2 Activities Introduction 5 min How do we know how old a town or village is? What can we find out about the people who lived there? What s in a name? 40 mins Do names mean anything? Do any of the children know if their name means something? e.g. My name, Richard, is from the Saxon (Old English) and means Hard Ruler, or Powerful King. Names in this country can be made up from lots of different languages: Celtic - the language spoken by the inhabitants of Britain before the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons in the fifth century and its later forms (Welsh, Cornish, Irish and Gaelic). Saxon or Old English - the Germanic language of the Anglo-Saxons, spoken in England between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Old Norse - the Germanic language of the Vikings, who settled in northern and eastern parts of England in the ninth and tenth centuries. French - the language of the Norman invaders led by William the Conqueror. Latin - the language of the Romans, who conquered Britain in the first century AD, but also the language used by Priests, Monks and Lawyers: Most Latin placenames date from the medieval rather than Roman period. In addition these days we have names from all around the world as people have moved to Britain, or people travel and learn different languages. What about place names? Do the children think that place names might have meanings? Do they think place names could tell us anything about the people who named a place? PPT Slide 2: Luton The name Luton began when the Saxons conquered Bedfordshire in the 6th century. They built a farm (a tun) by the river Lea Lea Tun. (Lea may be a Celtic word meaning bright river). If a place name ends in tun or ton then it was once a Saxon farm. PPT Slide 3: Bramingham This place name is made up of three parts. Bram- is from the old Saxon name Brama.

3 -ing- is also from Saxon - Ingas. It means the people of or the family of. -ham means village So Bramingham means something like the village of Bramas family. Hand out worksheets (one between two or three). We will work together to fill this in. PPT Slide 4: Refer the children to Question 1 on their worksheet. Can any of them think of any place names they could write in? Do a couple together and then give them a few minutes to do more in table groups. Go through the answers together. Briefly discuss prefixes and suffixes. PPT Slide 5: Refer the children to Questions 2 and 3 on their worksheet. Do a couple more of the names together and then give them a few minutes to complete the rest in table groups. Go through the answers together. PPT Slide 6: This shows the locations of the towns and villages we have been thinking about. Nearly all villages and towns in Bedfordshire have place names dating from Saxon times. Did people live in Bedfordshire before the Saxons? Yes, of course, so what has happened? PPT Slide 7: Choose 8 children and put the named placards on them. Can the others explain any of the names? Can they put the names in historical order? (Penzance; Penge; Stratford; Howick; Northampton; Birmingham; Ormskirk; Mablethorpe) Write the answers on their worksheet (Question 4) Can they sort them by anything else? Map showing location of the places around the UK on PPT Slide 8. Answers for this section on PPT Slide 9. Sit the children down again. Ask if anyone can speak another language really well.

4 Get everyone on that persons table to become a landform (hill or river). The person who speaks another language should stand separately. She or he is a Celt and will now only talk in their other language. Ask them what the rest of their table are? The Celt should answer in their other language. (For example in Polish River is Rzeka pronounced zhe-ka), if you take that to be a specific name rather than the word for all rivers, you can end up with the River River. In the UK there are several River Avons. Avon is Celtic for River, so yes, River River Get another table with a non-english speaker to be the other landform and go through the process again to end up with Hill Hill just like Brickhill in the examples earlier. We can play a similar game with the table groups forming a farm or village. Who is in charge? Take their name and add a prefix or suffix from those we learnt about earlier to make your very own place name like those we ve been discussing. What is Waulud s Bank? 40 mins PPT Slide 10: Place names can only tell us a little bit about the history of a place. Just because Luton is named using Saxon words, is that proof that the Saxons where the first people to live there? How can we find out more about a place? What would we need to do? Try to get them to digging and archaeology. Hand out a set of maps per table. Can the children all spot Waulud s Bank? What does the name mean? The bank part refers to the obvious banks at the site. Waulud could be from Wayland, a Saxon God. Another story I ve heard says it is from warlord, not so sure about this one. What has changed over the past 100 years? (Move between Slides 10 & 11) So what is it? What river is it next to? Why might this have been a good place to live in the past? What would we need to do to find out how people used this space in the past? What is Waulud s Bank? Waulud s Bank is a Neolithic (New Stone Age) banked enclosure. What is a banked enclosure? See PPT Slide 12 to show what it may have looked like when new. It was constructed by? Neolithic farmers about 6,000 years ago. The Neolithic is the New Stone Age, when farming was first introduced to Britain. These farmers

5 were most likely descended from Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) hunter/gathers who we know also lived here as we have found their stone tools. What could it have been used for? We don t really know. It could have been an enclosure to keep their animals in, a market place, a religious centre, a fort, or perhaps just for people to live in. What do the children think? Get thoughts and feelings from class about what life would have been like for those people with no modern technology. Would it have been hard? Would the children like to live back in the past? If not, why not? PPT Slide 13: Use the objects from the Waulud s Bank mini-museum. Place one of the pre- Roman objects on each table. As you do so, explain that these are real objects over 4000 years old. How do they handle them? To be careful etc. Get tables to discuss what the object on their table is and how they think it would be used. Share findings across the class. Can these tell us about the way people lived? Discuss Neolithic people. How were they similar to us? How were they different? Scatter ideas on a white board, or make a list. Ask again, would the children like to live back in the past? If not, why not? Have the children s thoughts changed? PPT Slide 14: Ask class about Romans. Who were the Romans? Were the Romans in Luton? Were they at Waulud s Bank? Share Roman finds with class. What are these items? As these were found at Waulud s Bank were the Romans there? What would they have thought of Waulud s Bank? The earthworks of the bank were probably much more prominent in their time were they built by giants or ancient Gods? Plenary 5 mins Can place names tell us when a settlement was first started? If not, why not? Using the evidence from the Waulud s cases when did people first live/settle in Luton? Why do you think people settled by the River Lea? Why do you think the river has been important to people throughout history?

6 Page 1 How do place names work? 1. Think of an example of a place name that includes each of the following parts (the first has been completed for you). Your examples can be from Bedfordshire or from anywhere else in Britain. We know the meanings of parts of place names: Example -ton means a farm (Saxon) Luton -ham -ing -wick -ley -ford brig / brick -kirk -don / -den strat- means a village (Saxon) means people/tribe/family of an important person (Saxon) means a specialised farm or settlement (Roman) means a woodland clearing (Saxon) means a place to cross a river (Saxon) means a hill (Celtic) means church (Viking) means hill (Saxon) means Roman road (Roman) pen- / penn- means hill or headland (Celtic) -thorpe means an outlying or secondary settlement (Viking)

The only Celtic names I can find in Bedfordshire are rivers Ouse & Ouzel both come from the Celtic word for wet!
