3 DuPage Sensory Garden Playground, Inclusive Playground Project OUR SHARED VISION As a cooperative effort of the Wheaton Park District, the Kiwanis Club of Wheaton, the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, and the Forest Preserve District DuPage County, a new garden/playground is being developed at Danada South Park. Located near the corner of Naperville Road and Warrenville Road, this 40-acre park was developed by the former owner Lucent Technologies. It is an ideal location for a playground that will provide healthy recreational opportunities for children with and without disabilities. This project is possible with additional support from Landscape Structures, Shane s Inspiration and additional valued donors that will allow the full vision to be achieved. 4 The Project PROJECT BACKGROUND The Sensory Garden Playground will be situated within the Danada Forest Preserve near the corner of Naperville Road and Navistar Lane. The Wheaton Park District has a long term lease to maintain and develop the area. The site is easy to access from major transportation, yet is quietly tucked away in a shaded green space. The new playground proposes separate areas that allow children to progress at their own speed and focus on play activities developed to keep them engaged. Becoming a Partner As with all community-focused projects, the more partners that join in the efforts, the more successful the project. We have developed this catalogue as a visual description of the Sensory Garden Playground project. In the illustrations that follow, you will see a vision unfold that we hope you will want to support. Your donation and active involvement will support the Sensory Garden Playground that is unique to this area! In order to commemorate all partners in this collaborative venture, opportunities will be available to recognize corporate and individual contributors and individual memorials. 6 THE RACE HORSE FARM PLAYGROUND Playground for 5-12 year olds: This race horse farm themed structure will allow access to the highest level from either a ramp, or other climbing apparatus. There will be challenging activities including bouncing. The race horse farm detail will foster imaginative play for all abilities. Rubberized surfacing with race horse farm motif will cushion falls. 7 PONY STABLES PLAYGROUND Playground for 2-5 year olds includes: A pony stables themed play structure features slides, climbers, and activity panels all with the pony stables theme. Also included will be two toddler swings. 8 CENTRAL GATHERING SPACE This is the area where children and adults will gather before dispersing into the playground or where they will meet before departing. It will also provide a comfortable space for parents to observe their children at play. Shade will be provided by shade sails that are white and cerise; the colors of the Danada Stables. Benches and a drinking fountain will also be provided. The center piece of this space will be a Mare and Foal climbable sculpture which will provide hours of imaginative play for children of all abilities. Rubberized surfacing will cushion falls. 9 TREE-TOP SWINGS Swings for 5-12 year olds contain: Two belt swings and two molded high-back swings with harnesses for children with low muscle tone. The Oodle swing allows multiple kids to swing at one time or just one kid to soar like superman. Rubberized surfacing with race horse farm motif will cushion falls. 12 MAGICAL MUSICAL AREA TUBANO DRUMS These handcrafted outdoor musical instruments are easy to play and offer a great sensory play experience for beginners and experts alike. Knowledge of music, keys or scales is not necessary. If you ve ever wished you could play music, now you can. 13 PLAY ALONG THE WAY City of Wheaton, Ill. will issue a Request for Proposal to find an artist who will design an art installation to be called Play Along the Way, which will provide an interesting experience for children and adults walking to the playground.
