PRESCHOOL BIBLE STORY LEADER s GUIDE DAY 1 As the Bible Story Leader, you will lead the children in the Bible Story from the Leader s Guide each day. You will have three groups of children come to your Bible story area every day. Any supplies and items to be used for the stories may vary from day to day, so be sure to check the What You ll Need section when preparing for each day s story and activities. If you have time, you can do several activities. Otherwise, you can simply tell the story and then review the Bible Memory Words. You also may want to do some of the Family Time activities included in the Family Time Teaching Kit (sold separately). Choose which activities will work best with your little ones and within your time frame. If time allows, you can do an activity or two from the day before and/or the day after as well as the current day s activities. Preschoolers love repetition! Objective Each child will understand that God gives us hope. Scripture Genesis 37:3-4, 12-14, (Joseph goes to Egypt) Memory Verse Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you to give you a future and a hope. (NLT) Planning Tips Trace the hearts from Teaching Visuals 1A onto red construction paper. Cut yarn into 15-inch lengths. Cut out the Joseph Paper Doll and Joseph s Clothes from Teaching Visuals 1B and 1C. Mount the doll on a cardboard or wooden handle. Practice telling the story using the visual. Read through this lesson for additional preparation tips. Bible Story Time YO Teaching Visuals 1A - 1E Bible Colorful robe or child-size coat Listen to the Bible Story Cut the YES and NO visuals from Teaching Visuals 1D. Mount the signs on wooden or cardboard handles (painters wooden stir sticks are excellent for this). Guide the children in understanding how their actions can help others feel loved or unloved. After each incident is read, ask: Does [person s name] feel loved? Wait for a response, then indicate the correct answer by raising the YES or NO sign. 1. Megan shared her banana with little brother Timmy. (YES) 2. Michael yelled, Go away! when Andrew came to play. (NO) 3. The children at school laughed at Maria because she talked funny. (NO) 4. Tyler chose Ethan to be on his team even though Ethan isn t a good player. (YES) Teacher Tip SR Bible Background Jacob clearly favored Joseph over his other sons because Joseph had been born later and to his favorite wife. Not surprisingly, Joseph s favored-son status caused his brothers to resent him. Joseph s willingness to bring bad reports concerning them to their father encouraged their resentment to turn to hatred (Genesis 37:2). And when Jacob gave Joseph a richly ornamented robe, his brothers could not even speak civilly toward him (verses 3-4). Joseph s conflict with his brothers is not the only case of rivalry between siblings recorded in Genesis. A jealous Cain murdered his brother Abel (Genesis 4:1-16). Ishmael was sent away by his father, Abraham, to make room for his brother Isaac (Genesis 21:8-14). Jacob fled for his life when his brother, Esau, threatened to kill him (Genesis 27:41-45). 2

PRESCHOOL BIBLE STORY LEADER s GUIDE DAY 1 Continued Bible Story Time YO Hold open your Bible on your lap. Hold the Joseph Paper Doll and Joseph s Clothes until they are needed for the story. GOD GIVES JOSEPH HOPE In and out, in and out! Jacob s needle and thread went in and out of the bright cloth. Soon he had finished one long seam. Then he put more thread in the needle and sewed another long seam. There! Jacob said. (Show paper doll s colorful coat.) Joseph s new coat is finished! I ll give it to him when he comes in for lunch! After a while Joseph came into their big tent home (show Joseph Paper Doll, dressed in plain clothes). I have something for you, Jacob said. He unfolded the bright-colored robe and held it up for Joseph to see. Jacob said, I made this for you, my son! (Put the coat on Joseph.) Joseph tried on the coat. It fit just fine! He liked the way Jacob s needle and thread had put the pieces together so well. He smiled and pulled the robe around him. Joseph could feel how much his father, Jacob, loved him. Joseph had many big brothers. As he tried on the lovely new robe, the brothers watched. They looked at one another and frowned. The brothers felt that Jacob loved Joseph more than he loved them. They whispered to each other bad things about Joseph. Later, they were mean to Joseph. Joseph travelled far away from home. Some other people were mean to him, too. They sent Joseph to prison, even though he hadn t done anything wrong! But God cared for Joseph and loved Joseph, even when he was in prison. God helped Joseph. Years later, Joseph went to live in the palace with the Pharaoh. God took good care of Joseph. God takes care of you and me, too. God gives us hope, and God has special plans for each person. Bible Words Memory Time Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to