i i The introduction The visual elements of the University of Liverpool s brand, which include the name, the shield, the colour and the typography, are a valuable asset. The new visual identity reflects the University s personality - modern, forward thinking, innovative, rooted in its local community, but globally connected. The new identity, with its refined shield, gold and blue core colours, and clean, distinctive typography embraces the tradition and history of the University, but sits comfortably as a contemporary icon. Consistent and correct use of the the new visual identity will reinforce the University s brand, values and reputation as a world class research led institution. These graphic guidelines introduce the new identity and provide guidance for its use. They describe how the University of Liverpool logo should be applied in most situations, and across most mediums, including stationery, publications, presentations, advertising and signage. The guidelines are strict in certain areas, especially around logo usage, but allow freedom and flexibility for designers in other areas - like colour. If you would would like further advice or guidance in producing your various communications, please contact the Publications team on extension

ii The logo

ii Fig 1. Fig 2. ii THE LOGO (b) The University logo must be positioned in the top left or bottom left corners of literature. The only exception to this rule is on items such as committee papers or letterheads where all the text is centred. Contact the Publications Team on or if you need guidance. Fig 3. (a) (a) Give it space to breathe It is important that the logo appears clearly and without clutter and interference from any other graphic element such as type, other logos or imagery. The clear space or exclusion zone around the logo will ensure clarity and improve impact. The clear space is measured in two parts: (b) (b) Horizontal distance: The width (a) is measured as the width of the shield as shown in Figure 1. The logo must have a minimum clearance to the left and right as indicated by distance (a) in Figure 3. The width (a) is measured as the width of the logo crest as shown in Figure 1. (a) (a) Vertical distance: The distance (b) is the depth of the logo typography, and is illustrated in Figure 2. The logo must have a minimum clearance above and below of distance (b) as indicated in Figure 3. The measurements (a) and (b) are scaled in proportion to the logo size. They will remain constant, no matter what size the logo is used. (b) (b) To maintain the integrity of the new logo, the configuration should not deviate from what you see on this page. Key lines (the rules indicating width and depth on the diagram to the left) are for illustrative purposes only.

ii ii THE LOGO 40mm 45mm (b) Little and large The size of the logo will differ according to the size of the medium that it is being used on. The size of the logo is determined by measuring from the left hand edge of the shield to the tip of the gold rule on the right. We cannot pre-select a logo size for every potential medium. However, below is a guide to assist in usage on some of the more common paper sizes. Media size Logo size (width) 55mm A6 A5 210mm sq. A4 A3 A2 40mm 45mm 55mm 55mm 70mm 85mm 70mm These are for guidance only. It is appreciated that some design concepts may clearly require alternative sizes. Please call the Publications team on extension for advice. Also see the Literature section of this style guide for further information. 85mm

ii ii THE LOGO (c) What not to do The relationship of the logo s elements, graphic icon and typography must not be altered. This page illustrates some incorrect examples. Please DO NOT: Change orientation of logo Recreate the lettering of logo Separate the shield from the typography Distort the shape of the logo Change the logo colours Switch the placement of the logo. The typography must ALWAYS sit to the right of the shield emblem Separate elements further than specified Re-size elements independently DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REDRAW THE LOGO.

ii ii THE LOGO (d) Getting your hands on a logo Formats The University of Liverpool logo can be provided in two formats - as an eps or jpg. The eps version will provide the best quality production, and should be supplied to external suppliers handling quality print productions. However, for internal usage we suggest the use of the jpeg. If anyone needs to resize the logo they should drag from a corner rather than the top or bottom of the logo. This method will maintain its true shape. The logo should always be reproduced from master artwork. Download from PC To download the logo artwork file that you need from a PC, right click on the filename and select Save Target As. In the dialogue window leave the filename the same, choose your destination folder, then click OK. Download from Mac On an Apple Macintosh, control click the filename and select Download Image to Disc. In the dialogue window leave the filename the same, choose your destination folder, then click Save. The logo in jpg and eps format is available at: or from the Publications team. Consistent use of the brand logo colours will help to establish the new identity. No colours, other than the Pantone, CMYK and RGB references indicated on this page should be considered when using the logo in its various forms. Ideally the logo should be reproduced by specifying the Pantone references. However, where this is not possible, use one of the alternative suggestions. Pantone is a worldwide printing, publishing and packaging reference system. CMYK is the traditional four colour printing specification (C is cyan, M magenta, Y yellow and K black). RGB is for on-screen values for the Internet and Powerpoint. (b) Logo secondary colours The University of Liverpool publishes a vast range of publications. Designers and communicators have the freedom to use their skills to determine colours that reflect their subject matter, appeal to their target audience and complement the University s new logo. Strict adherence to the logo usage, the primary palette and corporate typography will ensure that the wide range of publications reflect the strengths of the new identity. 70% 60% 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% 50% 100% 25% 50%

iii iii THE COLOUR PALETTE (b) Logo variations The main version of the logo (see ii THE LOGO) is in three colours - blue, black and gold. This is, ideally, how the logo should appear. However, there may be occasions when logo variants are required - when printing on to a solid background colour, and when only one colour is available (for example a black and white only advert in a local or national newspaper). The two examples illustrate acceptable options for printing on solid backgrounds. These logos are available as jpg or eps format at or from the Publications team, extension 42251, or

iii iii THE COLOUR PALETTE (c) Further colour variations There will be occasions when only a single colour is either desirable, or available. A typical example would be for a recruitment advert in a newspaper printed in black and white. In that instance of the versions shown on the left should be used on a white background or on a solid black background. These logos should also be used on any internally printed document where black only is required, or a document is likely to be photocopied. These versions are available to download at or contact the Publications team on extension or

This is an attractive, modernsans serif typeface offering a wide range of weights as shown on the left. It is easy to read, and is perfect for both headline and text. Swiss 721 should be used, where possible, on external communications like the annual report, corporate literature, signage and posters etc. As a standard alternative to Swiss 721, Arial has been selected for use on internal documents, PowerPoint presentations, stationery including letterheads, compliment slips, business cards and fax sheets. Colour and black and white templates are available at These templates will allow for replication of a letterheading in the style shown opposite. The template has many lines so that you can personalise it to display your Faculty/Department/School and your address. Simply click the text boxes to change your details and remove any extra lines. Using these templates will help eliminate waste as indivdiual letterheads can be printed out, with personalised address details, as and when required.
