DIGIT BEAR PLANNER TERM KEY LANGUAGE robot, control toys, forwards, backwards, turn, batteries, remote control, sensors, on, off, left, right. Resources needed: Remote control car or robot Batteries Number line Robotic movement song Skittles Command cards Junk modelling materials How it will be achieved: Discussion of toys and controls Sharing turns with friends Robot role play activities Robot Bingo game Make a robot with junk modelling Learning and using commands on friends and devices Robot jigsaws Robot snap games Make robot move to numbers on number line Make robot knock over skittles Practice turning on and off Practical Activity 1 Pretend to be a robot. Talk about what robots move and talk like. These will be movements that are a little bit stiff and slightly jerky. Pretending to walk like a robot they will have to follow the instructions of left, right and turn. This fun game can involve children dressing up. Put children into pairs so that each child will have a turn at controlling the pretend robot, who is the other child in the pair. Michael Jackson s Moonwalk dance is amazing to see. Look at cartoons where there are robots and have fun talking like a robot.

Little Robots: Lots of Robot cartoons, activities, colouring etc BBC Make a Pasta Robot at Home Guide BBC Netmum s dressing up ideas and outfits made by mums. Practical Activity 2 Playing a race game. You will need a dice and two remote control cars [or two ordinary cars that are pushed along]. Draw a number line from It should be about 1 metre long: The game involves throwing the dice and moving the cars to match the number on the dice. To make the game more interesting include cards with instructions on which each player must follow when they get a particular number on the dice, for example a number 3. The instructions on the card might say miss a turn, or go back 2 spaces. Talk with your children about they think would be good ideas. Lots of maths games and making activities for young children. Lots of other math games to help early number learning.

Practical Activity 3 Make a toy robot With your children make pretend robots. Suitable junk materials would be cereal and egg boxes, coloured cellophane, yogurt pots. These are all good. I suggest using masking tape to stick the robot parts together because it s easy to use and your child can paint over it. When it s finished ask your child what they are going to call the robot and what it s job is? Take pictures of the child making the robots and print the pictures off. Ask your child to put the pictures in the right order. The pictures can go into Digit Bear s Bronze Robot Award scrapbook or be a wall display. Little Robots: Lots of Robot cartoons, activities, colouring etc BBC Make a Pasta Robot at Home Guide BBC Practical Activity 4 Skittles Play a game of skittles with a remote control car and skittles with numbers one to ten written on. The 10 skittles could be plastic bottles. Put them at least 30cm apart on a flat surface. The idea of the game is that each player has to knock down all the skittles in a set time, for example 3 minutes. At the end of 3 minutes the player counts up how many skittles they have knocked down and that is their score. The skittles have to be knocked down in number order, for example skittle number one is followed by skittle number two. This is great fun and causes lots of excitement. You may need an umpire! Web Postman Pat s delivery Game: Control his van using the arrow keys. Click the blue button with the van on to start the game.

Practical Activity 5 Control toys. Have a look at how control toys work and where the batteries go inside the toy. Talk with your child about safety and what not to do with their control toys. For example, not to put batteries into their mouth. Ask the child questions about the difference between cuddly toys and toys that work with a remote control. Little Robots: Lots of Robot cartoons, activities, colouring etc BBC Postman Pat s delivery Game: Control his van using the arrow keys. Click the blue button with the van on to start the game. Practical Activity 6 A walk to the shops Take a walk to the shops with your children and use a moving staircase. Go through an automatic door. Take photographs of your child using these to talk about later. Ask your child how they think the doors know when to open and shut? Talk about the sensors that instruct the door to open and shut. It is not magic! Print out the photographs of the children using the moving stairs and going through the automatic doors to put into Digit Bear s Bronze Award Robot scrapbook or for a wall display on robots in our lives. Making an alphabet shopping book for your next trip. Spot remote control things and put them in the book.

A online shopping basket that your child can use the online crayons to draw what we will buy at the shops (really good, lots of talking). Gemma has forgotten her shopping list. Can you help her write one using the drag and drop icons? Practical Activity 7 Cut and paste Ask the children to bring into school old catalogues. Ask the children to look through the toy section of the catalogue to find pictures of toys that operate with controls. They will find cars, aeroplanes, ships and different types of robots. Your children can cut out the pictures and glue them onto a larger piece of paper to make a collage display of robotic toys. Net mums: Making different sorts of books with your child. Why not make a robot shaped scrap book to save their control toy pictures in. Practical Activity 8 A Robot Jigsaw Take a photographs of the children using remote control toys. If you have not got a remote control toy use the photograph of your child walking though the automatic doors. Print it out onto light card. Laminate it to strengthen it and then slice the photograph up into four or five pieces. The children can complete the jigsaw. When

your children are confident about doing the five piece robot jigsaw cut it into eight pieces to make it harder or simply make another eight piece jigsaw. Lots of interactive jigsaw links to do online BBC Practical Activity 9 Robot bingo Play a game of Robot Bingo with your children. Make bingo cards of all the main parts of a robot for example, head, leg, hand etc. Then write out the names of the parts and put them into a small box. Each player has a bingo card to play with. Draw out of the box the names of the computer parts. The winner is the person who has all the bingo parts on their card first. This is great fun with the class and encourages memory and observation skills. Play online match the shape domino s Thinking, Talking and Mouse Skills Practical Activity 10 Snap Robot Make a Snap game using the photographs the children have taken in activity 6. Print out two copies of each photograph onto light card. Cut the photographs into the same size rectangles [like playing cards] and now you are ready for a game of Snap. The cards will last longer and look better if laminated. Also round off the corners of the cards so that they are not sharp. To play the game: each player has 5 or 10 cards and in turn they place one card on top of the other. If two cards match they

shout Snap. The player who shouts Snap first is the winner of the cards on the table. The eventual winner is the player who wins all the cards. Animated Matching Game BBC Animals of the Savannah animated photo match game BBC
