1 ALOPECIA AREATA: SPOT BALDNESS & HAIR LOSS DR. DUFTON S SUPPLEMENTAL HANDOUT

2 ALOPECIA AREATA: SPOT BALDNESS & HAIR LOSS ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION Alopecia areata is a relatively mysterious condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Because it causes bald spots on the scalp, it's sometimes called spot baldness. In 1 2% of cases, the condition spreads to the entire scalp (alopecia totalis) or to the entire epidermis (alopecia universalis). The condition affects up to 0.2% of people and occurs in both genders. The condition can be somewhat managed or controlled with pharmaceuticals and some natural herbal remedies and supplements. TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience for this activity is pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in hospital, community, and retail pharmacy settings. LEARNING OBJECTIVES After completing this activity, the pharmacist will be able to: Describe the pathophysiology, frequency and implications of alopecia areata. Outline the natural / non-pharmacological methods used to treat / prevent alopecia. Compare and contrast the most common pharmaceuticals used to treat alopecia, including mechanisms of action and potential side effects. After completing this activity, the pharmacy technician will be able to: List pharmacological medications used to treat alopecia List non-pharmacological treatments for alopecia ACCREDITATION PHARMACY PharmCon, Inc. is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
