to talk to Eve as she sat by the tree. He began to ask her questions. He said, Did God reeeeeeeeeally tell you not to eat of the fruit of eeeevery tree in the garden? Eve said, We may eat of every fruit of the tree in the garden except the fruit of this tree. God said that we shall not eat it or even touch it or we would die. The serpent said, "Surely you shall not die." For God knows that if you eat of this fruit your eyes shall be opened and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when Eve saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pretty and that it could make her smart she ate it and gave it to Adam to eat too. Then their eyes opened and they knew that they did wrong. Teacher cuts the rope between God and Adam and Eve. Say: The serpent was a troublemaker and NOT A PEACEMAKER. This trouble making caused a break in the friendship between man and God. Adam and Eve had to leave the Garden. Show children the broken rope. But because God so loved Adam and Eve and all the world He sent Someone who could fix the broken peace between man and God. That Someone is Jesus. Position child to be Jesus at both broken ends of the rope. Say: God sent Jesus, His only Son, to fix the broken peace and bring man back into friendship with God. Instruct child to hold the broken ends together. Because of Jesus we now have peace with God. Jesus is our peacemaker. As long as we have Jesus in our life, we will be connected to the Father. We are to be like Jesus and bring peace to everyone we can.

4 (Present questions for discussion) What wonderful things did Adam and Eve have in the Garden of Eden? They also had peace with God in the garden. What does that mean? What were they not supposed to eat or touch in the garden? How did it happen that they did eat the fruit of the tree? Is the serpent/ Satan a troublemaker or a peacemaker? Troublemakers pull people away from God. Peacemakers lead people to God. Who did God send to us to bring us back into peace with Him? How can you be a peacemaker? Do you know anyone who is a peacemaker?

5 Activities Good News! Children will learn the command of carrying the good news of the gospel. Matthew 28:19 Materials needed: several newspapers folded and rubber banded, bag to carry newspapers, 2 buckets, Floor tape Say: The Bible tells us, How lovely on the mountain are the feet of him who brings good news, announcing peace.... God commands us to take the good news of Jesus as our Peacemaker to everyone we know. Sharing the news of Jesus will bring them back into friendship with God and with each other. Let s have a race and see who can be fast at delivering the news. Divide class into 2 groups. Line groups up beside each other as in a relay. Place a bag of 3 or 4 banded newspapers on the shoulder of one child in each group. Place that child first in line. Place buckets in the opposite end of the room far from each team. About 3/4 of the distance from the child to the bucket lay a strip of tape in a horizontal line on the floor. Challenge each team, one runner at a time, to run to the line, stop and toss papers into the bucket. When a paper makes it in the basket, the child must yell Peace! All newspapers must land in the bucket. Keep trying until this is accomplished. When all papers are in the bucket, instruct the child to put the papers back in their bag and return the bag to the next team member in line. The first team to complete the race wins; however, all are winners because they have just delivered the good news of peace!

6 Bridging the Gap Children will experience a demonstration of finding God through Jesus our Peacemaker and faith. Materials needed: 2 x 4 x 8 foot board, blindfold Also needed: one child to represent God Lay board on the floor in an open space. Position the child playing God at one end. Tell the other children: There is only one Way to get to God. We must cross the bridge (board) to get to Him. Alone we cannot find the way. The Bible says that There is a way that seems right unto man but that way leads to destruction. So we need help. We cannot do it alone. It also says that we must get to God by faith. Faith means we cannot see with our own eyes. We must see by believing. So, we are going to cross blindfolded. I will be Jesus. I will help you find the way to the God. You will have to trust me while wearing a blindfold that I will lead you safely. Give each child an opportunity to get to God, by faith, trusting Jesus our Peacemaker. Ask children if they have made a choice to make peace and to be friends with God. Use this opportunity to give a call to salvation. Before continuing to the Final Spin, make sure all children have chosen salvation. Bring out the KIDnabber object so children may associate with it one more time. Materials needed: magazine pictures of families and people, one large poster board cut in the shape of a house, glue sticks Show pictures of families from above. Ask: Who has a family? Entertain answers. Ask: Where do you and your family live? Entertain answers. Ask: Who is a son or daughter in a family? Entertain answers. Because you are a son or a daughter, most of the time, you get to have everything in your house that your Mom and Dad have in the house, right? You get this because you are a son or daughter in that house! Well, listen to the promise that God gives us for being a peacemaker. He says, Blessed are the peacemakers: they shall be called sons or daughters of God. That makes God our Father. THAT means that everything in our Father s house belongs to us, too. Just like everything in your Mom and Dad s house belongs to you too! That means we are family and we all belong together, forever! When we make peace with God and peace with others, we all have a friendship with God. What happens if we tell others of the good news of peace and they become God s son or daughter also? Now we have a bigger family!! We have more brothers and sisters! Show the poster board house. Pass out the magazine pictures. Allow children to all work together and glue the many people onto the house. Let s always try to be a peacemaker so that God s family never stops growing! Close in prayer.