give you hope and a future. (NIV) For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord to give you a future and a hope. (NLT) Before the lesson, make a set of Bible memory flashcards. Cut out the Boy and Girl, Jesus, and Plans pictures from Teaching Visuals 1E. Glue each picture onto a separate sheet of construction paper. On another piece of paper, print Jeremiah 29:11. Say, God helps us and plans good things for us. One way God helps us is by letting us know that He loves us. Select children to hold the Bible Words flashcards as you lead the children in saying the Bible Words. Review the Bible Words, letting volunteers say them by themselves. Ask the children to tell you what they think the Bible Words mean. Give each child an opportunity to hold a card while everyone says the Bible Words together. Review the Bible Story Bring a colorful robe or child-size coat. Read the Bible Words several times from your Bible. Have the children repeat the Bible Words several times. Ask for volunteers to say the Bible Words while wearing a dress-up coat like Joseph s. Have the volunteers take turns wearing the coat and saying the words (with your help, as necessary). Say, God helps us by loving us so much that He sent His Son to die for us. No matter what we do, God always will love us. 3

PRESCHOOL CRAFT LEADER s GUIDE DAY 1 As the Craft Leader, you will lead the children in one or more of these Bible Learning Crafts. You will have three groups of children come to your craft area every day. Cover the craft tables with plastic tablecloths that can be wiped off after messy crafts. Supplies and items to be used for the crafts may vary from day to day, so be sure to check the What You ll Need section when preparing for each day s crafts. Print the Activity Sheets from the CD-ROM for the crafts that have patterns. You can print the craft pages in color or print them in black and white and copy them for each child. Choose which crafts will work best with your little ones and with your time frame. Objective Each child will understand that God gives us hope. Scripture Genesis 37:3-4, 12-14, (Joseph goes to Egypt) Memory Verse Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you to give you a future and a hope. (NLT) Planning Tips For the trumpet craft, print the Activity Sheet 1B for each child. For the heart craft for each child: trace hearts onto red construction paper. Bible Crafts YO Fan Craft Activity Sheet 1A for each child Crayons, craft sticks, tape, glue (opt.) Before the meeting, cut out the fan from Activity Sheet 1A. Give each child crayons, a craft stick, and the fan from Activity Sheet 1A. Point to the Bible Words as you read them. If you use the NIV, cut the box from above the fan and glue it to cover the NLT words on the fan. Print the child s name on the back, and then let the child scribble color the front of the fan. Tape a craft stick handle to the fan. Show the children how to wave their fans to make wind. Talk about God s love for us as they fan themselves. Say, When people ask you about your fan, tell them that God loves everyone, and He gives us hope. Teacher Tip SR Bible Background Jacob clearly favored Joseph over his other sons because Joseph had been born later and to his favorite wife. 5 PRESCHOOL Craft LEADER s GUIDE DAY 1 Continued Bible Crafts YO Trumpet Craft Activity Sheet 1B for each child Crayons, tape Hand out crayons and Activity Sheet 1B. Have the children color the letters. Then, beginning at the top, have the children roll up their page, with the letters on the outside, until the bottom of the page meets the solid black line. All the letters should show. Tape the roll along the solid line. Have the children put their trumpets up to their mouths and say the Bible Words in praise to the Lord. Say, You can use your trumpet to tell someone about the hope God gives us. We have a great Lord God who loves and helps us. We should praise Him and thank Him every day. Heart Craft Prepared red construction paper, scissors, craft sticks, glue, crayons, yarn, hole punch Before the meeting, fold a sheet of red construction paper in half for each child. Trace a half-heart on one side of the fold. Give each child the paper, scissors, two craft sticks, glue, crayons, and a 10-inch length of yarn. Have him cut the heart out and unfold it. Help him glue the craft sticks together in the middle of the heart, forming a cross. Print, God gives us hope. on his heart. Punch two holes at the top of each heart and help the child add a yarn hanger. Say, God gave Joseph hope and God gives us hope, too! 3

Activity sheet 1A GOD GIVES US HOPE Joseph Was Loved Jacob loved his boy Joseph very much. Your family loves you very much. And God loves you most of all (Genesis 37:3-4; 46:28-30)! Help Jacob sew a coat for Joseph by tracing over the broken lines. Color the coat with bright stripes. 4

