1 January 2016 Happy Holidays! Happy Holiday Season! In this edition you will find lots of activities and opportunities in which to participate. Please read closely and take advantage of all the great things 4-H has to offer. The date for Doddridge County 4-H Camp is setting for June 12-17, For copies of the newsletter and upcoming event, stay connected to our website at Livestock Program Info All 4-H member planning to show livestock should have returned their 4-H enrollment forms and by now received the rules and guidelines for the 2016 county fair. A copy of the rules and entry form may be found on our website. 4-H members and FFA members are encouraged to complete their contract fair forms on-line or call the office by January 30. All livestock exhibitors are required to complete quality assurance training. Classes are scheduled for January 22, and February 17. You must attend at least one. Wheeling Nailer s Game Register Now!!! Join us on March 12, 2016 at WesBanco Arena for a fun packed Wheeling Nailer s Hockey game. All Doddridge County students and approved volunteers can take the bus, which will leave at 1:00 p.m. from DCHS. We will be stopping at Cabela s at around 3:00 p.m. for a few hours of shopping before loading back on the bus to grab some fast food and head to the hockey game. We will arrive at WesBanco Arena a little before 7:30 pm. Ticket sales to this game are part of the Tri-State 4-H Challenge. If Doddridge County 4-H can sell more tickets than all other counties participating, we will get to meet Uncle Si Robertson of Duck Dynasty before the game!!! Tickets for all 4-H ers and family are $10.50! Invite a friend. We need to sell the most tickets! Register online at our website. You can pay at our website as well or mail in a check to the office. Tickets will be reserved once money is received. Registration deadline is March 1. Go Nailers! 4-H Volunteers and Leaders Meeting January 20 The Doddridge County Leaders Association meets the 3rd Thursday, January through May, 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. All clubs should send a representative. Volunteers are welcome and needed. Camp planning starts this month. Additional agenda items includes county, state and national events, programming

2 issues and fundraising efforts. Volunteers are needed to assist with our next upcoming fundraiser, the Golf Elimination Dinner, Saturday, March 19, 5:00 p.m. at the County Park. Please contact Craig if you can help. 4-H WVU Scholarships Thanks to the generosity of former 4-H ers, WVU Extension Service has several scholarships available to 4-H youths who are attending WVU. The postmark deadline for most of the applications is March 17. For information regarding the application go to hyd.ext.wvu.edu/4h/scholarships. Teen Leader Weekend/ Charting Weekend TLW is February at WVU Jackson's Mill. This weekend is designed to provide 4-H members personal development experiences to help them better understand themselves, and display more personal confidence when assuming leadership positions and support the Charting process. Participants ages are welcome to attend. The cost is $80 for returning attendees and $69 for first time attendees. Deadline to apply is January 15. Registration forms may be found at Dance Weekend Don t miss Dance Weekend at WVU Jackson s Mill! This is the largest attended camping state event with 4-H ers across the state! The purpose of the weekend is to enhance an individual's awareness and skills in specific dances and to provide a dance learning experience that will challenge interested 4-H'ers at their skill level. This weekend event is open to 4-H'ers who are at least in the 6th grade and/or a 4-H leader and is held at Jackson s Mill, February 26 February 28, The postmark deadline for pre-registration is Friday, January 29, County scholarships are available. Charting Class On Monday, February 29, there will be a mandatory class for all 2016 Charters directly after school at DCHS. Dance Day On February 6, 2016, at the Creative Arts Center in Morgantown there will be a 4-H Dance Day. Dance Day is an opportunity for 4-H ers and their families to come to WVU for a creative arts experience. Participants will be given a tour of the beautiful new Art Museum at WVU followed by admission to the exciting Dance Now Performance at the CAC! If you are interested in art, dance, and music, this is the day for you! The cost is $10 per person and you can register online at Registration Deadline is Friday, January 22, 2016 Other dates to remember 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Training, March 4-6 Multi-Disciplinary State Shooting Sports Camp, April Multi County Livestock Overnighter, May 6-7 (Subject to Change) North Bend Youth Environment Weekend, May 20-22Doddridge County 4-H Camp, June 12 17