PRESCHOOL GAMES LEADER s GUIDE DAY 1 As the Games Leader, you will lead the children in the Bible Learning Game from the Games Leader s Guide each day. You will have three groups of children come to your game area every day. Any supplies and items to be used for the games may vary from day to day, so be sure to check the What You ll Need section when preparing for each day s games. If you have time, you can play several games. Otherwise, you can pick one or two. Choose which ones will work best with your little ones and with your time frame. If time allows, you can play a game or two from the day before and/or the day after as well as the current day s game(s). Objective Each child will understand that God gives us hope. Scripture Genesis 37:3-4, 12-14, (Joseph goes to Egypt) Memory Verse Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you to give you a future and a hope. (NLT) Planning Tips Read through the games beforehand. Bible Games YO Learn from the Bible Story Have the children walk in a circle. Sing the following words to the tune of LONDON BRIDGE. Use the motions. God is very powerful (flex arms), powerful, powerful. God is very loving (hug self). He can change our words. (Point to mouth.) God is very powerful (flex arms), powerful, powerful. God is very loving. He loves us so (both hands over heart). God is very powerful (flex arms), powerful, powerful. God is very loving (hug self). He gives us hope. (Point up.) Bible Game Now sing these words to the tune of LONDON BRIDGE: God is very loving, loving, loving. God is very loving. He gives us hope! Yell YEAH!! and clap. Say, We just sang our Bible point for today. Now let s say the Bible Words together. Read the verse from your Bible. Lead the children in saying the verse a few times. Say, Our Lord God is very great and powerful. He made all of us, and He loves us! Thank You, God, for all the great things You do. Thank You, God, forgiving us hope. Have the children say the verse again, then sing it, and clap for the Lord. Teacher Tip SR Bible Background Jacob clearly favored Joseph over his other sons because Joseph had been born later and to his favorite wife. 8 PRESCHOOL Snack LEADER s GUIDE DAY 1 As the Snack Leader, you will provide a snack for the preschoolers each day during VBS. Cover the craft tables with plastic tablecloths that can be wiped off (or tossed) after messy snacks. Snack supplies may vary from day to day, so be sure to check the What You ll Need section when preparing for each day s snack. Choose which snack to use each day (or a combination of both). If you prefer, you can use the snack suggestions from your elementary VBS program Marketplace or bring snacks from your own recipes. Bring enough snacks for your leaders and helpers as well as for your preschoolers. Provide wet wipes for cleaning up afterward. Crew leaders should help the children wash their hands and then help them find a place to sit for the snacks. Be sure you know which of your preschoolers have allergies. Make a special nametag for each child who has allergies. The nametag can list the allergies so the child is not mistakenly given food to which he s allergic. Lead the children in a brief prayer of thanks before they eat. Remind them to fold their hands and close their eyes. Talk about the day s Bible theme during the snack time. As children finish their snacks, help them throw away their cups, plates, and napkins. Even two-year-olds can feel a sense of accomplishment as they put their trash in the trashcan. Wipe off their hands and have a leader take them to the bathroom. Let the children have a time of free play before beginning the next activity. Objective Each child will understand that God gives us hope. Scripture Genesis 37:3-4, 12-14, (Joseph goes to Egypt) Memory Verse Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you to give you a future and a hope. (NLT) Planning Tips Gather the snack supplies beforehand. Snack Time YO Fruit Bananas or applesauce, juice or water, napkins, paper cups, spoons (opt.) After the children wash their hands, lead them in praying the THANKFUL RHYME: We thank You, God, for food and home and other joys That You give to us girls and boys. Amen. Serve fresh bananas or applesauce. Ask, Whose power makes bananas (or apples) grow? That s right, [Adam]; God s power makes bananas grow. God loves us and helps us have good food! Give each child a napkin and a cup of juice or water. Talk about other foods God gives us because He loves us. Ask how many have gardens at their homes and have seen food growing. Teacher Tip SR Bible Background Jacob clearly favored Joseph over his other sons because Joseph had been born later and to his favorite wife. Not surprisingly, Joseph s favored-son status caused his brothers to resent him. Joseph s willingness to bring bad reports concerning them to their father encouraged their resentment to turn to hatred (Genesis 37:2).