3 Photo and Poster Contests---Deadline is February 15! Photos must be taken by a 4-H member who may submit up to three entries, no larger than 8" x 10" and may be snapshot size. Photos should be mounted on cardstock and not in frames. All entries must include the following information on the back side: 4-H photographer's name, age, birthdate, name of 4-H club and an identifying caption for the picture. The poster contest gives 4-H ers an opportunity for artistic expression and to learn something new about a topic. There are five subject categories for the 4-H youth poster, 4-H Promotion, Health, Nutrition and Food Safety, 4-H Environment, Dairy and 4-H Safety. It is not permissible to superimpose any letter, design, or object on the 4-H Club Emblem, or to materially alter its intended shape. All posters must be 22 X 14. (This is one-half of a full sheet of poster board). Looking for a Summer Opportunity? Energy Express AmeriCorps Member.Due by March 1 Energy Express is an award-winning, 8-week, summer reading and nutrition program for children living in West Virginia s rural and low-income communities. The program will take place in 80 sites across WV from June 11 to July 31. AmeriCorps Energy Express mentors make learning fun for small groups of school-age children by creating a safe, enriching environment focused on reading, writing, art and drama. In addition to learning activities, mentors eat nutritious, family-style meals with children, make family visits, and complete a community service project. Two AmeriCorps Opportunities Mentor serves directly with children. College-student mentors make learning fun for small groups of school-age children by creating an enriching environment focused on reading, writing, drama, and art. Mentors also eat breakfast and lunch with the children a valuable time to develop strong bonds. Community Coordinator serves directly with volunteers. Community Coordinators raise awareness and involve parents and the community with children s learning. Community \\coordinators recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to read with children and engage in other activities at the site. AmeriCorps members will receive A living allowance of $1,850 which is subject to all state and federal taxes. Valuable training before and during Energy Express. A Segal AmeriCorps Education Award in the form of a voucher for $1,195 (available October 2015). An opportunity to earn college credit (arrangements made individually). County Committee Reports due to the State Chairs, January 30. County Council January s County Council is Tuesday, January 12, 10 am at the county park. The Agenda includes reviewing the 2016 Plan of Work and a presentation from Greg Cottrill, the new county park manager. The meeting will end with a covered dish luncheon hosted by Big Isaac and Bloomers. Yearbooks and health motivator calendars are available for pick-up at the Extension office. Get Your Garden Calendar Today Begin the 2016 gardening season with a green thumb. Let the Extension folks in your community help you make your garden a success. Pick up your WVU Extension Garden Calendar at the Extension County Office. Planning is key for producing an abundant and successful garden. This year, look at WVU s Garden Calendar articles early to learn what good garden planning entails before you start your garden. 5 CEOS Officer and Committee Training School Are you a new officer? Are you the club committee chair person? Or are you the Health Motivator for your club? Do you need help understanding your role and responsibilities? Then attend CEOS Training School, Wednesday, January 6, 10 am noon, at the Extension Office. This fun interactive class, with lots of take-a-ways and tips, will help you inspire and motivate your club members for the new club year. Lunch will be provided. Don t miss the Annual CEOS Health Fair located at the Doddridge County Park on May 7, 2016 (tentatively). You will be able to take part in a low-cost blood analysis, and much more pertaining to your personal health! Starting in January, the Health Department will not be able to do blood draws ---- not sure how this reads---check KARA paper Knitting Workshops Alex Straight, Ritchie County WVU Extension Agent, will show you how to knit a simple stitch used to make dishcloth. This class will begin at 10 am on Wednesday, January 27, during Stitching Day. All of the supplies will be provided. Call the office, to register. New Stuff for the New Year With the New Year comes tons of exciting new information and stuff. First of all, the Doddridge County Extension Office has a brand new mailing address. That address is: 461 Main Street, West Union, WV Next, everyone at the Extension Office is very excited about our innovative new phone system. The system includes lovely hold music, message options, and the Call Em All message system. The Call Em All message system allows us to send out automated messages to all of our contacts. We are using this system to send out reminders about upcoming events. We hope this method of reminding is quicker and more efficient than mailing postcards. So, if you see that you have missed a call from the Doddridge County Extension Office make sure to check your messages before calling-back as it may be our new message system!
